Dear Editor,This letter introduces a novel Koopman-based equivalent-inputdisturbance(EID)approach to enhance tremor suppression performance.Since the first-order linear model used in the conventional EID approach cannot accurately describe the wrist-exoskeleton system,we propose a Koopman modeling framework to construct a high-precision linear model.Furthermore,we incorporate an additional gain parameter into the EID estimator to improve the tremor suppression performance.Simulation results demonstrate the superiority of our approach. 展开更多

With the increasing depth and intensity of coal mining operations,high-energy mine tremors have become a major trigger for rockburst disasters, posing severe threats to mine safety.Conventional rockburst risk assessment methods either lack real-time adaptability or rely heavily on qualitative microseismic data analysis, limiting their effectiveness in dynamic early warning. To address these limitations, this study proposed a predictive framework for rockburst risk assessment by integrating ensemble learning algorithms with Bayesian optimization.A dataset was constructed using a sliding time window approach, linking the highest MS energy in the subsequent days with predefined risk levels. Both undersampling and oversampling strategies were employed to mitigate class imbalance, and their performance was evaluated.Three ensemble models,i.e.CatBoost,Random Forest, and LightGBM,were developed, and their hyperparameters were optimized using Bayesian techniques to enhance predictive performance. The models were validated using MS data from the 6303 and 6306 working faces at the Dongtan Coal Mine. All three ensemble models outperformed conventional classification methods, particularly in accurately predicting high-risk categories.Among them, the CatBoost model exhibited the best performance, with an accuracy of 89.47%and an F1¯-score of 90.62%.Furthermore,SHapley Additive exPlanations analysis was used to enhance model interpretability, identifying key MS indicators influencing rockburst risk predictions. This study provides a systematic approach for leveraging MS data and machine learning to improve an early warning system for rockburst hazards, offering valuable insights for underground mining safety management. 展开更多

Tremor is an involuntary and oscillatory movement disorder that makes daily activities difficult for affected patients. Hand tremor-suppression orthoses are noninvasive, wearable devices designed to mitigate tremors. Various studies have shown that these devices are effective, economical, and safe;however, they have drawbacks such as large weight, awkward shape, and rigid parts. This study investigates different types of tremor-suppression orthoses and discusses their efficiency, mechanism, benefits, and disadvantages. First, various orthoses(with passive, semi-active, and active mechanisms) are described in detail.Next, we look at how additive manufacturing(AM) has progressed recently in making sensors and actuators for application in tremor orthoses. Then, the materials used in AM are further analyzed. It is found that traditional manufacturing problems can be solved with the help of AM techniques, like making orthoses that are affordable, lighter, and more customizable. Another concept being discussed is using smart materials and AM methods, such as four-dimensional(4D) printing, to make orthoses that are more comfortable and efficient. 展开更多

Deep brain stimulation of the subthalamic nucleus is recognized as the most effective treatment for moderate and advanced Parkinson's disease. Programming of the stimulation parameters is important for maintaining the efficacy of deep brain stimulation. Voltage is consid- ered to be the most effective programming parameter. The present study is a retrospective analysis of six patients with Parkinson's disease (four men and two women, aged 37-65 years), who underwent bilateral deep brain stimulation of the subthalamic nucleus at the First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University, China, and who subsequently adjusted only the stimulation voltage. We evaluated motor symptom severity using the Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale Part III, symptom progression using the Hoehn and Yahr scale, and the levodopa equivalent daily dose, before surgery and 1 and 2 years after surgery. The 2-year follow-up results show that rigidity and tremor improved, and clinical symptoms were reduced, while pulse width was maintained at 60 ps and frequency at 130 Hz. Voltage adjust- ment alone is particularly suitable for patients who cannot tolerate multiparameter program adjustment. Levodopa equivalent daily dose was markedly reduced 1 and 2 years after surgery compared with baseline. Our results confirm that rigidity, tremor and bradykinesia can be best alleviated by voltage adjustment. The trial was registered at ClinicalTrials.gov (identifier: NCT01934881). 展开更多

