In hospitals,a medical computed tomography(CT)scan is used to detect damage to infected areas of the human body.Using this technology, scientists and engineers have found a way to detect the internal pore connections and characterize rock samples of oil and gas reservoirs in the petroleum industry.Nowadays, the micro-CT scan technique is gaining considerable interest in reservoir rock characterization and in situ monitoring of fluid flow through porous media during different flooding experiments.Along with this digital rock physics(DRP)idea, images have been used to accurately describe and model for simulations of rock samples. In this review, the application of micro-CT and medical-CT scanning in the oil and gas industry has been thoroughly discussed.Recent improvements in DRP and modern imaging techniques in the oil and gas industry have been modeled using both experimental and simulation work. The combination of a DRP study and a CT scan has also been discussed as a unique idea for the current scenario of research work in this field. The available literature shows that the modern imaging technique and the DRP concept can enable an understanding of the pore network model. It has also been observed that the visualization of fluid flow behavior through porous media is now possible during fluid movement through the core samples. This review contributes to the new research area and aids those in this field in quickly gaining an understanding of applied image techniques in the oil and gas industry. 展开更多

Rotational computed laminography(CL)has broad application potential in three-dimensional imaging of plate-like objects because it only requires X-rays to pass through the tested object in the thickness direction during the imaging process. In this study,a rectangular cross-section field-of-view rotational CL(RC-CL)is proposed for circuit board imaging.Compared to other rotational CL systems, the field of view is the largest and most suitable for rectangular circuit boards.Meanwhile,as the imaging geometry of RC-CL is significantly different from that of cone-beam CT,the Feldkamp-Davis-Kress(FDK)reconstruction algorithm cannot be used directly. However, transferring the projection data to fit into the CBCT geometry using two-dimensional interpolation introduces interpolation errors. Therefore,an FDK-type analytical reconstruction algorithm applicable to RC-CL was developed. The effectiveness of the method was validated through numerical experiments, and the influence of the tilt angle on the reconstruction results was analyzed. Finally, the RC-CL technique was applied to real defect detection research on circuit boards. 展开更多

The quasi-monochromatic,continuously energy-tunable,and high-brightness gamma rays that are produced by an inverse Compton scattering(ICS)light source provide an ideal probe for gamma-ray imaging. However, owing to the influence of the intrinsic energy-angle correlation spectrum of this type of light source, monochromatic computed tomography(CT),especially in the gamma-ray energy region, can only be realized in a low-efficiency manner, similar to first-generation CT.A dual-energy scan scheme with a large imaging field of view(FOV)was developed in this study to improve the imaging efficiency. The effectiveness of this scheme was demonstrated based on the beam parameters of a typical ICS light source using Monte Carlo simulations.By leveraging the principle of basis material decomposition, the influence of the energyangle correlation spectrum on CT reconstruction was corrected, and a monochromatic CT image of the imaging object was accurately reconstructed.Furthermore, the electron density and effective atomic number of the imaging object could be obtained simultaneously. 展开更多

Pressure-preserved coring is a highly effective technique for preserving the structural integrity and fluid composition of reservoir cores. However, the lack of specialized testing methodologies hinders the precise evaluation of pressure-preserved core fidelity parameters. To address this challenge,a comprehensive study was conducted on the entire process of pressure-preserved transfer, cutting, and testing, culminating in the development of a pressure-preserved computed tomography(CT)scanning device. The critical technical challenges encountered during the development process were systematically analyzed through mechanical testing,CT scanning, and numerical simulations.Special emphasis was placed on material influencesduring testing, mechanical assembly interactions, and the accuracy of key parameter measurements in oil and gas exploration.Through comparative analysis and multitiered validation methods, polyether ether ketone(PEEK)material was ultimately selected as the key component of the coring device. The simulation and experimental results demonstrated that PEEK,with a maximum tensile strength of 104 MPa,sufficiently meets most core breakage thresholds of 93.942 MPa.Furthermore,CT scanning revealed a porosity measurement error of only 0.111%,confirmingthe reliability of the pressure-preserved CT test equipment. These findingsoffer valuable guidance for improving the precision of pressure-preserved core testing in deep oil and gas reservoirs. 展开更多

