Background:Physical fitness is a key indicator of current and future health in children and adolescents.Evidence suggests that fitness levels have declined then stagnated in recent decades, but it remains unclear how the coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)pandemic has impacted this trend. Methods:We conducted a systematic review and meta-analyses to assess pandemic-related changes in physical fitness among children and adolescents(0-19 years)in the World Health Organization European Region.Seven databases were searched up to February 28,2025 for studies reporting validated pre-and during/post-pandemic fitness measurements. Two reviewers independently performed screening, data extraction,risk-of-bias assessment(Risk Of Bias In Non-randomized Studies-of Exposure)(ROBINS-E),and certainty grading(Grading of Recommendations,Assessment,Development and Evaluation)(GRADE).Random-effects meta-analyses yielded standardized mean differences(SMDs)with 95%confidence intervals(95%CIs).Subgroup analyses examined sex, age, year, and national restriction severity(Oxford Stringency Index).Results:Thirty-two studies comprising 270,179 participants and 1,519,386 fitness measurements from 17 European countries were included.Cardiorespiratory fitness declined significantly during the pandemic, especially in 2021,with reductions in endurance(SMD=-0.43;95%CI:-0.61 to-0.25)and speed(SMD=-0.29;95%CI:-0.61 to 0.03).While speed returned to baseline by 2023,endurance remained below pre-pandemic levels(SMD=-0.10;95%CI:-0.12 to-0.08).Girls and adolescents were disproportionately affected. In contrast to cardiorespiratory fitness, muscular fitness remained largely unchanged.Stricter national regulations were associated with greater declines in cardiorespiratory fitness.Conclusion:COVID-19 pandemic restrictions were associated with a marked decline in cardiorespiratory fitness in European children and adolescents, with levels not recovered by 2023.These findings call for urgent, targeted public health interventions to improve physical fitness and prevent long-term health consequences. 展开更多

BACKGROUND The global decline in youth physical fitness and the concurrent rise in overweight and obesity have led to an increasing prevalence of non-communicable diseases, with low-income and middle-income countries disproportionately affected.AIM To determine the Healthy Fitness Zone(HFZ)achievement rates of Nigerian children and adolescents on the 20-meter shuttle run test and body mass index(BMI)using the FitnessGram criterion-referenced health standards.METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted involving 3225 school-aged children and adolescents[boys(n=1522);girls(n=1703)],aged 9-16 years, from Benue State,Nigeria.Cardiorespiratory fitness(CRF)was assessed using the FitnessGram 20-meter shuttle run test, and converted to aerobic capacity(AC)values, while BMI served as a proxy for body fat.Sex and age differences in CRF and BMI were examined using factorial analysis of covariance.Participants'HFZ achievement rates were determined based on FitnessGram standards.RESULTS The Healthy Fitness Zone achievement rates for AC were 82.7%for males and 78.7%for females.Younger children(9-11 years)exhibited higher compliance with CRF standards than older adolescents,a trend consistent across both sexes.Males consistently outperformed females in CRF.Regarding BMI,both sexes showed high achievement rates–94.5%for males and 96.9%for females.Compared to Hungarian,European and American youth,Nigerian children and adolescents outperformed their international counterparts. In terms of BMI,Nigerian youth of both sexes outperformed their international peers.CONCLUSION Based on FitnessGram standards,Nigerian youth demonstrated favorable AC and body composition relative to international peers.Nevertheless, there were sex and age disparities in AC,with adolescent females and older males at greater risk of falling below health standards.Interventions promoting regular endurance-based physical activity are urgently needed to mitigate future cardiovascular disease risks. 展开更多

The application of interference bushings in Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer(CFRP)joints has demonstrated significant potential in enhancing fatigue life performance. However, the lack of in-depth research on key installation process parameters—particularly interference fit size and installation speed—has limited broader application of this technique. To fill in this gap, this study designed a series of experiments to investigate the effects of these two parameters on the fatigue performance of CFRP/Ti double-lap joints. This study utilized stress wave separation technology to accurately measure the installation displacement, speed, and resistance under varying installation speeds.Real-time structural damage monitoring was conducted through circumferential strain measurements and acoustic emission analysis.By establishing a correlation among installation parameters, damage characteristics, and fatigue life outcomes, the study reveals that a smaller interference fit size combined with a higher installation speed can effectively reduce installationinduced damage and significantly enhance joint fatigue performance. 展开更多