Our purpose is to report alterations in contrast sensitivity function(CSF)and in the magno, parvo and koniocellular visual pathways by means of a multichannel perimeter in case of an essential tremor(ET).A complete evaluation of the visual function was performed in a 69-year old patient, including the analysis of the chromatic discrimination by the Fansworth–Munsell 100 hue test, the measurement of the CSF by the CSV-1000E test, and the detection of potential alteration patterns in the magno, parvo and koniocellular visual pathways by means of a multichannel perimeter.Visual acuity and intraocular pressure(IOP)were within the ranges of normality in both eyes.No abnormalities were detected in the fundoscopic examination and in the optical coherence tomography(OCT)exam. The results of the color vision examination were also within the ranges of normality.A signi¯cant decrease in the achromatic CSFs for right eye(RE)and left eye(LE)was detected for all spatial frequencies. The statistical global values provided by the multichannel perimeter confirms that there were significant absolute sensitivity losses compared to the normal pattern in RE.In the LE,only a statistically significant decrease in sensitivity was detected for the blue-yellow(BY)channel.The pattern standard deviation(PSD)values obtained in our patient indicated that there were significant localized losses compared to the normality pattern in the achromatic channel of the RE and in the red-green(RG)channel of the LE.Some color vision alterations may be present in ET that cannot be detected with conventional color vision tests, such as the FM 100 Hue. 展开更多

Based on the development of the performance of magnetorheological damper, the tremor suppression strategy that uses angle displacement sensor and force sensor to sense the information of the tremor and uses the fuzzy neural network as the control algorithm is presented. The information of the maximum tremor torque can be achieved exactly by means fusing the data of displacement sensor and the data of force sensor. Due to the slow change of the maximum tremor torque, the fuzzy neural network with single input variable and single output variable is adopted as the control algorithm, and the mathematic model of fuzzy neural network is worked out. The elbow tremor suppression model is established to provide tremor information for fuzzy neural network training and tremor suppression strategy simulation, then the off-line fuzzy neural network training is finished with the selected training data set,and the tremor suppression strategy is simulated. Simulation results show that the tremor suppression strategy has presented is effectually for the tremor suppression. 展开更多

Tremor occurs in about half of multiple sclerosis(MS)patients.MS tremor has a broad frequency range of 2.5-7 Hz,with a higher prevalence of postural tremor(44%)compared to intentional tremor(6%)(Alusi et al.,2001).Tremor may affect the upper and lower extremities, head, and trunk, and may even affect the vocal cords in isolated cases of palatal tremor.MS tremor is classically attributed to lesions of the brain stem, cerebellum,or cerebellar peduncles, and tremor intensity has been shown to correlate with the number of lesions or their functional connections. However, recent work has demonstrated that inflammatory damage to the cerebello-thalamic and cortico-thalamic pathways might also play an important role in causing tremor,as it co-occurs with other signs and symptoms of MS such as dysarthria, dysmetria, dysdiadochokinesia, and dystonia(Alusi et al.,2001). 展开更多

The dentatorubrothalamic tract(DRTT) is reported to be involved in the control of movement. Therefore, injury of the DRTT can be accompanied by abnormal movements, including ataxia, tremor, or dystonia. We investigated DRTT injuries in 27 patients who showed post-traumatic tremor in at least one of four extremities following mild traumatic brain injury. We classified DRTT injuries based on diffusion tensor tractography parameters and configuration: type A: the DRTT showed narrowing, type B: the DRTT showed partial tearing, and type C: the DRTT showed discontinuation. Fractional anisotropy and fiber number of the DRTT were significantly decreased in patients compared with the healthy controls. Based on our DRTT injury classification, among the 54 hemispheres of the 27 patients, type A injury occurred in 22 hemispheres(40.7%) of 17 patients, type B injury was present in 15 hemispheres(27.7%) of 10 patients, and type C injury was observed in 8 hemispheres(14.8%) of 6 patients. Our results suggest that diffusion tensor tractography-based evaluation of the DRTT would be useful when determining cause of post-traumatic tremor in patients with mild traumatic brain injury. The study protocol was approved by the Institutional Review Board of Yeungnam University Hospital(YUMC-2018-09-007) on September 5, 2018. 展开更多

