With the development of urban infrastructure,it is inevitable that shield tunnels will undercross intercity railways. However, the safe operation of intercity railways requires strict subgrade deformation. On the basis of the engineering background of the Lianghu Tunnel in Wuhan, the three-dimensional centrifuge test and numerical back analysis were used to study the development of subgrade surface settlement during shield tunneling.A three-dimensional numerical model with the same size as the prototype was subsequently established to further study the settlement development and torsion behavior of the subgrade during tunnel excavation. The results show that the maximum settlement point of the transverse settlement trough gradually moves to the tunnel axis during tunnel excavation and that the entire subgrade experiences torsional deformation. Moreover, the effect of the intersection angle between the axes of the tunnel and the subgrade on the surface settlement of the subgrade was further studied. The results show that the intersection angle has no effect on the maximum settlement, but the width of the settlement trough increases gradually with increasing angle. Finally,on the basis of the soil arching effect caused by tunnel excavation, the subgrade settlement during tunnel excavation is reduced by reinforcing the soil in different zones of soil arching. The results show that the settlement of the subgrade caused by the shield tunnel can be effectively controlled by adding reinforcement directly to the top of the tunnel, and the maximum settlement of the subgrade surface is reduced from 24.41 mm to 9.47 mm,a reduction of approximately 61.2%. 展开更多

A full-scale research study was conducted during the bored tunnelling of the Klang Valley Mass Rapid Transit-Putrajaya Line beneath an existing building structure in Kuala Lumpur,Malaysia. The primary objective was to investigate the tunnel-soil-pile interaction at various stages of tunnel excavation. This study combined field measurements and three-dimensional(3D)numerical analysis to understand the transient effects of TBM tunnelling on a loaded pile.An experimental pile was instrumented with vibrating wire strain gauges,an inclinometer, and distributed fibre optic sensors using Brillouin optical time domain analysis. The pile was pre-loaded and continuously monitored in real-time throughout the tunnel construction process. The 3D finite element modelling was used to simulate the pile’s transient responses based on actual tunnel boring machine(TBM)driving data. The study revealed that the zone of influence due to tunnelling effects extended from y¼2D to y¼4D,with the peak effect observed at y¼1D to 1.5D,where D represents the tunnel diameter. The analysis of axial load patterns highlighted transient responses, including tensile loads below the tunnel invert, which propagated upward and subsided due to negative skin friction. The maximum downdrag load observed reached 56%e71%of the pile’s working load.Additionally, pile movement patterns indicated outward deflections as the TBM approached and a return toward the tunnel post-passage,aligning with the predicted behaviour in a negative face loss scenario. This validated numerical framework provides a solid foundation for further parametric studies and enhances the understanding of tunnel-soil-pile interactions. 展开更多

This study presents a numerical analysis of the effects of a rigid flat wall with oscillating motion on the pressure wave propagation during a single spherical cavitation bubble collapse at different initial bubble positions.Different nondimensional distances S=0.8,0.9,1.0,1.1,1.2 and 1.3 were considered to investigate the effects of initial in-phase and out-of-phase oscillations of the flat wall.Numerical simulations of cavitation bubble collapse near an oscillating wall were conducted using a compressible two-phase flow model. This model incorporated the Volume of Fluid(VOF)interface-sharpening technique on a general curvilinear moving grid. The numerical results were consistent with published experimental data. The simulation examined the impact of oscillating walls on bubble behavior and the resulting pressure peaks observed on the wall surface. The numerical results demonstrate the significant impact of wall oscillation conditions on bubble collapse and migration behavior, and consequently, the generation of pressure waves with significantly different propagation and pressure peaks induced by shock impact on the rigid wall.Different behaviors were observed in the trendlines of the pressure peaks and maximum jet velocity under in-phase and out-of-phase oscillating walls, with distinct values. At S≥1.0,a higher-pressure peak on the wall was observed in the case of the out-of-phase oscillating condition, whereas a higher-pressure peak was found in the case of the in-phase condition at S<1.0.The highest-pressure peak was found at S=0.8 in trend lines of in-phase and S=1.1 in trend lines of out-of-phase oscillation effects. 展开更多

