The present work suggested the use of waste oil palm frond as an alternative precursor for nitrogendoped carbon quantum dots(NCQDs)and proposed a straightforward in-situ hydrothermal method for the preparation of NCQDs/TiO2nanocomposites.The elemental composition,morphological,structural and optical characteristics of NCQDs/TiO2nanocomposites have been comprehensively investigated.The successful grafting of NCQDs on TiO2matrix was confirmed by the formation of Ti AOAC bond and the electronic coupling between theπ-states of NCQDs and the conduction band of TiO2.For the first time,the oil palm frond-derived NCQDs/TiO2was adopted in the photodegradation of methylene blue(MB)under visible-light irradiation.As a result,the photocatalytic efficiency of NCQDs/TiO2nanocomposites(86.16%)was 2.85 times higher than its counterpart TiO2(30.18%).The enhanced performance of nanocomposites was attributed to the pivotal roles of NCQDs serving as electron mediator and visiblelight harvester.Besides,the optimal NCQDs loading was determined at 4 ml while the removal efficiency of NCQDs/TiO2-4 was the highest at a catalyst dosage of 1 g.L-1under alkaline condition.This research work is important as it proposed a new insight to the preparation of biomass-based NCQDs/TiO2using a facile synthetic method,which offers a green and sustainable water remediation technology. 展开更多

Natural fibers have become essential elements to produce composites, which have the renewability, sustainability, low cost and less health hazardous. Natural wastes improved the physical and mechanical properties of polyester-based composites. Reinforced polyester composites with natural fibers are spread widely in recent decades as an alternative to synthetics. This paper deals with effectiveness of palm fronds when they were added to a polyester. Percentage of palm fibers with respect to polyester is considered through present work. A Pin-on-disc tribometer has been used in experimental work under external forces, and the correlations of coefficient of friction have been used to make analysis of the experimental results. Ibertest universal testing machine was used to measure the tensile strength at a crosshead speed of 8 mm/min. The experimental analysis shows the improvement of properties of the used reinforced polyester, where, the results show that the highest values of coefficient of friction are 1.16667 for 5 N load and the lowest value is 0.55 for 9 N load. And the change for load 11 N is not significant. And also, 7.01 MPa is the highest value for tensile strength with the lowest value of modulus of rigidity 5.84 when the palm frond content is 3% and the lowest value of tensile test is 4.81 MPa with the highest value of modulus of rigidity 11.9 when 21% content. 展开更多

Phenol is classified as an emerging contaminant which can be very toxic even at low concentrations and should be removed from wastewaters before reaching the environment.In this study date palm frond and leaf were pyrolyzed at different temperatures to identify the best adsorbent(feedstock)and pyrolysis temperature to remove phenol from aqueous solutions.Date palm frond pyrolyzed at 600℃,termed DPF600,achieved the highest phenol removal rates of 64%and adsorption capacity of 15.93 mg/g.Response surface methodology approach using Box-Behnken design was implemented to obtain the optimal pH(6),contact time(20 h)and dosage(0.1 g)for the maximum phenol adsorption.A predicted adsorption capacity was found as 16.62 mg/g which was in close agreement with the experimental adsorption capacity of 17.38 mg/g.Isotherm and kinetic models in both linear and non-linear forms indicated that Freundlich model(R2=0.99,χ2=0.02,RMSE=1.09)and pseudo-second order model(R2=0.99,χ2=0.85,RMSE=5.41)fit best the obtained experimental data.Thermodynamics calculations affirmed that the adsorption of phenol onto DPF600 biochar was endothermic and spontaneous.The point of zero charge was found to be at 6.5 for DPF600 biochar.Scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive X-ray,Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction confirmed adsorption of phenol onto DPF600 biochar.Application of DPF600 biochar to remove phenol from synthetic primary and secondary treated wastewater samples achieved 60 and 85%removal rates and 241 mg/g and 22.28 mg/g adsorption capacities,respectively.Regeneration studies showed promising adsorption capacities indicating the efficacy of DPF600 for the removal of phenol from wastewater. 展开更多

The utilization of oil palm biomass in the production of high-value products has increased substantially.Due to the presence of sugars and starches in their tissues,oil palms have an exceptionally low natural resistance to fungi,making them susceptible to contamination.In this study,the properties of particleboard made from oil palmfibers,namely empty fruit bunches(EFB),oil palm trunks(OPT),and oil palm fronds(OPF)fibers and its poten-tial for fungal attack were evaluated.The chemical composition,spectroscopic characterization,morphological features,and elemental analysis of oil palm biomassfibers were identified and thoroughly examined.The mechan-ical properties and dimensional stability of the boards were assessed based on Japanese Industrial Standards(JIS)and American National Standards Institute(ANSI)guidelines.The density,strength,and moisture resistance of particleboard made from OPTfibers may vary from those made from OPF and EFB due to inherent changes in chemical composition andfiber structure.These differences have an impact on the overall performance of the particleboard.Based on the ANOVA and Tukey’s test results,significant differences in elasticity properties were observed mainly between OPT and otherfibers,while bending strength revealed notable differences between various pairs of particleboards.The evaluation also highlighted variations in dimensional stability and water absorption capabilities.However,bending strength properties did not demonstrate any significant deviations.For the fungi test,fungal activity on the boards was observed over a two-week period in a controlled environment.The study revealed that oil palm-based particleboard exhibited susceptibility to fungal attacks,particularly from Aspergillus sp.,Trichoderma sp.,and Paecilomyces variotii.Thesefindings highlight the necessity for additional treatments to control or prevent fungal growth,thereby enhancing the commercial value of the particleboards. 展开更多

