Fine particulate matter(PM2.5)and ozone(O3)have emerged as major air pollutants in China,posing risks to human health.In this paper,Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei,a key region for air pollution prevention and control in China,was selected as the study area to analyze the characteristics of PM2.5and O3 concentration changes and their health effects from 2014 to 2023,and to estimate the potential health benefits of realizing different emission reduction standards in 2030.The results have shown that:1)The annual average PM2.5concentration in Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei showed a decreasing trend from 2014 to 2023,while the daily maximum 8-h sliding average of O3(O3-8h concentration)showed a fluctuating increasing trend.2)The number of premature deaths and economic losses attributed to PM2.5pollution showed a decreasing trend,while the changes in the number of premature deaths and economic losses attributed to O3 pollution showed an opposite trend,in which the health risks and economic losses in Beijing and Tianjin were relatively prominent.3)If the annual average concentrations of PM2.5and O3 in 2030 reach the limits of the secondary standards of Ambient Air Quality Standards(GB 3095–2012),the number of premature deaths attributed to PM2.5and O3 in Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei will decrease by 23.08%and20.45%,respectively,compared with that in 2023,and with the increase of per capita disposable income year by year,the health and economic losses will be reduced by 41.23×108 yuan(RMB)(95%CI:33.71×108–48.72×108 yuan)and 98.89×108 yuan(95%CI:54.14×108–142.67×108yuan),respectively;the increase in the number of premature deaths can be further avoided and significant economic benefits can be realized if the concentrations of PM2.5and O3 are further reduced to higher standards.The study shows that the PM2.5control in Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei has been effective,but the O3 pollution problem is emphasized,and the number of health deaths and economic losses caused by it are on the rise,and higher target air quality standards should be set in order to effectively improve the health of residents and bring significant economic benefits. 展开更多

Understanding the complex interactions between human activities and ecosystem functions is a prerequisite for achieving sustainable development.Since the implementation of the“Grain for Green”Project in 1999,ecosystem functions in China’s Loess Plateau have significantly improved.However,intensified human activities have also exacerbated the pressures on the region’s fragile ecological environment.This study investigates the spatiotemporal variations in the human activity intensity index(HAI)and net ecosystem benefits(NEB)from 2000 to 2020,using expert-based assessments and an enhanced cost-benefit evaluation framework.Results indicate that HAI increased by 16.7% and 16.6% at the grid and county levels,respectively.NEB exhibited pronounced spatial heterogeneity,with a total increase of USD 36.2 trillion at the grid scale.At the county level,the average NEB rose by 75%.The degree of trade-off was higher at the grid scale than at the county scale,while the synergistic areas initially expanded and then declined at both scales.Key areas for improvement and regions of lagging development were identified as priority zones for ecological management and spatial planning at both spatial resolutions.This study offers scientific insights and practical guidance for harmonizing ecological conservation with high-quality development in ecologically vulnerable regions. 展开更多

Enhancing industrial land use benefit is important for optimizing spatial arrangements of industrial land and promoting sustainable development.Existing studies mainly focus on element input scale,while the role of element flows remains insufficiently explored,especially at the parcel level.This study examines industrial parcels in the Shanghai-Nanjing Corridor in the Yangtze River Delta,China,by constructing a parcel-company matched dataset for listed manufacturing parent companies.The main findings are as follows:1)element scales(capital,labor,and technology)are positively associated with industrial land use benefit,with stronger relevance among low-benefit companies.2)Capital flow shows the strongest and most consistent flow effects,with capital flow intensity(0.2069,P0.10)but turns positive in the middle and upper tails(q=0.20,0.50,0.95),while total labor force(0.1964,P<0.01)and labor composition(0.2483,P<0.01)remain robust correlates.4)Technology flow(−0.1525,P<0.10)is negative and persists across several quantiles,whereas Research and Development(R&D)intensity matters only at the upper tail(q=0.95);total technology(0.1809,P<0.05)is positive overall and more salient for high-benefit outcomes.This study contributes by providing parcellevel evidence on element flows via a parcel-company matched dataset and by uncovering quantile-specific‘scale-flow transition’patterns that would be obscured by mean-based analyses.The findings imply that industrial land policies should move beyond scale-only approaches by strengthening corridor-wide element-flow networks,coordinating land supply with logistics and amenity infrastructure,and adopting stage-specific company-land strategies to improve industrial land use benefit. 展开更多