Tunnelling related hazards are very common in the Himalayan terrain and a number of such instances have been reported. Several twin tunnels are being planned for transportation purposes which will require good understanding for prediction of tunnel deformation and surface settlement during the engineering life of the structure. The deformational behaviour, design of sequential excavation and support of any jointed rock mass are challenging during underground construction. We have raised several commonly assumed issues while performing stability analysis of underground opening at shallow depth. For this purpose, Kainchi-mod Nerchowck twin tunnels(Himachal Pradesh, India) are taken for in-depth analysis of the stability of two asymmetric tunnels to address the influence of topography, twin tunnel dimension and geometry. The host rock encountered during excavation is composed mainly of moderately to highly jointed grey sandstone, maroon sandstone and siltstones. In contrast to equidimensional tunnels where the maximum subsidence is observed vertically above the centreline of the tunnel, the result from the present study shows shifting of the maximum subsidence away from the tunnel centreline. The maximum subsidence of 0.99 mm is observed at 4.54 m left to the escape tunnel centreline whereas the maximum subsidence of 3.14 mm is observed at 8.89 m right to the main tunnel centreline. This shifting clearly indicates the influence of undulating topography and inequidimensional noncircular tunnel. 展开更多

Numerical analysis is an effective tool to research the industrial Czochralski (CZ) crystal growth aiming to improve crystal quality and reduce manufactur- ing costs. In this study, a set of global simulations were carried out to investigate the effect of crystal-crucible rotation and pulling rate on melt convection and solid- liquid (SL) interface shape. Through analyses of the sim- ulation data, it is found that the interface deformation and inherent stress increase during the crystal growth process. The interface deflection increases from 7.4 to 51.3 mm with an increase in crystal size from 150 to 400 mm. In addition, the SL interface shape and flow pattern are sen- sitive to pulling rate and rotation rate. Reducing pulling rate can flat SL interface shape and add energy-consuming. Interface with low deflection can be achieved by adopting certain combination of crystal and crucible rotation rates. The effect of crystal rotation on SL interface shape is less significant at higher crucible rotation rates. 展开更多

The Westwood Mine aims to reuse the tailings storage facility #1(TSF #1) for solid waste storage, but, downstream of the Northwest dike is considered critical in terms of stability. This paper uses numerical modeling along with geophysical monitoring for assessing the Northwest dike stability during the restoration phase. The impact of waste rock deposition in the upstream TSF #1 is considered. The geophysical monitoring is based on electrical resistivity methods and was used to investigate the internal structure of the dike embankment in different deposition stages. The numerical simulations were performed with SLOPE/W code. The results show a factor of safety well above the minimum recommended value of 1.5. Geophysical monitoring revealed a vertical variation in the electrical resistivity across the dike, which indicates a multilayer structure of the embankment. Without any current in situ data, the geophysical monitoring helped estimating the nature of the materials used and the internal structure of the embankment. These interpretations were validated by geological observation of geotechnical log of the embankment. Based on this study, it is recommended that the water polishing pond be partly filled before waste rock is deposited in TSF #1. In addition, to ensure the stability of the dike, the piezometric head monitoring prior to and during waste rock deposition is recommended. 展开更多