BACKGROUND Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy(LSG)is currently the most commonly performed bariatric surgery owing to its effective weight loss and low complication rates.Nonetheless, some patients experience weight regain or insufficient weight loss due to residual gastric dilation, the factors of which remain unclear.AIM To evaluate changes in residual gastric volume after LSG using three-dimensional computed tomography reconstruction and to investigate the factors contributing to gastric dilation.METHODS This retrospective study included 50 patients who underwent LSG.Preoperative clinical and laboratory data were obtained. The residual gastric volume was measured using three-dimensional computed tomography reconstruction at 1 month and 3 months postoperatively. The total sleeve volume, tube volume, antral volume, and tube-to-antral volume ratio were also assessed.Resected gastric volume and staple line length were measured during surgery.Weight metrics and laboratory indices were recorded at 1 month,3 months,6 months, and 12 months postoperatively. The Eating Behavior After Bariatric Surgery Questionnaire and Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease Questionnaire(GERD-Q)were used to assess the dietary behavior of patients after LSG.Correlation between the degree of residual gastric dilation and percent total weight loss(%TWL)at 12 months postoperatively was analyzed.Univariate and multivariate correlation analyses were conducted to identify risk factors for residual gastric dilation after LSG.RESULTS The 50 included patients had a mean preoperative body mass index of 42.27±7.19 kg/m2 and average%TWL of 34%±7%at 1 year after LSG.At 1 month after LSG,the mean tube volume, antral volume, and total sleeve volume were 45.93±16.75 mL,115.85±44.92 mL,and 161.77±55.37 mL,respectively. At 3 months after LSG,the residual gastric volume showed statistically significant dilation(average dilation degree:13.50%±17.35%).%TWL at 1 year significantly correlated with residual gastric dilation(P<0.05).Univariate and multivariate linear regression analyses revealed that preoperative type 2 diabetes, residual gastric volume at 1 month after LSG,and GERD-Q scores were independent risk factors influencing the degree of residual gastric dilation.CONCLUSION In conclusion, residual gastric dilation after LSG significantly affected the efficacy of weight loss.Preoperative type 2 diabetes, residual gastric volume at 1 month after LSG,and GERD-Q scores were independent risk factors affecting the degree of residual gastric dilation. 展开更多

BACKGROUND Gastric cancer(GC)is the fifth most prevalent and fourth most lethal malignancy globally.China bears a disproportionately high burden, accounting for 44.0%of new cases and 48.6%of deaths worldwide. In early GC(EGC),the presence of lymph node metastasis(LNM)is a critical prognostic determinant that directly guides therapeutic strategy. While multi-detector computed tomography(CT)and serum biomarkers carcinoembryonic antigen(CEA)/carbohydrate antigen 19-9(CA19-9)are established diagnostic tools, each demonstrates limited efficacy when used independently. This study therefore aims to verify whether a combined diagnostic approach integrating multi-detector CT(MDCT)with serum CEA/CA19-9 can significantly improve the accuracy of LNM detection in EGC patients.AIM To investigate the diagnostic value of CT combined with CEA or CA19-9 for detecting LNM in EGC.METHODS This retrospective study included 120 patients with EGC confirmed by gastroscopic biopsy at our institution(Huai’an Hospital of Huai’an City)between February 2024 and August 2024.Based on postoperative pathological findings, participants were categorized into a LNM group(n=60)and a non-metastasis group(n=60).All patients underwent MDCT scanning and serum CEA and CA19-9 level measurements. The diagnostic efficacy of CT,CEA,and CA19-9 alone and in combination was evaluated using receiver operating characteristic(ROC)curve and Kappa consistency analysis.RESULTS Serum analysis showed significantly elevated CEA and CA19-9 levels and higher positivity rates in the metastasis group(P<0.0001).ROC analysis yielded area under the curves of 0.9443(CEA)and 0.9292(CA19-9),with Kappa values of 0.683 and 0.650,respectively.CT revealed significantly greater short-axis diameter,CT attenuation, blood volume, and permeability in metastatic nodes(P<0.05),whereas blood flow and mean transit time showed no significant differences.CT alone demonstrated 85.00%sensitivity and 95.00%specificity(Kappa=0.800).Combined diagnosis improved sensitivity to 91.67%(CT+CEA)and 90.00%(CT+CA19-9),with specificities of 90.00%and 88.33%,respectively.CONCLUSION The combination of CT with CEA or CA19-9 improves sensitivity for detecting LNM in EGC,supporting personalized treatment planning and demonstrating clinical value. 展开更多

