In integrated circuit(IC)manufacturing,fast,nondestructive,and precise detection of defects in patterned wafers,realized by bright-field microscopy,is one of the critical factors for ensuring the final performance and yields of chips.With the critical dimensions of IC nanostructures continuing to shrink,directly imaging or classifying deep-subwavelength defects by bright-field microscopy is challenging due to the well-known diffraction barrier,the weak scattering effect,and the faint correlation between the scattering cross-section and the defect morphology.Herein,we propose an optical far-field inspection method based on the form-birefringence scattering imaging of the defective nanostructure,which can identify and classify various defects without requiring optical super-resolution.The technique is built upon the principle of breaking the optical form birefringence of the original periodic nanostructures by the defect perturbation under the anisotropic illumination modes,such as the orthogonally polarized plane waves,then combined with the high-order difference of far-field images.We validated the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed method in detecting deep subwavelength defects through rigid vector imaging modeling and optical detection experiments of various defective nanostructures based on polarization microscopy.On this basis,an intelligent classification algorithm for typical patterned defects based on a dual-channel AlexNet neural network has been proposed,stabilizing the classification accuracy ofλ/16-sized defects with highly similar features at more than 90%.The strong classification capability of the two-channel network on typical patterned defects can be attributed to the high-order difference image and its transverse gradient being used as the network’s input,which highlights the polarization modulation difference between different patterned defects more significantly than conventional bright-field microscopy results.This work will provide a new but easy-to-operate method for detecting and classifying deep-subwavelength defects in patterned wafers or photomasks,which thus endows current online inspection equipment with more missions in advanced IC manufacturing. 展开更多

Birefringence and second harmonic generation(SHG)are important optical properties of functional crystals.However,it is relatively rare for a compound to exhibit both enhanced properties simultaneously.In this study,we used DFT calculations to discover an ideal functional gene:protonated 3,5-dipicolinic acid(C7H4NO4,HDPA).By combining HPDA with the traditional IO3-anion,we obtained a non-centrosymmetric and polar semiorganic iodate,namely HDPA(IO3).The organic cations and iodate anions in HDPA(IO3)are bridged via the N-H···O and O-H···O hydrogen bonds,forming the wave-shaped layers.The synergistic effect between the expandedπ-conjugation of the organic cation and the stereochemically active lone pair electrons in the inorganic iodate anion results that HDPA(IO3)exhibiting a strong SHG effect,3.6 times that of KH2PO4,and an unusually large birefringence of 0.35 at 546 nm,larger than most of SHG-active iodates.Additionally,HDPA(IO3)has a wide bandgap of 4.12 e V with a corresponding cutoff edge at 269 nm,indicating its potential as a promising short-wave ultraviolet(UV)optical crystal. 展开更多

We demonstrate a new polarization smoothing(PS)approach utilizing residual stress birefringence in fused silica to create a spatially random polarization control plate(SRPCP),thereby improving target illumination uniformity in inertial confinement fusion(ICF)laser systems.The fundamental operating mechanism and key fabrication techniques for the SRPCP are systematically developed and experimentally validated.The SRPCP converts a linearly polarized 3ω incident laser beam into an output beam with a spatially randomized polarization distribution.When combined with a continuous phase plate,the SRPCP effectively suppresses high-intensity speckles at all spatial frequencies in the focal spot.The proposed PS technique is specifically designed for high-fluence large-aperture laser systems,enabling novel polarization control regimes in laser-driven ICF. 展开更多

