Mainly applying Michel Foucault’s idea about spacial discipline plus gender studies,in particular,of the correlation between gender and space as well as the power hierarchy in the distribution of space, this paper analyzes the female protagonist Miss Amelia in Carson McCullers’s The Ballad of the Sad Café.This paper argues that Amelia utilizes space as a means of self-empowerment,challenging the conventional gender dichotomy sanctioned by patriarchal norms. However, her spacial transgression is seen as a deconstruction of gender conventionality and causes masculine crisis as embodied by the male characters Marvin Macy and Cousin Lymon. As spacial discipline is collaboratively exerted by Macy and Lymon on Amelia to“correct”her transgression,Amelia finally concedes defeat and submits to patriarchal gender norms. 展开更多

In many of his most memorable ballads, Cowboy Junkies lyricist and lead guitarist Michael Timmins combines imagery of seasonal change, of the year, notably of Winter, with religious and mythological references to create richly textured metaphors and analogies of love, loss and anguish. Some of the band’s songs which display these symbolic networks and thematic linkages which we Will consider here are “Winter’s Song,” “’Cause Cheap is How I Feel,” “Crescent Moon,” “First Recollection,” “Sad to See the Season Go,” “Good Friday” and “Ring on the Sill.” We will show that Timmins succeeds not only in rendering vivid tableaux of life in a world where Winter dominates the seasonal round, but also in making those exterior visions, in effect, objective correlatives of the inner lives of the characters of his ballads. 展开更多

The Ainu are the only ethnic minority officially recognized in Japan.Ainu culture is not only a new entry point for understanding Japanese culture, but also an important medium for exploring ancient Asian civilization. This article analyzes the Ainu folk songs and legends and other oral literature and discovers:The Ainu people respect and thank the gods, and accept the gifts and punishments of the gods. However, the Ainu claim that human beings have autonomy through the belief that humans have the right to punish gods, and those humans and gods can strive for an equal two-way relationship. In addition, the Ainu emphasize the importance of coexistence between humans and other creatures in nature. It is believed that hunting and fishing are not blasphemy, but acceptances of the gifts from the gods. However,it is advocated that human beings and other creatures should give each other living space and maintain the balance of symbiosis and coexistence. The Ainu belief in relative equality with gods and coexistence with nature reflects the concept of“shared destiny”in ancient Asian civilizations. It provides an important reference for the development of modern human society. 展开更多

To get out of grand discourse of mainstream ideology, skillful writers have to do their best to find out an effective narrative tactic. In Ballad of Eternal Sorrow, which is a typical text of turning inside, WANG An-yi takes a tactic of rejection, taking grand historical discourse of the mainstream ideology as the background of the novel so as to draw a panorama of the everyday life of common Shanghai women. Against American Orientalism, The Woman Warrior has taken a representation/deconstruction narrative tactic to transform the heroic tradition of Chinese women (Brave Orchid, Fa Mu Lan and Ts'ai Yen) into American literary canon to empower the women's liberation movement in America. 展开更多

In a time of the global market economy, if one wants to live harmoniously together with nature or living environment, he should not think with a theoretical mode of dualist contradiction but that of harmony and coexistence such as "wholeness of man and nature". To illustrate this point, this paper thinks The Woman Warrior and Ballad of Eternal Sorrow are two significant texts: Ballad of Eternal Sorrow tells an ordinary, self-respecting, and life-respecting story of WANG Qi-yao and the girls like her as well as the city Shanghai. They blend into one harmonious whole: The city is like the girls and the girls match the city. Likewise, The Woman Warrior highlights the significance of naturc on the girl narrator's epiphany and healthy growth. The narrator comes to understand that paradoxes are the basic existent condition of human beings and so what she needs to do is to be magnanimous and balanceable in accepting these paradoxes. 展开更多