BACKGROUND Although photon-counting computed tomography(PCCT)has demonstrated superior dose efficiency and image quality compared with conventional energyintegrating detector computed tomography(EID-CT)in theory and in some clinical fields, systematic evaluations of its performance in abdominal imaging, particularly comprehensive studies incorporating both radiation dose and image quality, remain very limited.AIM To compare radiation dose and image quality between PCCT and conventional EID-CT in abdominal imaging, and to evaluate the potential of PCCT for lowdose,high-quality clinical applications.METHODS Eighty participants were included, comprising 40 subjects who underwent prospective abdominal PCCT and 40 subjects retrospectively matched who underwent routine abdominal EID-CT.Radiation dose parameters[computed tomography dose index(CTDIvol),dose-length product, and effective dose]were recorded. Objective image quality was assessed using signal-to-noise ratio(SNR),contrast-to-noise ratio(CNR),dose-normalized metrics[SNR/(CTDIvol)1/2 and CNR/(CTDIvol)1/2],noise ratio, and excellent image index.Subjective image quality was evaluated by two experienced radiologists using a five-point Likert scale.Intergroup comparisons were performed using appropriate parametric or nonparametric statistical tests.RESULTS Compared with EID-CT,PCCT achieved an approximate 50%reduction in CTDIvol,dose-length product, and effective dose(all P<0.001).PCCT demonstrated significantly higher SNR,CNR,SNR/(CTDIvol)1/2,CNR/(CTDIvol)1/2,and excellent image index, along with a lower noise ratio, indicating superior noise uniformity(all P<0.001).Subjective assessment showed that 77.5%of PCCT images were rated as excellent(Likert score=5),compared with 10.0%in the EID-CT group(P<0.001).CONCLUSION PCCT provides substantially improved dose efficiency and image quality compared with conventional EID-CT in abdominal imaging, supporting its potential role in low-dose clinical computed tomography protocols. 展开更多

BACKGROUND Pulmonary arteriovenous fistulas(PAVFs)are abnormal vascular communications between pulmonary arteries and veins that may cause hypoxemia and paradoxical embolism.Because many patients are asymptomatic,PAVFs are often detected incidentally on chest computed tomography(CT).Accurate identification of PAVFs is clinically important for appropriate management;however, small or atypical lesions may be overlooked during routine interpretation.Computer-aided detection(CAD)systems for pulmonary nodules are widely used in clinical practice, but their ability to detect PAVFs has not been systematically evaluated. We hypothesized that a lung nodule-based artificial intelligence(AI)-CAD system could detect PAVFs on chest CT.AIM To evaluate the detectability of PAVFs on chest CT using an AI-based CAD system for lung nodules.METHODS This retrospective observational study included 21 patients with 26 PAVFs identified at University of the Ryukyus Hospital between 2009 and 2021.Chest CT images, including non-contrast and contrast-enhanced scans, were analyzed using a commercially available AI-based lung nodule CAD system.Detection performance was classified as consistent, conditional,or failed detection, and lesion characteristics associated with successful detection were analyzed.Correlations between CAD-derived measurements and manual measurements were assessed using Pearson’s correlation coefficient. 展开更多