Birefringent materials play a crucial role in light polarization, with important applications in fiber-optic com-munications. However, developing such materials for the solar-blind region and shorter wavelengths remains challenging due to the inherent trade-off between birefringence and bandgap. In this work, we introduce a strategic assembly of cyanuric rings with biuret units-the latter identified for the first time as a birefringence-active motif-resulting in two neW compounds: [H5C2N3O2][H3C3N3O3] (1) and [H5C2N3O2][H3C3N3O3]·xH2O (x ≈ 0.43) (2). Through hydrogen bonding-driven structural optimization, compound 2 achieves a 50% increase in birefringence (Δn = 0.403 @ 546 nm) compared to 1, while retaining a short cutoff edge of 208 nm. This advancement demonstrates that hydrogen-bond-guided structural design, combined with novel functional units, can overcome the traditional birefringence-bandgap conflict, opening new possibilities for short-wavelength birefringent materials with strong optical anisotropy. 展开更多

Enhancement of the nonlinear optical(NLO)output power of lasers requires urgent development of an NLO crystal with a significant second-harmonic generation(SHG)response and sufficient birefringence for phase-matching capability;however,simultaneously optimizing these two key parameters remains a great challenge.In contrast to traditional single-anion units,the stereochemically-active lone pair Sb3+ion is coordinated by S2-and I- ions to yield the mixed-anionic Sb SI chalcohalide that can enhance hyperpolarizability and anisotropic polarizability concurrently.As anticipated,Sb SI exhibited the largest SHG response(5.7×Ag Ga S2@1.91μm)among phase-matching Sb-based sulfides,the favorable laser-induced damage threshold(LIDT,2.3×Ag Ga S2@2.09μm),and the giant calculated birefringence(0.62@1.91μm).Structural analysis and computational simulations indicate that the highly polarizable mixed anion determine the enormous SHG response and birefringence. 展开更多

Birefringent materials possess significant optical anisotropy,making them pivotal in modulating light polarization,particularly in laser technology and scientific applications.In this study,five variants of antimony potassium fluoronitrates named SbF3·KNO3(1),SbF3·3KNO3(2),SbF3·3KSbF4·KNO3(3),KSb2F7·3KNO3(4),and KSb2F7·2KNO3(5)were obtained.Remarkably,each compound contains distinct Sb-polyhedra configurations.Compounds 1 and 2 consist of singular[SbF3]units,compound 3 harbors a mixture of[SbF3]and[SbF4]units,while compounds 4 and 5 feature single[SbF4]units.Interestingly,the birefringence escalates progressively from 1 to 5,and notably,compound 5 exhibits the most pronounced birefringence among all reported inorganic antimony oxysalts.Detailed structural and property analyses affirm that the structural variance among the five compounds underpins the observed differences in birefringence.Moreover,the synergistic interplay between planarπ-conjugated NO3groups and Sb3+ions with lone-pair electrons facilitates the emergence of substantial polarization anisotropy. 展开更多

Birefringent crystals play an irreplaceable role in optical systems by adjusting the polarization state of light in optical devices.This work successfully synthesized a new thiophosphate phase ofβ-Pb3P2S8through the high-temperature solid-state spontaneous crystallization method.Different from the cubicα-Pb3P2S8,theβ-Pb3P2S8crystallizes in the orthorhombic Pbcn space group.Notably,β-Pb3P2S8shows a large band gap of 2.37 e V in lead-based chalcogenides,wide infrared transparent window(2.5-15μm),and excellent thermal stability.Importantly,the experimental birefringence shows the largest value of0.26@550 nm in chalcogenides,even larger than the commercialized oxide materials.The Barder charge analysis result indicates that the exceptional birefringence effect is mainly from the Pb2+and S2-in the[Pb S_n]polyhedrons.Meanwhile,the parallelly arranged polyhedral layers could improve the structural anisotropic.Therefore,this work supports a new method for designing chalcogenides with exceptional birefringence effect in the infrared region. 展开更多

Stress distribution and stress-induced birefringence distribution of three kinds of optical fibers with different cross structures are presented and compared, and the influence on the stress- induced birefringence by temperature change are analyzed as well. The results show that the fibers with three-stress regions have a lower linear birefringence, which is very important for the fabrication of the circular polaxization-maintalning fiber with high performance drawn from the same fiber preform by using the spinning method. 展开更多

