Four field trials were conducted at Exeter and Ridgetown, ON, Canada in 2019 and 2020 to determine the tolerance of azuki, kidney, small red and white beans to glyphosate (1800 g·ae·ha-1) + tribenuron (15 g·ai·ha-1), glyphosate (1800 g·ae·ha-1) + carfentrazone (35 g·ai·ha-1) and glyphosate (1800 g·ae·ha-1) + tribenuron (15 g·ai·ha-1) + carfentrazone (35 g·ai·ha-1) applied PP 1 - 2 days prior to seeding dry beans. Glyphosate + tribenuron, glyphosate + carfentrazone, and glyphosate + tribenuron + carfentrazone, applied PP, caused 5%, 5% and 9% bean injury at 1 WAE;7%, 6% and 10% bean injury at 2 WAE and 6%, 5% and 8% bean injury at 4 WAE, respectively. At 8 WAE, there was 0, 1% and 4% injury in azuki bean;1%, 2% and 2% injury in kidney bean;3%, 2% and 3% injury in small red bean;and 6%, 3% and 2% injury in white bean with glyphosate + tribenuron, glyphosate + carfentrazone, and glyphosate + tribenuron + carfentrazone applied PP, respectively. The injury was significantly greater with glyphosate + tribenuron in small red and white beans compared to the azuki and kidney beans. There was no difference between injury levels among market classes of dry been with glyphosate + carfentrazone or glyphosate + tribenuron + carfentrazone applied PP. There was no effect of glyphosate + tribenuron, glyphosate + carfentrazone and glyphosate + tribenuron + carfentrazone on dry bean plant stand, maturity and seed yield. However, dry bean biomass was reduced as much as 15% with glyphosate + tribenuron and 13% with glyphosate + tribenuron + carfentrazone compared to the untreated control. Dry bean height was reduced 4% with glyphosate + tribenuron + carfentrazone but was not affected with other treatments. Based on these results, there is potential for using glyphosate plus tribenuron or carfentrazone for preplant weed management in dry bean production.展开更多

Four field studies were conducted over two years (2014, 2015) to examine the tolerance of four market classes of dry beans to sulfentrazone (210 and 420 g·ai·ha-1) and pyroxasulfone (100 and 200 g·ai·ha-1) applied alone and in combination. The registration of these two herbicides would provide Ontario dry bean producers with two additional modes of action for broadleaf weed control. Pyroxasulfone caused up to 23%, 6%, 7% and 10% injury in adzuki, kidney, small red Mexican and white bean, respectively;sulfentrazone caused up to 51%, 12%, 15% and 44% injury and the combination caused up to 90%, 23%, 29% and 62% injury, respectively. Kidney and small red Mexican bean density, height, seed moisture content and yield were not affected. Pyroxasulfone (200 g·ai·ha-1) + sulfentrazone (420 g·ai·ha-1) reduced adzuki and white bean density, shoot dry weight, height and yield. This study concludes that pyroxasulfone (100 g·ai·ha-1) + sulfentrazone (210 g·ai·ha-1) applied PRE can be safely used to control weeds in Ontario kidney and small red Mexican bean production.展开更多

Sulfentrazone is a PPO inhibitor herbicide that has activity on some annual grass and broadleaf weed species. Four field trials were conducted over two years (2014, 2015) to determine the tolerance of four commonly grown dry bean market classes (adzuki, kidney, small red Mexican and white bean) to PRE applications of sulfentrazone at 140, 210, 280 and 420 g·ai·ha-1. Crop injury, plant height, plant density, shoot biomass, seed moisture content and yield were examined. Sulfentrazone (420 g·ai·ha-1) caused up to 74%, 22%, 30%, and 57% injury in adzuki, kidney, small red Mexican and white bean, respectively. Plant density, height and yield were not reduced for kidney or small red Mexican bean. Sulfentrazone (420 g·ai·ha-1) reduced white bean plant density, height and yield by 28%, 29% and 29%, respectively;and reduced adzuki bean plant density, height and yield by 51%, 34% and 57%, respectively. Overall, kidney and small red Mexican bean were the most tolerant to sulfentrazone, followed by white bean, and then adzuki. This study determined sulfentrazone applied PRE is safe for Ontario kidney bean and small red Mexican bean crops.展开更多

However, their industrial production and use in agriculture have a negative impact on the environment and consequently on human health. While chemical fertilizers may not have to be abandoned in agricultural production systems, limiting their use could help to make agriculture sustainable and resilient to climate change. In Senegal, the level of mineral fertilizers used in market gardening has become alarming in the Niayes area. As a result, microbial biotechnologies have been promoted for biofertilizer production of common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) cultivation. Rhizobial inoculums have thus been used to reduce the rate of chemical nitrogen fertilizers being applied in cropping systems. Several investigations in the laboratory, on experimental stations and in the field have shown a possibility of a significant reduction in the use of nitrogen fertilizers in common bean production. Conventional mineral fertilization use can be reduced from over 120 kg N/ha to 20 kg N/ha. This contributes both to a very significant reduction in the application rate with the same level of yield and to an improvement in the standard of living. In addition, the environmental impact of using chemical fertilizers can be mitigated. This study is a contribution to the promotion of biofertilizers adoption in agricultural systems.展开更多