Photoacoustic computed tomography(PACT)is an emerging biomedical imaging modality that uniquely combines high spatial resolution with deep penetration, holding great promise for noninvasive mapping of tissue oxygen saturation(sO2)—a critical biomarker in metabolism and pathophysiology. However, achieving accurate quantitative sO2 mapping is fundamentally challenged by the spatiotemporal heterogeneity of opticalfluence, which leads to the spectral coloring effect and severely distorts measurements in deep tissue. This review systematically summarizes the evolution of quantitative PACT oximetry, critically analyzing techniques devised to overcome this bottleneck. We explore the limitations of linear unmixing and provide a focused analysis of advanced correction strategies, including photon transport modeling,acoustic-spectrum-based self-calibration,multimodality fusion, statistical inference, and learning-based approaches.By synthesizing and contrasting the strengths and weaknesses of these diverse approaches, this review aims to serve as a comprehensive reference for researchers, supporting the development of robust oximetry techniques and facilitating the clinical translation of PACT. 展开更多

Photoacoustic computed tomography(PACT)combines optical functional contrast with ultrasonic spatial resolution, enabling noninvasive structural and functional imaging of deep tissues. However,PACT has inherent limitations, including low soft tissue anatomical contrast,depth-dependent quantitative accuracy, and limited penetration depth.By integrating PACT with ultrasound imaging, magnetic resonance imaging(MRI),optical imaging(fluorescence imaging, optical coherence tomography,Raman imaging),and radiological imaging(CT,SPECT/PET),complementary and enhanced information across modalities can be achieved. This review systematically outlines the principles and mechanisms of multimodal PACT techniques, including hardware integration, image registration, probe development, and dual-modality system design. It also introduces practical applications across fields, including tumor diagnosis, neuroscience, vascular disease assessment, and skin lesion detection.Research indicates that multimodal PACT can integrate structural anatomy, functional metabolism, and molecular specificity information, leading to more comprehensive imaging. This provides a powerful tool for preclinical research and clinical translation, offering broad application prospects. 展开更多

This comprehensive study investigates the formation and evolution of intermetallic compounds during the solidification process of magnesium alloys using advanced micro X-ray computed tomography.By analyzing both common industrial Mg-Al-Zn alloys and a novel rare earth-containing Mg-Ni-Gd-Y alloy,we aim to characterize the nucleation, growth, and distribution of Al-Mn and eutectic intermetallics across various stages of solidification. The non destructive imaging technique employed in this research provides high-resolution,three-dimensional insights into the microstructural development, allowing for a detailed examination of the morphology, spatial arrangement, and interconnectivity of intermetallic phases. This approach overcomes limitations of traditional two-dimensional metallographic methods, offering a more comprehensive understanding of the complex three-dimensional structures formed during solidification. 展开更多

Radiographic identification is currently making an important contribution to forensic anthropology.Several studies have reported that evaluating the maxillary sinus(MS)and the frontal sinus(FS)can be an effective technique for estimating sex. However, there is a lack of data on these measures for modern inhabitants of North Africa,so population-specific norms must be established. This study aims to analyse the correlation between sex and MS and FS measurements in a contemporary Tunisian population using multi-slice computed tomography(MSCT).The study involves a retrospective data collection of 354 cranial MSCTs from 188 men and 166 women. The ASiRTM software was used to create 28 landmarks and measure 24 distances as well as eight volumes. In this study,15 measurements were proposed for the first time, including seven distances and eight volumes. The data were analysed using univariate analysis and logistic regression to create and validate a discriminant equation. The results showed that males had higher mean values of the MS and FS(P<0.05).A six-variable model was able to accurately predict sex with a sensitivity of 77.9%,a specificity of 75.6%,and an accuracy of 76.8%,with a sex bias of−4%.The MS was a better predictor of sex than the FS(accuracy of 70.1%and 65.5%,respectively).The highest accuracy was associated with the minimum inter-maxillary sinus distance. The findings indicate that MS and FS MSCT measurements are highly dimorphic and can provide an accurate alternative for sex estimation in contemporary North African individuals. 展开更多