Taurine,a multifunctional sulfur-containing amino acid and conditionally essential nutrient for humans,plays a key role in various biological processes and has attracted significant attention for its therapeutic potential.Originally isolated from ox bile,taurine has broad applications,but a comprehensive understanding of its pharmacological properties,health benefits,and safety profile remains incomplete.In this review,we critically evaluate the existing evidence on taurine's effects based on an extensive literature search of multiple databases,including PubMed,Web of Science,Scopus,ScienceDirect,Google Scholar,CNKI,and Baidu Scholar,up to May 2024.Taurine demonstrates a range of beneficial effects,including antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities,modulation of lipid metabolism,neuroprotection,and cardiovascular protection.It has shown substantial impacts on anti-tumor activity,immune system modulation,blood pressure and lipid regulation,glycemic control,hepatobiliary protection,and potential anti-aging effects.However,the precise regulatory pathways underlying these benefits are not yet fully understood.Epidemiological studies indicate a correlation between high taurine dosage and a reduced risk of diseases.However,direct evidence from interventional studies remains insufficient,and existing clinical trials require further in-depth investigation.Concerns about improper use and potential health risks also highlight the need for thorough safety assessments.To address these gaps,we recommend conducting well-designed,long-term randomized controlled trials to establish effective doses for disease prevention and assess taurine's potential as a primary or adjunct therapy.This review aims to guide future research and support public health efforts,ultimately improving health outcomes. 展开更多

Cooperation among multiple stakeholders in the complementary integration of renewable energy sources(hydro,wind,and solar power)can enhance the incremental benefits of each participant as well as the overall efficiency of the cooperative alliance.The interest coordination mechanism stands as a pivotal element in the development of such multi-energy complementary systems.This study adopts a three-tier hierarchical model comprising a primary layer,secondary layer,and tertiary layer.The primary layer is an efficiency-oriented cooperative game model based on collective rationality,which determines the installed capacities of hydro,wind,and solar power within the alliance by requiring that the incremental financial internal rate of return(FIRR)exceed the benchmark FIRR for joining the hydro-wind-solar integrated alliance.The secondary layer is a participation-oriented non-cooperative game model rooted in individual rationality.Building on the installed capacities defined by the primary layer,it calculates the FIRR for each energy type when developed independently and compares it with the incremental FIRR of alliance participation to assess the willingness of stakeholders to join the alliance.The tertiary layer is an equity-oriented bargaining game model.Leveraging the incremental FIRR from the primary layer and the individually rational FIRR from the secondary layer,it ascertains the equitable FIRR for each stakeholder through bargaining based on the principle of fairness.A case study of a specific renewable energy multi-energy complementary system validates the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed mechanism. 展开更多

Winter wheat is a key staple crop in Northwest China,yet optimizing its productivity and economic returns remains a challenge due to water constraints and suboptimal planting densities.This study evaluates the combined effects of irrigation strategies and planting density(PD) on winter wheat yield,resource-use efficiency,and net economic benefits(NEB).A two-year field experiment was conducted under four irrigation treatments(I1,no irrigation;I2,before winter and jointing;I3,jointing;I4,jointing and anthesis) and three PD treatments(PD1,562.5×104 plants ha-1;PD2,375×104 plants ha-1;PD3,187.5×104 plants ha-1).Through field trials,we identified optimal water-saving irrigation regimes and planting densities that maximize grain yield while enhancing water productivity.Our results demonstrated that lower PD(187.5×104 plants ha-1) under reduced irrigation significantly improved dry matter accumulation(DMA),SPAD,and leaf area index(LAI),leading to higher grain yield.Moderate irrigation at the jointing stage(I3) enhanced grain yield in higher planting densities by up to 18.42% compared to other irrigation regimes,while the highest overall yield(6,310 kg ha-1) was achieved in medium PD under the I3 irrigation.Water-use efficiency(WUE) was significantly improved by reducing irrigation at specific growth stages,mitigating excessive evapotranspiration.PD3-I3 achieved the highest NEB,exceeding I1,I2,and I4 by11.9,18.4,and 16.4%,respectively,in 2022-2023 and by 15.1,14.0,and 8.4%,respectively,in 2023-2024.The findings provide practical insights for sustainable wheat production,ensuring higher profitability while conserving water resources.Implementing optimized irrigation and PD strategies offers a strategic pathway to improving food security and farm income in the semi-arid regions of Northwest China. 展开更多

