Good mental well-being is necessary for achievement in science at any level.There are extrinsic factors that have the potential to determine a learner’s mental well-being,and the role of the parent(s)cannot be undermined.Therefore,this study examined the relationships between parental engagement(PE),parents’attitude to science(PAS),and mental well-being(MWb)among junior science students.This descriptive survey involved a population of Junior Secondary Three(3)students studying Basic Science in public co-educational schools.A sample of three hundred(300)respondents was randomly drawn from 10 schools within the metropolis.Quantitative data were sourced using three validated questionnaires and analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics.The research showed that PE(2.19)and PAS(2.13)are relatively high,while MWb(2.51)is moderately normal.The influence of PE and PAS on MWb is significant.Both PE and PAS have a significant positive relationship with MWb.Also,PE and PAS were found to jointly contribute to students’MWb.In conclusion,PE and PAS have implications for the child’s mental well-being and ultimate success in science.We,therefore,recommend that more parental engagement be encouraged by improving sensitization,and orientation programs could be organized for parents of science students.This may provide an avenue for parents to be better equipped to support their young scientists. 展开更多

This study is aimed to develop the interdisciplinary SoSTI (science of sound in traditional Thai musical instruments) course for Thai non-science upper secondary school students to study the students' attitudes toward science before and after studying from the course. The SoSTI course development is based on the interdisciplinary concept model and constructivist theory. The research study is divided into five phases: (1) pre-developing the course, (2) developing the course, (3) conducting the pilot study, (4) implementing and evaluating, and (5) analyzing data and writing the conclusion, respectively. The SoSTI course is an elective course corresponding to the Basic Education Core Curriculum B.E. 2551 (A.D. 2008). This course was conducted with 35 12th-grade non-science students in the second semester of the 2010 academic year at a school in Bangkok, Thailand, for a whole semester. The research instruments were students' attitude toward science questionnaire, and students' opinions toward the SoSTI course questionnaire. The results of this study presented that, after completing the SoSTI course, the students' attitudes toward science comparing before and after studying the SoSTI course were not significantly different at the .05 level. The use of multimedia in education has proven its importance due to its positive impact on the teaching and learning process. The present study investigates comparative effectiveness of multimedia-aided teaching (MAT) on students' academic achievement and attitude at elementary level in teaching of science. A sample of 60 students was randomly divided into two groups. Pretest-posttest control group design was selected for this study. The experimental group was taught with the help of multimedia presentations whereas the control group was treated traditionally. The treatment was given for a period of 20 weeks. The valid and reliable questionnaires were used as data collection tools. An Attitude Towards Science Scale (ATSS) was used to measure the attitude of both groups before and after treatment. The independent sample t-test was used to analyze the data. The results indicated that MAT is more effective than the traditional one. Students' attitude towards science improves more if MAT method is used as compared to the traditional method of teaching. 展开更多

A number of events in China in recent years have been characterized by tensions or controversies between scientists and the public, such as the p-Xylene chemical project in Xiamen, nuclear energy projects, and genetic engineering. Scientists tend to attribute such conflict to inadequate public knowledge of science, leading to misunderstandings about it. However, that view ignores the influence on public perceptions of news reports and online discussions about controversial technologies in new media. Social media reporting affects the audience's perception of the risks posed by controversial technologies and can cause people to lose confidence in the scientific community and damage their trust in government. Thus, the public opposes these technologies. In this context, this study explores the relationship between the public's trust in the scientific community and the government on the one hand and its attitude towards controversial technologies on the other. I surveyed 1,235 people using a national online probability sampling strategy. I found that people's use of new media was significantly related to the extent of their knowledge of specific controversial technologies and was associated with other people's opinions about those technologies. The more attention people paid to We Chat coverage of genetically modified organisms(GMOs), the more supportive they were of them. Thus, the public's use of new media is a key factor in predicting its positive attitude to GMOs. Scientific literacy also significantly affects public attitudes to GMOs, directly as well as indirectly. 展开更多