Purpose:Examining the alignment(or“fit”)of China’s science and technology talent policies provides valuable insights into the challenges and shortcomings in supporting talent development, thereby offering a foundation for enhanced policy design and support.Design/methodology/approach:This study introduces a policy fit analysis framework, which decomposes policy fit into three dimensions:consistency fit, embeddedness fit,and compensatory fit.By employing quantitative research methods, the study conducts a multidimensional analysis of China’s science and technology talent policies over the period from 2014 to 2023.Findings:The findings indicate that, after a decade of evolution,China’s policy system for science and technology talent has largely matured into a relatively stable framework, with policy fit demonstrating an upward trend over time. However, several challenges persist. For instance, the policy system places a disproportionate emphasis on talent cultivation and development, while comparatively fewer policies address the introduction, aggregation, and strategic planning of talent.Additionally, there are observable gaps between policy objectives and actual outcomes,as well as a misalignment between policy supply and the demands of talent development.Research limitations:The framework of policy fit analysis proposed by the study can only analyze policies at the same level, but it cannot conduct cross-level analysis. In the empirical analysis, the policy texts analyzed were limited to publicly available documents.Practical implications:The findings provide new perspectives and methodologies for policy evaluation, expanding the scope of existing policy analysis, and also offer meaningful guidance for policymakers and relevant administrative personnel.Originality/value:This paper introduces, for the first time,a policy fit analysis framework, addressing a gap in the study of policy alignment. 展开更多

Lung transplantation(LTx)is the definitive therapy for patients with end-stage lung disease and improves survival. However, many recipients continue to experience exercise intolerance, reduced physical capacity, and limitations in daily activities despite improved postoperative lung function. These impairments are multifactorial and closely associated with quality of life(QoL)and long-term outcomes.Pulmonary rehabilitation(PR)is a multidisciplinary intervention aimed at improving exercise capacity, physical fitness, and QoL and has demonstrated benefits across various chronic lung diseases. This narrative review synthesizes current evidence on PR in LTx recipients.A literature review was conducted to summarize PR program characteristics, safety, and reported outcomes across lung function, functional capacity, muscle fitness, activity and participation, and QoL,considering heterogeneity in study design and intervention protocols.Across the reviewed studies,PR participation was consistently associated with improvements in cardiorespiratory fitness, muscle strength, functional capacity, and QoL.In contrast, changes in spirometric parameters were generally modest.Functional improvements appear to be largely mediated by peripheral adaptations, including enhanced oxygen utilization and neuromuscular performance. These findings highlight the potential role of PR as an important component of short-and long-term management in LTx recipients, particularly during pre-transplant conditioning and post-transplant functional recovery phases. 展开更多

Background:Midlife lifestyle factors, including physical activity, are associated with late-life brain health, yet the role of aerobic exercise on structural brain health in early and mid-adulthood remains poorly understood. This study aimed to examine the effect of aerobic exercise on structural brain age and to explore potential mediators. Methods:In a single-blind,12-month randomized clinical trial,130 healthy participants aged 26-58 years were randomized into a moderate-to-vigorous intensity aerobic exercise group or a usual-care control group. The exercise group attended two supervised 60-min sessions per week in a laboratory setting plus engaged in home-based exercise to achieve 150 min of exercise per week.Brain-predicted age difference(brain-PAD)and cardiorespiratory fitness(CRF)were assessed at baseline and 12 months. Both intention-to-treat(ITT)and completers analyses(including participants who completed post-intervention assessments)were performed. Results:The 130 participants(67.7%female)had an age of 41.28±9.93 years(mean±SD).At baseline, higher CRF(peak oxygen uptake,VO2peak)was associated with smaller brain-PAD(β=-0.309,p=0.012).After the intervention, the exercise group showed a decrease in brainPAD(estimated mean difference(EMD)=-0.60;95%confidence interval(95%CI):-1.15 to-0.04;p=0.034)compared to the control group(EMD=0.35;95%CI:-0.21 to 0.92;p=0.217);time×group interaction(between-group difference(BGD)=-0.95;95%CI:-1.72 to-0.17;p=0.019).VO2peak improved in the exercise group(EMD=1.60;95%CI:0.29-2.90;p=0.017)compared to the control group(EMD=-0.78;95%CI:-2.17 to 0.60;p=0.265);time×group interaction(BGD=2.38;95%CI:0.52-4.25;p=0.015).Body composition, blood pressure, and brain-derived neurotrophic factor levels were unaffected.None of the proposed pathways statistically mediated the effect of exercise on brain-PAD.The results from completers were similar. Conclusion:Engaging in 12 months of moderate-to-vigorous exercise reduced brain-PAD in early-to-midlife adults. The pathways by which these effects occur remain unknown. 展开更多

The evolution of SARS-CoV-2 has been driven by successive globally circulating waves, including the Alpha and Delta lineages, early Omicron(BA.1-BA.5),XBB,and the recently dominant JN.1 lineages.Although the marked advantage in fitness of early Omicron over Delta lineages has been recognized, there is a lack of systematic evaluation of SARS-CoV-2 fitness across 2020 to 2025.Here,we analyzed 15.23 million SARS-CoV-2 genomes available through May 2025.The accumulation of mutations in the spike protein of the virus has continued to accelerate over time, whereas the trend slowed in the other viral proteins.Using a Bayesian genomic-epidemiological framework,we estimated that lineage fitness increased approximately linearly from 2021 to 2025.Notably,JN.1 lineages exhibited a significantly higher rate of fitness gain than their predecessor XBB and earlier Omicron lineages. We further analyzed characteristic mutations of JN.1 and found that those in the receptor-binding domain were associated with larger alterations in residue hydropathy, charge, and structural surface exposure relative to other lineages. These findings suggest JN.1 as a distinct evolutionary stage and underscore the importance of sustained genomic surveillance. 展开更多