To identify the optimal maize-soybean relay strip intercropping pattern for the northern margin of the Jianghan Plain,a field experiment was conducted in 2025 at the experimental base of Huangji Town,Xiangzhou District,Xiangyang City,Hubei Province.Maize variety Zhengdan 958 and soybean variety Zhongdou 46 were used as test materials.Seven relay strip intercropping patterns with different bandwidths and row ratios were designed,with sole maize as the control(CK),and the effects of different configurations on crop growth period,agronomic traits,yield,and economic benefits were systematically analyzed.The results showed that different bandwidth configurations had no significant effect on the maize growth period,but significantly influenced the system equivalent yield and comprehensive economic benefits.Sole maize(treatment 1,CK)gave the highest equivalent yield of 7725 kg/hm 2.Among the relay strip intercropping patterns,treatment 7(M-S7,bandwidth of 2.8 m,maize-to-soybean row ratio of 2:4,maize density 35700 plants/hm 2,soybean density 285720 plants/hm 2)showed the best overall performance,achieving an equivalent yield of 7200 kg/hm 2 and a total system economic benefit of 20661 yuan/hm 2,with the economic benefit being significantly higher than that of sole maize and the other relay strip intercropping treatments.In conclusion,the treatment 7(M-S7)pattern balances stable maize yield with increased soybean yield,demonstrates outstanding comprehensive production benefits,and is suitable for extension and application in Xiangyang City and similar ecological zones of the Jianghan Plain. 展开更多

Urban green spaces have positive effects on both physical and mental wellbeing.However,few studies have focused on the trends and thresholds of the effects of different influences on restorative benefits when viewing scenes differfeaturing plant communities.We measured subjective evaluations and objective physiological data from 44 participants who viewed images of plant communities in the yellow to green hue range to compare differences in restorative benefits among plant communities at different visual distances,as well as quantifying the influencing factors involved.The following results were found:(1)Coniferous and multi-layered plant communities were found to provide greater restorative benefits,and the restorative benefits grew with increasing visual distance.(2)Shape and color characteristics were significantly correlated with restorative benefits,but the relationship is not simply linear.(3)The restorative benefits were found to be greatest when crown proportion was 61.23%,trunk proportion ranged from 4.11%to 13.70%,and the value of color index value ranged from 25.44%to 35.56%;the restorative benefits gradually increased when sky proportion exceeded 12.95%-13.19%,the fractal dimension exceeded 1.62-1.67,and hue index exceeded 91.64°-95.67°;additionally,the restorative benefits decreased when the saturation index increased.This study provides a scientific basis for the construction and improvement of plant landscapes in urban green spaces. 展开更多

The study aims to explore and utilize more native plants.A comprehensive evaluation method for the social benefits was formulated in this paper based on the Analytic Hierarchy Process(AHP).We used this method to synthetically evaluate the social benefits of native plants Carex breviculmis in Beijing.The results showed that different weights were assigned to each index,which was set to align with the descending order of environmental beautification(0.482)>leisure and recreation(0.239)>recuperation and healthcare(0.192)>science education(0.087).Science education had the lowest weights and evaluation scores in both indicator weights and questionnaire surveys.Based on the fuzzy comprehensive evaluation results and the principle of maximum membership degree,the comprehensive score for the social benefits of native plants(Carex breviculmis)lawn was determined to be 3.94,rounded to 4,which indicates a"quite satisfied"level.The selected indicators in this evaluation system accurately reflect the social benefits of native plants.The evaluation results meet the public's ecological and greening needs for the native plants.The evaluation system consisted of both qualitative and quantitative comparisons.It could also serve as a reference for the development and utilization of native plants that contribute to a better understanding of the value and role of native ground cover plants as well as promoting high-quality and sustainable development of landscape greening in northern cities. 展开更多