When tunnels are constructed in coastal cities, they will inevitably undercross a river.Exploring the influence of rivers on tunnelling-induced deformation in costal soft soil is of great significance for controlling excessive settlement and protecting surrounding buildings. This paper presents a case study of twin tunnels undercrossing a river in soft soil in Hangzhou,China. The soft soil of Hangzhou refers to cohesive soil in a soft plastic or fluid plastic state with high natural water content, high compressibility, low bearing capacity, and low shear strength.Considering the influence of the river, the research region was divided into two parts, inside and outside the river-affected area, based on monitoring data of the Zizhi Tunnel. The development law of surface settlement is divided into three stages. In the first and second stages, the surface settlement within and outside the river-affected area showed a similar trend:the settlement increased and the growth rate of settlement in the second stage was smaller within the river-affected area.In the third stage, the surface settlement continued to increase within the river-affected area, while it converged outside the river-affected area.Within the river-affected area, there was an asynchronization of the sinking rate and stability of vault settlements and surface settlements.A numerical model was established by simulating different reinforcements of the tunnel. The numerical model revealed that the ground movement is influenced by the distribution and amount of the excess pore water pressure. The excess pore pressure was concentrated mostly in the range of 1.0Ht-3.0Ht(Ht is the tunnel height)before the tunnel face, especially within the river-affected area.Inside the river-affected area, the dissipation of excess pore water pressure needs more time, leading to slow stabilization of surface settlement. When undercrossing a river,a cofferdam is necessary to reduce excessive ground deformation by dispersing the distribution of excess pore water pressure. 展开更多

A dry-gas seal system is a non-contact seal technology that is widely used in different industrial applications.Spiral-groove dry-gas seal utilizes fluid dynamic pressure effects to realize the seal and lubrication processes, while forming a high pressure gas film between two sealing faces due to the deceleration of the gas pumped in or out. There is little research into the effects and the influence on seal performance,if the grooves and the gas film are at the micro-scale.This paper investigates the micro-scale effects on spiral-groove dry-gas seal performance in a numerical solution of a corrected Reynolds equation. The Reynolds equation is discretized by means of the finite difference method with the second order scheme and solved by the successive-over-relaxation(SOR) iterative method. The Knudsen number of the flow in the sealing gas film is changed from 0.005 to 0.120 with a variation of film depth and sealing pressure. The numerical results show that the average pressure in the gas film and the sealed gas leakage increase due to micro-scale effects. The open force is enlarged, while the gas film stiffness is significantly decreased due to micro-scale effects. The friction torque and power consumption remain constant, even in low sealing pressure and spin speed conditions. In this paper, the seal performance at different rotor face spin speeds is also described. The proposed research clarifies the micro-scale effects in a spiral-groove dry-gas seal and their influence on seal performance, which is expected to be useful for the improvement of the design of dry-gas seal systems operating in the slip flow regime. 展开更多

Matrix swelling effect will cause the change of microstructure of coal reservoir and its permeability, which is the key factor affecting the engineering effect of CO2-ECBM technology. The Sihe and Yuwu collieries are taken as research objects.Firstly, visualization reconstruction of coal reservoir is realized.Secondly, the evolution of the pore/fracture structures under different swelling contents is discussed. Then, the influence of matrix phase with different swelling contents on permeability is discussed. Finally, the mechanism of swelling effect during the CO2-ECBM process is further discussed. The results show that the intra-matrix pores and matrix-edge fractures are the focus of this study, and the contacting area between matrix and pore/fracture is the core area of matrix swelling. The number of matrix particles decreases with the increase of size, and the distribution of which is isolated with small size and interconnected with large size. The swelling effect of matrix particles with larger size has a great influence on the pore/fracture structures. The number of connected pores/fractures is limited and only interconnected in a certain direction. With the increase of matrix swelling content, the number, porosity, width, fractal dimension, surface area and volume of pores/fractures decrease, and their negative contribution to absolute permeability increases from 0.368% to 0.633% and 0.868%-1.404%,respectively.With the increase of swelling content, the number of intra-matrix pores gradually decreases and the pore radius becomes shorter during the CO2-ECBM process. The matrix continuously expands to the connected fractures, and the width of connected fractures gradually shorten.Under the influence of matrix swelling, the bending degree of fluid flow increases gradually,so the resistance of fluid migration increases and the permeability gradually decreases. This study shows that the matrix swelling effect is the key factor affecting CBM recovery, and the application of this effect in CO2-ECBM process can be discussed. 展开更多