Pancreatic cancer is a highly lethal malignancy with a rising incidence. An early diagnosis of pancreatic cancer is challenging, and although computed tomography(CT)scans are the primary imaging modality for assessing resectability after neoadjuvant treatment, their accuracy in predicting margin-negative(R0)resection remains a concern. This systematic review and metaanalysis evaluated the role of CT scans in predicting R0 resection in patients with pancreatic cancer post-neoadjuvant therapy.A search of PubMed,Scopus, and Google Scholar was conducted up to October 4,2025,with adherence to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines.Study selection, data extraction, and quality assessment were performed independently by two reviewers.Pooled sensitivity, specificity, and the area under the curve were assessed using the bivariate random-effects model.Nine unique articles providing 10 study estimates met the inclusion criteria.A meta-analysis showed significant heterogeneity for specificity(I2=87%)and sensitivity(I2=90%).Pooled sensitivity was 0.50(95%confidence interval[CI]:0.34–0.66)and pooled specificity was 0.75(95%CI:0.61–0.85).The area under the curve for overall diagnostic performance was 0.69(95%CI:0.65–0.73).The pooled diagnostic odds ratio was 3.00(95%CI:1.85–4.86).Deeks'funnel plot analysis showed no significant publication bias.Although CT scans play a crucial role in pancreatic cancer staging, their ability to predict R0 resection after neoadjuvant therapy is limited by low sensitivity and moderate specificity,as shown by the low area under the curve. These findings indicate the requirement for multimodal preoperative assessment strategies incorporating advanced imaging techniques and other diagnostic modalities to improve surgical planning and patients'outcomes. 展开更多

Background:Although transarterial chemoembolization(TACE)is a widely used locoregional therapy for intermediate-stage hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC),there is substantial inter-patient heterogeneity in treatment response. This study aimed to develop a delta radiomic model based on pre-treatment en-hanced computed tomography(CT)to predict the prognosis of HCC patients undergoing TACE and to reveal tumor heterogeneity. Methods:A total of 269 patients treated with TACE between January 2016 and June 2020 were enrolled from two medical centers and divided into three cohorts:a training cohort(n=126),an internal val-idation cohort(n=84),an external test cohort(n=59).Radiological features of the tumor area were extracted on multiple phases of CT before treatment, and progression-free survival(PFS)was predicted through the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator Cox(LASSO-Cox)regression algorithm.Overall survival(OS)was evaluated using the Kaplan-Meier curve.Genetic and tumor microenvironment differ-ences related to the prognosis of TACE were analyzed in 23 patients with CT from The Cancer Genome Atlas(TCGA).Single-cell data from the comprehensive Gene Expression Omnibus(GEO)public database were used to explore the expression of different genes in cells. Results:The area under the receiver operating characteristic curves of the delta radiomic model for pre-dicting 2-year PFS in TACE-treated patients were 0.812,0.720,and 0.807 in the training, internal vali-dation,and external test cohorts, respectively. The Rad-score was calculated based on radiomic features selected through LASSO.The Rad-score stratified patients into high-and low-risk groups, with significant differences in OS across all cohorts. The high-risk group had a higher immune score. It is worth noting that in the immune infiltration analysis, there were significant differences in B cells, resting CD4 memory T cells, active natural killer cells, and mast cells among different risk groups. Conclusions:The delta radiomics model based on multiphase enhanced CT accurately predicts prognosis and reflects tumor heterogeneity in HCC patients treated with TACE,and contributes to treatment planning. 展开更多