Against the backdrop of advancing digital strategies and the rise of national trend consumption,traditional craftsmanship faces new opportunities for modern transformation.Yongchun bamboo weaving,as an important cultural heritage,has been constrained by practical challenges such as fragmented production scales,insufficient product innovation,and narrow market channels.Driven by the dual forces of cultural digitization and IP empowerment,this paper primarily explores how Yongchun bamboo weaving can achieve a leap in commercial value and analyzes the economic benefits it brings.This study mainly employs literature analysis and case study methods to dissect the current state and core bottlenecks of the Yongchun bamboo weaving industry,further elucidating how cultural digitization and IP design can collaboratively facilitate the creative transformation of cultural resources and drive the economic performance of bamboo weaving-related products.Based on this,the study devises a phased commercialization implementation pathway and conducts simulated analysis and evaluation of its potential direct and indirect economic benefits.The conclusions of this study not only provide a specific roadmap for the sustainable development of Yongchun bamboo weaving but also offer valuable insights for the commercial development of similar cultural projects and the innovation of craftsmanship economic models in the digital age. 展开更多

Plant factories(PFs),also known as vertical farms,are advanced agricultural production systems that operate independently of geographical and environmental conditions.They utilize artificial light and controlled environments to produce horticultural plants year-round.This approach offers a promising solution for the stable and efficient supply of high-quality horticultural produce in urban areas,enhancing resilient urban food systems.This review explores the economic and environmental impacts and potential of PFs.Breakthroughs in PF research and development are highlighted,including increased product yields and quality,reduced energy input and CO2emissions through optimized growing conditions and automation systems,transitioning to clean energy,improved resource use efficiency,and reduced food transport distances.Moreover,innovations and applications of PFs have been proposed to address challenges from both economic and environmental perspectives.The proposed development of PF technologies for economic and environmental benefits represents a comprehensive and promising approach to urban horticulture,significantly enhancing the impact and benefits of fundamental research and industrial applications. 展开更多

The horizontal ecological compensation plays an important role in balancing the interests of all parties and coordinating regional development in the basin.However,the mechanism of ecological compensation based on embodied carbon emissions is still poorly understood.Here,taking the Yellow River Basin as the research area,we use the multi-regional input-output(MRIO)model to measure the embodied carbon transfers between its seven urban agglomerations in 2012 and 2017 from the viewpoint of value-added trade benefits.Further,for the first time,the green trade benefits and ecological compensation amounts are analyzed.The results indicate that:(1)The transfer of trade-embodied carbon among the urban agglomerations in the basin showed obvious spatial heterogeneity and geographic proximity effects,and trade-embodied carbon outflows(inflows)had a pattern of"highest in the midstream,second in the downstream,and lowest in the upstream".(2)The industry composition of the urban agglomerations in relation to embodied carbon outflows(inflows)was similar,mainly in the service and heavy manufacturing industries.(3)The spatial pattern of green trade benefits in the basin had shifted from"high in the north and low in the surrounding area"to"high in the east-central part and low in the west".(4)The pattern of ecological compensation in the basin had shifted from the upstream surplus,the middle and downstream deficit to the midstream deficit,and the upstream and downstream surplus.Therefore,we recommend improving energy structures in high-demand urban agglomerations by adopting clean energy,focusing on decarbonization and energy efficiency in resource-rich regions.Additionally,promoting low-carbon economies,especially in the service and heavy manufacturing industries,implementing differentiated emission reduction strategies,and optimizing carbon compensation mechanisms considering regional disparities and resource endowments are crucial.It is expected that the study can enrich the scientific basis of horizontal ecological compensation and increase the fairness of regional carbon emission rights allocation. 展开更多