A numerical case study on the seismic behavior of embankment was carried out based on a prototype of earth embankment in Yun-Gui Railway (from Kunming City to Nanning City) in southwest of China. A full-scale model of earth embankment was established by means of numerical simulation with FLAC3D code. The numerical results were verified by shaking table test. The seismic behaviors of earth embankment were studied, including the horizontal acceleration response, the vertical acceleration response, the dynamic displacement response, and the block state of earth embankment. Results show that the acceleration magnification near the embankment slope is larger than that in internal earth embankment body. With the increase of input peak acceleration, the horizontal acceleration magnification presents a decreasing trend. The horizontal acceleration response at the top of embankment is more sensitive to the intensity of ground motion than that at the bottom of cmbankment. The embankment presents an obvious nonlinear-plastic characteristic when the input horizontal peak acceleration is larger than 0.3 g. The maximum residual deformation occurs in the middle of embankment slope surface instead of at the top of embankment. The upper part of embankment experiences tension failure without shear failure, and area at mainly presents shear failure under the earthquake loading. surface of earth embankment. the bottom of embankment around the symmetry-axis of embankment The tension failure and shear failure repeatedly occur along the slope 展开更多

The Jianpudong No. 4 tunnel is a shallow tunnel, which belongs to Shaoshan County scenic highway in Hunan province, China and whose surrounding rock is weak. According to its characteristics, the field monitoring tests and numerical analysis were done. The mechanical characteristics of shallow tunnels under weak surrounding rock and the stress-strain rule of surrounding rock and support were analyzed. The numerical analysis results show that the settlement caused by upper bench excavating accounts for 44% of the total settlement, and the settlement caused by tunnel upper bench supporting accounts for 56% of the total settlement. The maximum axial force of shotcrete lining is 177.2 k N, which locates in hance under the secondary lining. The maximum moment of shotcrete lining is 5.08 k N·m, which locates in the arch foot. The stress curve of steel arch has three obvious stages during the tunnel construction. The maximum axial force of steel arch is 297.4 k N, which locates in tunnel vault. The axial forces of steel arch are respectively 23.5 k N and-21.8 k N, which is influenced by eccentric compression of shallow tunnel and locates in hance. The results show that there is larger earth pressure in tunnel vault which is most unfavorable position of steel arch. Therefore, the advance support should be strengthened in tunnel vault during construction process. 展开更多

The asthenosphere upwelled on a large scale in the western Pacific and South China Sea during the Cenozoic, which formed strong upward throughflow and caused the thermal structure to be changed obviously. The mathematical analysis has demonstrated that the upward throughflow velocity may have varied from 3×10^11 to 6×10^12 m/s. From the relationship between the lithospheric thickness and the conductive heat flux, the lithospheric heat flux in the western Pacific should be above 30 mW/m^2, which is consistent with the observed data. The huge low-speed zone within the upper mantle of the marginal sea in the western Pacific reflects that the upper mantle melts partially, flows regionally in the regional stress field, forms the upward heat flux at its bottom, and causes the change of the lithospheric thermal structure in the region. The numerical simulation result of the expansion and evolution in the South China Sea has demonstrated that in the early expansion, the upward throughflow velocity was relatively fast, and the effect that it had on the thickness of the lithosphere was relatively great, resulting in the mid-ocean basin expanding rapidly. After the formation of the ocean basin in the South China Sea, the upward throughflow velocity decreased, but the conductive heat flux was relatively high, which is close to the actual situation. Therefore, from the heat transfer point of view, this article discusses how the upward heat flux affects the lithospheric thermal structure in the western Pacific and South China Sea. The conclusions show that the upward heat throughflow at the bottom of the lithospheric mantle resulted in the tectonic deformation at the shallow crust. The intensive uplifts and rifts at the crust led to the continent cracks and the expansion in the South China Sea. 展开更多

As a further development of the authors' work (Huang and Qian, 1993), in this paper a new numerical method based on the time domain boundary element technique is proposed for solving fluid-solid coupling problems, in which a rigid body impacts normally on the calm surface of a half-space fluid. A fundamental solution to the half-space potential flow problem is first derived with the method of images. Then, an equivalent boundary integral equation in the Laplace transform domain is established by means of Green's second identity. Through the inverse Laplace transform and discretization in both time and boundary of the fluid region, the numerical calculation for the problem under consideration has been carried out. Several examples demonstrate that the present method is more efficient than existing ones, from which it is also seen that the shape of the impacting body has a considerable effect on the total impact force. 展开更多