BACKGROUND Extramural vascular invasion(EMVI)represents a crucial high-risk pathological feature in colon cancer, strongly linked to lymph node involvement, distant dissemination, and local recurrence.Advanced analytical techniques such as machine-learning and nomogram modeling enable the integration of multifactorial prognostic variables, facilitating precise risk stratification and individualized therapeutic decision-making.We postulated that computed tomography(CT)-detected EMVI(ctEMVI)served as an independent determinant of disease-free survival(DFS)in patients with colon cancer, and incorporating ctEMVI into machine-learning-driven predictive models alongside clinicopathological variables, within a nomogram-based framework, would enable more accurate individualized postoperative risk stratification and improve DFS prediction.AIM To develop and validate interpretable DFS prediction models for colon cancer by combining multiple machinelearning algorithms with a nomogram framework based on ctEMVI.METHODS In this retrospective analysis, comprehensive clinical, radiological, and pathological information was collected from 101 patients who underwent curative resection for colon cancer.Based on findings from preoperative contrastenhanced CT,patients were stratified into ctEMVI-positive and ctEMVI-negative groups.DFS was estimated using Kaplan-Meier methods and compared with log-rank tests.Prognostic variables independently associated with DFS were identified through Cox proportional hazards regression and subsequently integrated into machine-learningbased predictive models and a nomogram framework. The discriminative ability, calibration accuracy, clinical utility, and interpretability of these models were systematically evaluated using receiver operating characteristic curves, calibration plots, decision curve analysis, and SHapley Additive exPlanations.RESULTS Among 101 patients,40 were ctEMVI-positive and 61 ctEMVI-negative.The ctEMVI was significantly associated with T staging determined by CT,lymph node status determined by CT,pathological T stage, pathological nodal status, lymph node ratio, lymphovascular invasion, and perineural invasion(all P<0.05).During follow-up,29 patients experienced recurrence or metastasis, including 19 in the ctEMVI-positive group, which showed significantly poorer DFS.Multivariate Cox analysis identified ctEMVI,pathological nodal status, lymphovascular invasion, and perineural invasion as independent predictors of DFS.The nomogram demonstrated good performance, with area under the receiver operating characteristic curve values of 0.791(95%CI:0.644-0.937)for 1-year and 0.796(95%CI:0.686-0.906)for 3-year DFS,while CoxBoost achieved the best 2-year DFS prediction(area under the receiver operating characteristic curve=0.773,95%CI:0.659-0.886).SHapley Additive exPlanations analysis confirmed model interpretability and variable importance.CONCLUSION The ctEMVI was a significant prognostic factor in colon cancer, and CoxBoost and nomogram models accurately predicted DFS after curative resection. 展开更多

BACKGROUND Tibial plateau fractures(TPFs),although comprising only 1%of all fractures, pose significant diagnostic and management challenges due to their frequent association with meniscal and ligamentous injuries.Computed tomography(CT),widely employed in preoperative assessment of TPFs,may provide predictive insights into soft tissue injuries.AIM To evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of preoperative quantitative CT parameters in predicting meniscal and cruciate ligament injuries associated with TPFs.METHODS A systematic review was conducted per the PRISMA guidelines. Two databases(PubMed and Scopus)were searched up to October 2024.Studies were included if they involved skeletally mature patients with TPFs,reported at least one CT parameter predictive of soft tissue injury, and used arthroscopy or open surgery as the diagnostic gold standard.A risk of bias assessment was conducted using the Quality Assessment of Diagnostic Accuracy Studies 2 tool, and meta-analyses were performed where appropriate, using the random-effects model.RESULTS Lateral plateau depression(LPD)and lateral plateau widening(LPW)were the most commonly assessed parameters.Pooled analysis revealed that LPD and LPW were significantly higher in patients with lateral meniscus injuries(mean difference,5.23 mm and 1.37 mm,respectively;P<0.00001 and P=0.02).No significant associations were found for medial plateau depression or LPD with medial meniscus or posterior cruciate ligament injuries.Lateral area of depression and LPW were reported in a single study to be predictive of anterior cruciate ligament injuries.CONCLUSION Preoperative CT parameters, particularly LPD and LPW,provide a strong predictive value for lateral meniscus injuries in TPFs,potentially aiding in early diagnosis and management. However, their utility in predicting cruciate or medial meniscus injuries remains limited.CT scan remains a valuable first-line tool, especially where magnetic resonance imaging is inaccessible, and can guide further investigation or intraoperative planning. 展开更多