Herein,two antimony sulfates,named RbSb(SO4)2(1)and CsSb(SO4)2(2),have been successfully synthesized with the introduction of Sb3+cation with stereochemically active lone pairs(SCALP)into sulfates by the conventional hydrothermal method.Both two compounds endow short ultraviolet(UV)absorption edges(281 nm and 278 nm,respectively)and large birefringence(0.171@546 nm and 0.174@546 nm,respectively),which means that they are promising short-wave UV optical materials.Interestingly,though both of the two compounds exhibit similar 1D chained structures,and possess the same functional moieties including SbO4 seesaws and SO4 tetrahedral groups,they exhibit significantly opposite macroscopic symmetries,i.e.,compound 1 crystallizes in a centrosymmetric(CS)manner(P21)and compound 2 in a noncentrosymmetric(NCS)manner(P212121),due to the size of cations[r(Rb+)=1.56 A˚,r(Cs+)=1.67 A˚]affects the orientation of SCALP of the adjacent Sb3+. 展开更多

Nonlinear optical(NLO)materials play an increasingly important role in laser technology.Birefringence is one of the most important parameters for NLO materials to realize angle phase-matching conditions.In comparison with other desirable optical properties,the availability of birefringence and refractive index dispersion is especially problematic owing to the strict requirements for single crystals.In this review,we described how to obtain the refractive index and birefringence of NLO materials from crystals sub-millimeters to centimeters in size.Espe-cially,recently developed methods including the minimum deflection angle method,auto-collimation method,prism coupling method,oil immersion technique,interference color method,and theoretical calculation(DFT)for rapid assessment of birefringence are summarized,the contents of which are mainly focused on the principles and typical applications,together with the advantages and drawbacks.In addition,representative examples of bire-fringent measurements were presented.The purpose of this work is to provide a useful perspective on the characterization of birefringence for NLO materials.It is hoped that this review can give a clear description of the birefringence measurements and accelerate the discovery of new NLO crystals. 展开更多

The development of optical films with high transparency,high thermal resistance and low birefringence remains a challenge in the flexible display industry.In this work,we designed and synthesized a series of fluorinated colorless polyimides(CPIs)materials using 2,5-substituted m-phenylenediamine diamine monomers and 1,2,4,5-cyclohexanetetracarboxylic dianhydride(CHDA).We systematically studied the effects of fluorinated group substitutions on the thermal,mechanical,optical and dielectric properties of CPI films.The introduction of alicyclic CHDA dianhydride affords high transparency and low yellowness,while the 2,5-substituted m-phenylenediamine diamines offer the CPIs with quite low birefringence as well as high glass transition temperatures.A particular CHDA/o3FBDA film with simple chemical structure stands out,exhibiting well-balanced overall properties. 展开更多

A new type of V-shaped photonic crystal fiber with elliptical air-holes is proposed to realize simultaneous high bire- fringence and nonlinearity at a wavelength of 1.55 μm. The full vector finite element method was adopted to investigate its characteristics, including birefringence, nonlinearity, and dispersion. The PCF exhibited a very high birefringence of 2.89x10-2 and very high nonlinear coefficient of 102.69 W-1 .km 1. In particular, there were two zero-dispersion wave- lengths (ZDWs) in the visible (X: 640-720 nm and Y: 730-760 nm) and near-infrared regions (X: 1050-1606 nm and Y: 850-1500 nm). The combination of high birefringence and nonlinearity allowed the PCF to maintain the polarization state and generate a broadband super continuum, with potential applications in nonlinear optics. 展开更多

The dualcore photonic crystal fiber (PCF) consists of two asymmetric cores. The high polarization property and the coupling characteristics have been studied by using the finite dement method and mode coupling theory. Numerical results show that the birefringence at wavelength λ = 10 μm is up to 0.01386 and the coupling length can reach wavelength = 5 μm, 261 μm and 271.44 μm for x-polarized mode and y-polarized mode, respectively. It demonstrates that a 6.786-ram-long fiber can exhibit an extinction ratio of better than -10 dB and a bandwidth of 180 nm. 展开更多