Apart from this production performance, the quality of the beans, which are mainly exported to the major chocolate-making countries, presents a quality problem to the point of suffering a discount on the international market. One of these quality problems is the content of ochratoxin A, a mycotoxin produced by fungi. Finally, to verify the level of contamination in beans produced in Côte d’Ivoire, a study was carried out. It consisted of collecting information on fermentation and drying times (The two major post-harvest operations) and collecting beans, which were analyzed by electrophoresis using the High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) method. The results obtained show ochratoxin A contents of between 0.05 µg/kg and 0.17 µg/kg. The general level of contamination is therefore very low and below the tolerable limit which is 2 µg/kg. In addition, the correlative study between the fermentation and drying times of the beans revealed no significant influence (p < 0.01) of the duration of these operations on the level of ochratoxin A contamination. Major contamination can occur after post-harvest activities carried out by producers. This is certainly due to the development of fungi responsible for the production of ochratoxin A during the period of storage and marketing of cocoa beans in conditions of high humidity in storage enclosures. Producers need to be made more aware of the need to ensure that cocoa beans are properly dried and stored in dry areas to avoid moisture build-up, which is a source of mould growth and ochratoxin A production.展开更多

摘要In faba bean(Vicia faba L.),growth habit determines plant architecture and significantly influences flowering, podding patterns, and maturity.A recently identified semi-determinate germplasm exhibits favorable traits for mechanized harvesting and high yield potential, making it useful for developing a semi-dwarf faba bean ideotype with a high harvest index. To uncover the genetic basis of the semideterminate growth habit,we investigated developmental differences in the shoot apical meristems(SAMs)of four faba bean germplasms with distinct growth habits using scanning electron microscopy. The phenotypic differences among these germplasms were attributed to variations in the duration of the overlap periods between vegetative and reproductive growth.Through bulked-segregant analysis(BSA)combined with linkage mapping in an F2 population and a recombinant inbred line(RIL)population derived from Qingcan 17(indeterminate)×RF25(semi-determinate),we identified two quantitative trait loci(QTL):one located within a 3.73-Mb region on chromosome 5(VfSdt1)and the other within an 8.68-Mb region on chromosome 1L(VfSdt2).We selected Terminal flower 1(VfTFL1)as the candidate gene for VfSdt1,as a functional single nucleotide polymorphism(T-to-G)in this gene was found to be responsible for terminal inflorescence formation.VfTFL1 expression is downregulated before the SAM transitions into an inflorescence meristem and the subsequent termination of differentiation.VfFD was identified as the candidate gene for VfSdt2,as it harbors two nonsynonymous polymorphisms within its coding sequence that are associated with variation in growth habit.VfFD is specifically expressed in the shoot apex. These polymorphisms may promote vegetative growth of the SAM in the sdt1/sdt1 genetic background, resulting in a semi-determinate phenotype. These findings offer valuable insights for molecular design breeding aimed at developing semi-dwarf faba bean varieties.

摘要Common bean(Phaseolus vulgaris L.)is a vital source of protein and essential nutrients for human consumption and plays a key role in sustainable agriculture due to its nitrogen-fixing ability(Nadeem et al.,2021).Kidney beans,a subcategory of dry common beans, are highly valued for their rich protein, dietary fiber, low fat content, and various trace elements(Garcia-Cordero et al.,2021).Despite the release of several de novo genome assemblies(Goodstein et al.,2012;Schmutz et al.,2014;Vlasova et al.,2016;Cortinovis et al.,2024),existing common bean genomes remain incomplete, particularly in complex regions such as centromeres and telomeres, limiting a comprehensive understanding of the genomic landscape.