Essential tremor, also referred to as familial tremor, is an autosomal dominant genetic disease and the most common movement disorder. It typically involves a postural and motor tremor of the hands, head or other part of the body. Essential tremor is driven by a central oscillation signal in the brain. However, the corticospinal mechanisms involved in the generation of essential tremor are unclear. Therefore, in this study, we used a neural computational model that includes both monosynaptic and multisynaptic corticospinal pathways interacting with a propriospinal neuronal network. A virtual arm model is driven by the central oscillation signal to simulate tremor activity behavior. Cortical descending commands are classified as alpha or gamma through monosynaptic or multisynaptic corticospinal pathways, which converge respectively on alpha or gamma motoneurons in the spinal cord. Several scenarios are evaluated based on the central oscillation signal passing down to the spinal motoneurons via each descending pathway. The simulated behaviors are compared with clinical essential tremor characteristics to identify the corticospinal pathways responsible for transmitting the central oscillation signal. A propriospinal neuron with strong cortical inhibition performs a gating function in the generation of essential tremor. Our results indicate that the propriospinal neuronal network is essential for relaying the central oscillation signal and the production of essential tremor. 展开更多

Parkinson’s disease(PD)is a very common neurodegenerative disease that occurs mostly in the elderly. There are many main clinical manifestations of PD,such as tremor, bradykinesia, muscle rigidity, etc.Based on the current research on PD,the accurate and convenient detection of early symptoms is the key to detect PD.With the development of microelectronic and sensor technology,it is much easier to measure the barely noticeable tremor in just one hand for the early detection of Parkinson’s disease. In this paper,we present a smart wearable device for detecting hand tremor,in which MPU6050(MIDI Processing Unit)consisting of a 3-axis gyroscope and a 3-axis accelerometer is used to collect acceleration and angular velocity of fingers.By analyzing the time of specific finger movements,we successfully recognized the tremor signals with high accuracy.Meanwhile, with Bluetooth 4.0(Bluetooth Low Energy,BLE)and networking terminal ability, tremor data can be transferred to a monitoring device in real time with extremely lowenergy consumption. The experimental results have shown that the proposed device(smart ring)is convenient for long-term tremor detection which is vital for early detection and treatment for Parkinson’s disease. 展开更多

Similar to coal, rock and gas ejections, rock mass tremors and rock bursts are among the most serious natural hazards accompanying the underground extraction of coal. Gas-dynamic phenomena caused by rock mass tremors and rock bursts observed as transient states of air parameters in mining headings, are usually generated as a result of a change in the geometry of headings and the release of considerable amounts of gases. Particular significance is attributed to transient states caused by disasters, which are often accompanied by rapid incidents, presenting threats to the life and health of the underground crew.In Polish mining there are known examples of transient states of air parameters recorded during gasdynamic phenomena, e.g. tremors and rock bursts. The paper presents the case studies of rapid seismic incidents to show how records in mine monitoring systems broaden the knowledge about the transient states of air parameters in mining headings generated because of them. 展开更多

NGLY1 Deficiency is an autosomal recessive congenital disorder that has been identified in less than 100 individuals. Most individuals with NGLY1 Deficiency display hyperkinetic movement disorders, including choreiform, athetoid, dystonic myoclonic, dyskinetic, and dysmetric movements. Developing a consistent and concise consensus on the classification and evaluation of tremors is essential to forward the research and treatment of tremors. It has also been reported that some individuals with NGLY1 Deficiency demonstrate tremor, but such tremor has never been formally investigated. The primary objective of this study is to determine if an individual with NGLY1 Deficiency demonstrates an identifiable tremor during a series of arm movements and, if so, describe the frequency and power characteristics of that tremor. Arm movement kinematics were obtained using a 16-camera Vicon system, and time series trajectory waveforms for three planes of a marker placed on the hand were developed. Custom MATLAB scripts were utilized to compute Fast Fourier Transformations of the data within the identified waveform segments. A mean frequency of 2.30 Hz (SD = 1.05) with a mean power of 5.02 |P1(f)| (SD = 4.63) suggests that our participant’s kinematic data did display a persistent tremor in both hands across all tasks and movement planes. Analyses of the reaching hand and the non-reaching hand suggest the participant displayed an action tremor in both postural and intention (kinetic) tremors. Future directions should include assessing additional individuals with NGLY1 Deficiency to determine if the tremor is a distinguishable disorder behavior. Additionally, evaluating other anatomical sites, such as the elbow, head, and lower limbs, would provide further insights into the characteristics of this tremor. 展开更多