The mode splitting induced by electro-optic birefringence in a P-I-N InGaAs/GaAs/A1GaAs vertical-cavity surface- emitting laser (VCSEL) has been studied by polarized electroluminescence (EL) at room temperature. The polarized EL spectra with E||[110] and E || [150] directions, are extracted for different injected currents. The mode splitting of the two orthogonal polarized modes for a VCSEL device is determined, and its value increases linearly with the increasing injected current due to electro-optic birefringence; This article demonstrates that the polarized EL is a powerful tool to study the mode splitting and polarization anisotropy of a VCSEL device. 展开更多

In this paper,the temperature dependence of birefringence in polarization maintaining photonic crystal fibres(PMPCFs) is investigated theoretically and experimentally.Utilizing the structural parameters of the PM-PCF samples in the experiment,two effects leading to the birefringence variation under different temperatures are analysed,which are the thermal expansion of silica material and the refractive index variation due to the temperature variation.The actual birefringence variation of the PM-PCF is the combination of the two effects,which is in the order of 10-9 K-1 for both fibre samples.Calculation results also show that the influence of refractive index variation is the dominant contribution,which determines the tendency of the fibre birefringence variation with varying temperature.Then,the birefringence beat lengths of the two fibre samples are measured under the temperature,which varies from -40℃ to 80℃.A traditional PANDA-type polarization maintaining fibre(PMF) is also measured in the same way for comparison.The experimental results indicate that the birefringence variation of the PM-PCF due to temperature variation is far smaller than that of the traditional PMF,which agrees with the theoretical analysis.The ultra-low temperature dependence of the birefringence in the PM-PCF has great potential applications in temperature-insensitive fibre interferometers,fibre sensors,and fibre gyroscopes. 展开更多

External-cavity birefringence feedback effects of the microchip Nd:YAG laser are presented. When a birefringence element is placed in the external feedback cavity of the laser, two orthogonally polarized laser beams with a phase difference are output. The phase difference is twice as large as the phase retardation in the external cavity along the two orthogonal directions. The variable extra-cavity birefringence, caused by rotation of the external-cavity birefringenee element, results in tunable phase difference between the two orthogonally polarized beams. This means that the roll angle information has been translated to phase difference of two output laser beams. A theoretical analysis based on the Fabry-Perot cavity equivalent model and refractive index ellipsoid is presented, which is in good agreement with the experimental results. This phenomenon has potential applications for roll angle measurement. 展开更多

Filter characteristics of a designed gold-filled high birefringence photonic crystal fiber are investigated based on the finite element method. The wavelength filter resonances in the high birefringence photonic crystal fiber occur at different points for different polarized directions, and the resonance strength in the x-polarized case is much weaker than that in the y-polarized case. The much more obvious splitting filter characteristics and different resonance strength imply the study and application values in splitting and single polarization fiber devices. The simulation results show that increasing the number of the gold wires only enhances the resonance strength when there is no surface plasmon supermode formed. With the diameters of the gold wires increasing, the response wavelength moves to a longer wavelength, and the strength becomes stronger. When the diameter is increased to 1.4 μm, the response wavelength in the x-polarized case can be tuned to 1.318 gin, which is the communication wavelength. The strongest resonance occurs at 1.2375 μm in the y-polarized case, and the peaking loss can reach 435.83 dB/cm. 展开更多

The characteristics of birefringence, dispersion and leakage loss are studied by the multipole method. Numerical results show that the improved PCF possesses the properties of a flat dispersion and single mode operation. Moreover, with the operating wavelength λ = 1.55/zm, the modal birefringence increases greatly in comparison with that of the original PCF, and the leakage loss is about 104 times smaller than that of the original PCF because the modification gives rise to the strong confinement of guided modes. It is expected that the improved PCF can be used as high birefringence and dispersion flattened fibres. 展开更多