Objective:To study the morphology,biochemistry and bioactivity of the epidermal glands of the glandular morphotype of Christella parasitica(C.parasitica)(L.) H.Lev.Methods: Morphological studies on epidermal glands were earned out by using light microscope and scanning electron microscope.To prepare the extract,the shade-dried fronds of glandular morphotype were soaked in acetone.For antibacterial studies paper disc method was followed by using various pathogenic bacteria.Results:Detailed micromorphological,phytochemical and bioactivity studies on a medicinal fern C.parasitica(L.) H.Lev.showed its inlraspecific variation in antibacterial activity.The presence or absence of the epidermal glands was the key factor for antibacterial activity in the morphovariants of this species.The epidermal glands were orange-coloured,stalked and elongated ones of about 84.2μm×45μm,and distributed on the undersurface of cosla,coslules and veins in croziers,young and mature leaves.Frequency of glands varied from 15/cm on costa in mature leaves to 140/cm on costules in croziers.The acetone extract of the glands showed antibacterial activities and also toxic effect against mosquito larvae and tadpoles of frog.Preliminary phytochemical analysis and HPLC studies of the gland extract showed the presence of various kinds of terpenoids,alkaloids,tannins,saponins and flavonoids in it.Conclusions:The present study shows that epidermal glands of the glandular morphotype of C. parasitica(L.) H.Lev.have several bioactive compounds and such rare moiphovariant should be conserved in nature.The next step is to isolate the pure compounds and to screen the bioactivity of individual compounds of the epidermal glands. 展开更多

Study on the early development of sporelings from carpospores of Gracilaria asiatica Chang et Xia was conducted indoors under controlled culture conditions. Besides normal development of sporelings, a new developmental phenomenon of filamentous frond was observed. It was composed of one or two rows of cells, and took place from the outmost brim of the basal disc. During the early disc stage of germinated carpospores, one or two filamentous fronds formed on about 10% basal discs. Simul-taneously, young fronds began to arch slightly from the centers of single and coalescent discs; lately more filamentous fronds up to 80% appeared on the brims of basal discs. Meanwhile one or more upright fronds protuberated on the basal discs. Generally, filamentous fronds exhibited in self-existence or co-existence forms with normal young sporelings on the same basal disc, and single cell detached from filamentous fronds developed into a new filamentous frond. This new phenomenon exhibited a unique differentiation pathway during the early development of G. asiatica, which would be potential for the ap-plication in artificial sporelings nursery. 展开更多

目的建立荚果蕨贯众提取物中3种主要黄酮类成分的含量测定方法,并对荚果蕨贯众提取物的抗氧化能力进行评价。方法采用HPLC测定提取物中黄酮类成分含量。色谱柱为Kromasil C18柱(4.6 mm×250 mm,5μm);流动相为甲醇-水(水中含0.1%磷... 目的建立荚果蕨贯众提取物中3种主要黄酮类成分的含量测定方法,并对荚果蕨贯众提取物的抗氧化能力进行评价。方法采用HPLC测定提取物中黄酮类成分含量。色谱柱为Kromasil C18柱(4.6 mm×250 mm,5μm);流动相为甲醇-水(水中含0.1%磷酸)70∶30;流速为1.00 mL·min-1;检测波长295 nm;柱温40℃。采用DPPH自由基清除法评价提取物抗氧化活性。结果对照品去甲氧基荚果蕨素、荚果蕨素、荚果蕨黄素记为D1、D2、D3分别在0.058~0.58、0.045~0.45、0.003~0.028 mg·mL-1内线性关系良好,r分别为0.999 8、0.999 8、0.998 3,平均回收率分别为96.93%、97.15%、96.41%。以IC50值(清除率为50%时,抗氧化剂的浓度值)作为评价指标,测得荚果蕨贯众提取物的IC50值为0.55 mg·mL-1。结论此含量测定方法具有良好的准确性,重复性和稳定性,可用于荚果蕨贯众提取物的质量控制。该提取物具有一定的抗氧化活性。 展开更多