Fusarium crown rot(FCR),predominantly caused by Fusarium pseudograminearum, has been listed as a Category Ⅱ disease in six provinces of China, posing a significant threat to wheat production. The phenylpyrrole fungicide fludioxonil is a key agent for FCR control.Previous studies indicated that resistance to fludioxonil in F.pseudograminearum is primarily associated with altered expression levels of the FpOS1 gene, which encodes a hybrid histidine kinase. However, the roles of mutations in other FpOS genes and the molecular interactions between FpOS proteins and fludioxonil remain elusive. To address these gaps,we generated 16 fludioxonil-resistant mutants with heritable resistance traits by in vitro selection of four sensitive F.pseudograminearum isolates. These mutants exhibited high resistance levels, with resistance factors(RF)ranging from 633.73 to 8617.07.Compared to their parental isolates, the resistant mutants showed significantly reduced mycelial growth rate, sporulation capacity, and pathogenicity. They were also more sensitive to ionic, osmotic, and oxidative stresses and displayed compromised cell wall and membrane integrity.Fludioxonil demonstrated no cross-resistance with tebuconazole or pydiflumetofen;however,it exhibited weak positive crossresistance to pyraclostrobin and moderate positive cross-resistance to iprodione.Fludioxonil treatment significantly promoted glycerol synthesis and inhibited deoxynivalenol(DON)production in parental isolates, whereas these regulatory effects were markedly attenuated in the resistant mutants.Mutation analysis identified mutation sites in FpOS1,FpOS4,and FpOS5 genes, with a lower mutation frequency in FpOS1 and no mutations detected in FpOS2.Molecular docking indicated that amino acid substitutions in FpOS4 and FpOS5 significantly reduced the binding affinity of fludioxonil to these target proteins. In conclusion,F.pseudograminearum poses a moderate risk of resistance to fludioxonil.Point mutations in FpOS4 and FpOS5 genes emerge as key molecular drivers of resistance, likely by diminishing the binding affinity between the fungicide and its proteins. This study clarifies the molecular basis of fludioxonil resistance in F.pseudograminearum and provides a scientific rationale for the judicious use of this fungicide in managing FCR. 展开更多

Energy expenditure estimation can be used to measure the exercise load and physical condition of different individuals, such as soldiers, athletes, firemen, etc., during their training and work. Energy expenditure estimation methods based on computer vision have rapidly developed in recent years. Compared with sensor-based methods, such methods are capable of monitoring several target persons at the same time, and the subjects do not need to wear different sensor devices that hamper their movement. In this paper, we propose a cross-attention spatial–temporal convolutional neural network to predict the energy expenditure of people under different exercise intensities. The model explores the relationship between changes in the human skeleton and energy expenditure intensity. In addition, a cross-attention correction module is used to reduce the negative effects of individual physical fitness characteristics during energy expenditure estimation. The experimental results show that our proposed method achieves high accuracy for energy expenditure estimation and performs better than existing computer vision-based energy expenditure estimation methods do. The proposed method can be widely used in various physical activity scenarios to measure energy expenditure, increasing the convenience of usage. 展开更多

Focusing on the ineffective supervision and formalized operation of adolescent physical fitness management in the context of global health education reform, this study aims to explore feasible optimization paths for campus physical education management.Adopting document sorting and logical analysis methods, this paper summarizes the practical drawbacks of current student physical detection mechanisms and daily sports teaching administration. The research results indicate that traditional school sports management generally faces problems such as idle health data, disjointed teaching supervision, and imperfect whole-process working mechanisms. This study constructs a set of refined,data-based,and systematic management optimization schemes suitable for adolescent physical education. The reconstructed management framework can effectively connect daily fitness monitoring results with campus teaching arrangements, which is conducive to implementing the health-oriented educational goal in school physical education. This research may provide certain theoretical references and practical ideas for improving the standardized construction of school physical education management. 展开更多

Measuring cardiorespiratory fitness(CRF)is an important predictor of morbidity and mortality in epidemiological studies and clinical settings.1 However, the feasibility of measuring maximal CRF is low due to the time, equipment, and expertise needed to conduct laboratory cardiopulmonary exercise testing(CPET)to determine the maximal rate of oxygen uptake(VO2max)as an objective measure of CRF.Alternatively, indirect estimates of CRF have been applied by measuring maximal duration on treadmill or cycle ergometer tests,2,3 extrapolating maximal CRF from workload or heart rate during submaximal fitness tests,4,5 and using non-exercise algorithms to estimate CRF from an individual’s age, sex, body mass, and physical activity habits.6 It is assumed that objectively measured VO2max is superior to extrapolated and estimated values due to errors associated with the estimated values;7,8 however, until Singh et al.9 newly released article in the Journal of Sport and Health Science, the comparability of these methods in identifying risks for all-cause and cardiovascular disease(CVD)mortality was unknown. 展开更多