An adjusting factor is introduced into the expression of arc pressure. The domain within which the arc heat flux is distributed non-symmetrically due to arc moving is selected appropriately, and three conditions for the domain to meet are described. The latent heat is taken into consideration by liquid fraction method. The dynamic development of weld pool geometry during TIG welding is analyzed numerically, and the effect of arc moving on the weld pool geometry is discussed. In the present study, we reconstructed upper airway and soft palate models of 3 obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome(OSAHS) patients with nasal obstruction. The airflow distribution and movement of the soft palate before and after surgery were described by a numerical simulation method. The curative effect of nasal surgery was evaluated for the three patients with OSAHS. The degree of nasal obstruction in the 3 patients was improved after surgery. For 2 patients with mild OSAHS, the upper airway resistance and soft palate displacement were reduced after surgery. These changes contributed to the mitigation of respiratory airflow limitation. For the patient with severe OSAHS, the upper airway resistance and soft palate displacement increased after surgery, which aggravated the airway obstruction. The effcacy of nasal surgery for patients with OSAHS is determined by the degree of improvement in nasal obstruction and whether the effects on the pharynx are beneficial. Numerical simulation results are consistent with the polysomnogram(PSG) test results, chief complaints, and clinical findings, and can indirectly reflect the degree of nasal patency and improvement of snoring symptoms, and further, provide a theoretical basis to solve relevant clinical problems. 展开更多

In order to reduce economic and life losses due to terrorism or accidental explosion threats, reinforced concrete (RC) slabs of buildings need to he designed or retrofitted to resist blast loading. In this paper the dynamic behavior of RC slabs under blast loading and its influencing factors are studied. The numerical model of an RC slab subjected to blast loading is established using the explicit dynamic analysis software. Both the strain rate effect and the damage accumulation are taken into account in the material model. The dynamic responses of the RC slab subjected to blast loading are analyzed, and the influence of concrete strength, thickness and reinforcement ratio on the behavior of the RC slab under blast loading is numerically investigated. Based on the numerical results, some principles for blast-resistant design and retrofitting are proposed to improve the behavior of the RC slab subjected to blast loading. 展开更多

To unveil the characteristics and available propagation mechanism of coaxial-type microwave excited line-shape plasma, the effects of parameters including microwave power, working pressure, dielectric constant, and external magnetic field on the plasma distribution were numerically investigated by solving a coupled system of Maxwell's equations and continuity equations. Numerical results indicate that high microwave power, relatively high working pressure, low dielectric constant, and shaped magnetic field profiles will help produce a high-density and uniform plasma source. Exciting both ends by microwave contributed to the high-density and uni- form plasma source as well. Possible mechanisms were analyzed by using the polarization model of low temperature plasma. The generation and propagation processes of the line-shape plasma mainly depend on the interaction of three aspects, i.e. the transmitted part, penetration part and absorptive part of the electromagnetic field. The numerical results were qualitatively consistent with available experimental results from literature. More elaborate descriptions of the three aspects and corresponding interactions among them need to be investigated further to improve the properties of the line-shape plasma. 展开更多

The numerical simulation model for predicting fast filling process of 70 MPa type Ⅲ(with metal liner) hydrogen vehicle cylinder was presented, which has considered turbulence, real gas effect and solid heat transfer issues.Through the numerical analysis method, the temperature distributions of the gas within the solid walls were revealed; adiabatic filling was studied to evaluate the heat dissipation during the filling; the influences of various filling conditions on temperature rise were analyzed in detail. Finally, cold filling was proposed to evaluate the effect on temperature rise and SoC(state of charge) within the cylinder. The hydrogen pre-cooling was proved to be an effective solution to reduce maximum temperature and acquire higher SoC during the filling process. 展开更多