浮萍暴发式生长给河道、湖泊、池塘等水体生态环境造成了较大困扰。探讨中草药提取液对浮萍植物的生长影响,以期为新型植物源除草剂的研制提供科学依据。通过对浮萍表观生长状态观察及对叶绿素、生物量等生长指标的检测,研究了7种常见... 浮萍暴发式生长给河道、湖泊、池塘等水体生态环境造成了较大困扰。探讨中草药提取液对浮萍植物的生长影响,以期为新型植物源除草剂的研制提供科学依据。通过对浮萍表观生长状态观察及对叶绿素、生物量等生长指标的检测,研究了7种常见中草药(甘草、地锦草、金钱草、泽漆、泽泻、黄连、鱼腥草)提取液对紫背浮萍(Soirodela polyrhiza)生长的影响。结果表明:黄连提取液对浮萍叶状体分蘖的抑制作用最佳,培养期间浮萍叶状体数几乎未增加;地锦草提取液对浮萍生物量增长的抑制能力最佳,培养96 h后浮萍生物量下降至对照组的69%;泽泻提取液对浮萍色素水平的影响最大,培养96 h后实验组叶绿素含量下降55%以上,杀青效果明显。因此,从中草药宝库中寻找抑制浮萍暴发的植物源除草剂是可行的。 展开更多

为探究并优化浮萍人工培养技术,研究以广布种紫萍(Spirodela polyrrhiza)和青萍(Lemna minor)为主要研究对象,探索两种浮萍植物在不同营养水平的Hoagland和Hunter培养液中的鲜重、叶状体数的生长变化状况。结果表明:(1)紫萍和青萍鲜重在... 为探究并优化浮萍人工培养技术,研究以广布种紫萍(Spirodela polyrrhiza)和青萍(Lemna minor)为主要研究对象,探索两种浮萍植物在不同营养水平的Hoagland和Hunter培养液中的鲜重、叶状体数的生长变化状况。结果表明:(1)紫萍和青萍鲜重在Hoagland培养液的不同营养水平下先增加后减少,而在Hunter营养液中呈持续增长趋势;两种浮萍的鲜重最大相对增长率(RGR)分别为0.11和0.18,鲜重受浮萍品种和培养基类型及其不同营养水平影响显著(P<0.05),以青萍在Hunter原液培养基下的无性繁殖产生的生物量最高。(2)紫萍和青萍叶状体数在Hoagland培养液的不同营养水平下先增加后减少,而同鲜重一样在Hunter营养液中呈不断增长趋势;两种浮萍的叶状体最大相对增长率分别为0.14和0.19,叶状体生长的RGR变化同样受浮萍品种和培养基类型及营养水平影响显著(P<0.05),以青萍在Hunter原液的营养环境下收获的叶状体数最高。(3)两种浮萍在Hoagland和Hunter营养液的不同营养水平下鲜重/叶状体比呈下降趋势,表明两种浮萍在适应不同营养时优先繁殖子代叶状体,以扩大种的适合度。研究认为Hunter原液可作为广布种青萍的最优培养条件,可实现短时间内收获较大浮萍鲜生物量和叶状体数,为进一步资源化利用提供原材料。 展开更多

Agriculture residues of oil palm waste are a big issue for palm oil producing countries.The residues from oil palm fronds are the most crucial to convert wealth.This study focused on oil palm-related agro biomass for mushroom substrate formulation for grey oyster mushroom cultivation.Mushrooms are a highly perishable vegetable that turn into postharvest waste within 4 to 7 d at normal temperatures.Therefore,in this study,the unsold mushroom was converted as a cracker food product to reduce the postharvest losses,especially for small-scale mushroom growers.The agriculture biomass used for substrate preparation is a combination of oil palm frond(OPF),oil palm empty fruit bunch(EFB),palm pressed fiber(PPF),and sawdust(SD).SD as a commercial substrate was used as a control in this study,and rice bran(RB)and lime(L)were used as supplement ingredients for all the treatments.The treatments were according to mixed formulation with the ratio of T0(control:97.2%SD,0.8%RB+2%L),T1 as a mixed ratio(60%RS+22.2%EFB+15%PPF+0.8%RB+2%L)and T2 as a mixed ratio(60%OPF+22.2%EFB+15%SD+0.8%RB+2%L).The total yield in four cycles showed 1.2 kg in T0(sawdust),1.4 kg in T1(majority of rice straw),and 1.5 kg(majority of oil palm frond)in T3 treated substrate.In this study,the oil palm frond was received free of charge as compared to sawdust and rice straw.Therefore,it showed that using the oil palm frond not only gave a high yield of mushrooms at the same time,it was 100 X lower in cost.Next,the unsold yielded mushrooms were used for cracker preparation.The results obtained from this study indicate that mushroom crackers contain fat(11.34%),protein(2.19%),and carbohydrate(76.55%)while being high in moisture(7.87%)and ash(2.06%)compared to commercial potato crackers.Overall acceptance of sensory evaluation towards mushroom crackers showed a high'extremely like'percentage,contributing about 66%.Thus,this study found that 66%of participants'extremely liked'the new innovative mushroom crackers.Overall,the results show that oil palm substrate can be an alternative economical substrate for grey oyster mushroom cultivation and food products from mushrooms will be new items in the snack industry. 展开更多