Dear Editor,Lassa virus(LASV)is the causative agent of the acute viral hemorrhagic Lassa fever(LF),which is classified into Mammarenavirus within the Arenaviridae family,with a single-stranded,negative-sense,bisegmented RNA genome.Due to its high pathogenicity and lethality,LASV is considered as a priority threat to public health,with an estimated cases of 300,000 infections and 5000 deaths annually.LASV was first isolated and described as a clinical entity in 1969 in Lassa,Nigeria(Garry,2023).LASV isolates of different geographic and host origins are highly diverse in genomic sequences and phylogenetically classified into up to seven lineages,with each lineage predominately localized in specific countries.Although the research on LF has been carried out for decades since the pathogen first characterized,there is no approved antiviral drugs or vaccines for clinical use against LASV to date(Grant et al.,2023).One possible reason that hindered the development of countermeasures is that the preclinical studies on authentic LASV are restricted in high bio-containment biosafety level 4(BSL-4)facilities.In this letter,we describe isolation,and characterization of the LASV from the clinical samples.And we applied a coadministration assay of antiviral drugs for LASV by using a clinically isolated Mammarenavirus lassaense strain in the BSL-4 facility,aiming to investigate new therapeutic strategies for LASV infection. 展开更多

The Shan-Shui Initiative was a symbolic project to implement the new development concept and promote the modernization of harmonious coexistence between humans and nature.This study established a multi-scale assessment framework(site-unit-region)to quantify its ecological impacts in the Three Gorges Reservoir core area in Chongqing(2021−2023).Leveraging remote sensing,the InVEST model,and the RUSLE model,we revealed:(1)Contrasting land-use changes with control areas from 2021 to 2023,the project zones showed 3.28%urban expansion alongside 1.85%grassland and 0.05%wetland gained,yet sustained forest loss(−3.24 km2).(2)Synergistic effects in restoration units enhanced Yangtze River water quality protection.(3)Divergent ecosystem service showed different trends:soil retention increased(6.01×108 t C),while carbon storage decreased(2.27×106 t C)and water retention declined(−2.28×109 m3).Non-point pollution control exhibited nutrient-specific responses with P reduction(−6.54×103 kg)versus N increase(+2.42×103 kg).The study provided a quantitative analysis method for the ecological benefit assessment of the project by the framework and case application analysis.It also provided a scientific path for carrying out adaptive management of the project. 展开更多

Benefit evaluation of debris flow prevention and control projects was one of the essential contents of debris flow prevention and mitigation work.In order to scientifically and quantitatively evaluate the comprehensive benefit of debris flow prevention and control projects,this study identified nine factors as evaluation indicators from economic,social,and ecological aspects.The projection pursuit(PP) model based on the improved particle swarm optimization(IPSO) algorithm was used to construct a mathematical model to evaluate the benefit of debris flow prevention and control projects.The interpolation method was applied to divide the benefit grades.The debris flow prevention and control projects in Qipan,Taoguan,Chutou,Anjia,and Mozi gullies in Wenchuan County were chosen as typical cases for empirical analysis.The case study revealed that,among the criteria layer indicators,investment per unit of the protected area,investment per unit of the protected population,the amount of water and soil conservation,and reduction rate of accumulation fan had the most significant weights.The social and ecological benefits were found to be the more important in the target layer.The comprehensive benefit of Qipan,Taoguan,Chutou,Anjia,and Mozi gullies was found to be 4.44,4.83,1.95,3,and 2,respectively.The benefit ranking of the five gullies was consistent with their effectiveness in disaster prevention ranking in the flood season of 2019.Therefore,it could prove that the newly-built benefit evaluation model was practical and feasible,and the evaluation results of the sample could be reasonably interpreted,which verified the effectiveness of the methods. 展开更多

Public participation is crucial in mitigating disasters.Stemming from the ongoing debate on benefit-and risk-driven approaches to landslide mitigation,this study seeks to uncover the factors and underlying mechanisms that affect farmers'willingness to participate in landslide prevention and mitigation(WPLPM).Conducted in Heifangtai,Gansu Province,China,renowned as the"landslide natural laboratory",this research employs multiple linear regression analysis on data from 399 questionnaires to pinpoint the key determinants of farmers'WPLPM.The findings reveal:(1)the"risk perception paradox"exists—farmers have high-risk perception but low WPLPM;(2)the impact of risk perception on WPLPM is tempered by self-efficacy related to fund,learning ability,and operation ability,offering an insight into the"risk perception paradox";and(3)There are significant positive influences of farmers'benefit perception,social network,and perceived responsibility on their WPLPM.Based on these insights,the study offers targeted policy recommendations. 展开更多