摘要Encapsulation and protection of hesperidin(HES)in mung bean protein isolate(MPI)-dextran(DX)conjugatestabilized nanoemulsions(MDC NEs)were investigated in this study. The degree of grafting of MDC prepared by a dry-heating method reached 39.70%±0.01% under the optimal conditions of MPI/DX mass ratio 1:2.3,reaction temperature 58.8℃,and reaction time 4 d.Moreover, the analyses of Fourier infrared spectroscopy, intrinsic fluorescence spectroscopy, surface hydrophobicity, and thermal stability further confirmed the covalent grafting of dextran onto MPI molecules. When encapsulated in MDC NEs at 80 MPa for three times by highpressure homogenization, the encapsulation efficiency and loading capacity of HES were 63.62%±0.01%and 0.40±0.00 g/g,respectively.The encapsulated HES exhibited higher antioxidant activity and stronger light and storage stability than the free HES.Additionally, the incorporation of HES inhibited the formation of lipid peroxides in the nanoemulsions. The findings suggest that glycosylation combined with high-pressure homogenization is an effective strategy for enhancing the stability of MPI-based emulsions and improving their encapsulation of HES.This study provides a promising approach for the development of innovative food and beverage products based on MPI emulsions or new materials for encapsulating fat-soluble bioactive compounds.
摘要Coffee is one of the most popular beverages worldwide, and its consumption continues to rise.Coffee beans can be sold as roasted coffee or as green beans. The high temperatures used during roasting can produce various toxic compounds, particularly polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(PAHs).The aim of this systematic review was to examine the presence and concentration of PAHs in coffee as well as the methods used for sample preparation and analysis.Relevant research literature was searched from databases such as PubMed,Science Direct,Web of Science, and Scopus. The analysis of the extracted data covered PAH types, risk assessment, sample preparation, and analytical methods. The study found significant variability in PAH levels in coffee, influenced by factors such as roasting techniques, origin of coffee, and analytical methods. This underscores the urgent need for standardized analytical protocols to assess PAH in roasted coffee.Furthermore, minimizing the temperature during roasting is a prominent strategy for reducing PAH in coffee.
摘要Limited information is available on the sensitivity of dry beans to tribenuron and carfentrazone applied preplant (PP). Based on these results, there is potential for using glyphosate plus tribenuron or carfentrazone for preplant weed management in dry bean production.

摘要Ozone(O3)pollution has elevated in China, threatening plants and crop production.Ethylenediurea(EDU)is a chemical alleviating O3-induced phytotoxicities. This study aimed at revealing fluctuating O3 exposures effects on Youxian No 3(Phaseolus vulgaris)and Sukui No 4(Vigna angularis),two widely grown Chinese bean cultivars, and EDU role in mediating these effects.Plants were periodically treated with EDU(400 mg/L)or water and subjected to charcoal-filtered air(CF)or non-filtered ambient air enriched with an additional targeted O3 concentration of 40 ppb(NF40).with subsequent ambient or NF40 exposures.A 10-day exposure to NF40 increased photosynthetic rate(A)while decreasing the leaf intercellular CO2 concentration(Ci),but this effect was absent after moving plants to ambient air for two weeks.Moving previously CF-exposed plants to ambient air for two weeks also increased A,which was not linked with Ci but more related to stomatal conductance(gs).Following two one-week and two-week sequential exposures of all plants to NF40,with an intermediate exposure to ambient air, elevated O3 reduced chlorophylls(SPAD),A,gs,Ci,and transpiration and decoupled A-gs response.More O3 effectswere observed in plants treatedwithNF40 during each O3-treatment cycle, compared to those exposed to CF during the first cycle. The former plants exhibited significantly decreased biomass and water content of leaves and stems but increased flowers biomass and water content. Some of the effects were cultivardependent, with Youxian showing more apparent trade-offs between vegetative growth and reproduction.EDU alleviated various negative O3 effects.
摘要Only one herbicide mode of action (ALS inhibitor) is currently available to Ontario dry bean producers for soil-applied broadleaf weed control. This study concludes that pyroxasulfone (100 g·ai·ha-1) + sulfentrazone (210 g·ai·ha-1) applied PRE can be safely used to control weeds in Ontario kidney and small red Mexican bean production.

摘要The objective of the research was to examine the chemical composition, antioxidant activity, and sensory profile of espresso-based Arabica coffee from different bean origins.Coffee beans from three origins(Arabica Gayo(G3 and P88 clones)-Aceh,Java Preanger(P88 and Lini S clones)-West Java, and Toraja(Lini S clone)-South Sulawesi)were roasted at a medium to dark level. The roasted beans were subsequently brewed using four different espresso-based methods:espresso, cappuccino, palm sugar milk coffee, and latte. The coffee brews were analyzed for caffeoylquinic acids(CQAs),alkaloid, antioxidant activity, sugar, fat, and sensory profiles. Results indicated that coffee bean origins and brewing methods considerably affected alkaloid content(caffeine, trigonelline, and theobromine)and antioxidant activity(2.2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl(DPPH),and ferric reducing antioxidant power(FRAP)).Meanwhile,CQAs,sugar, and fat were only affected by brewing methods.Additionally, bioactive compounds showed a positive correlation with antioxidant activities, while sugar and fat content decreased the antioxidant activity of espresso-based coffee brews.Check-all-that-apply(CATA)analysis revealed that espresso showed a bitter and astringent aftertaste;cappuccino and latte had a milky taste;and palm sugar milk coffee had a sweet taste and caramel aroma. This study indicates the maximum daily consumption of espresso-based coffee based on caffeine content is four cups of espresso(18 mL),two cups of palm sugar milk coffee(150 mL),two cups of cappuccino(220 mL),and four cups of latte(220 mL).

摘要[Objectives]This study was conducted to quickly qualitatively and quantitatively analyze the residues of 10 plant growth regulators(PGRs)in bean sprouts.[Methods]Using bean sprouts as the test material,a high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry(HPLC-MS/MS)method was established to determine the residual levels of 10 PGRs in bean sprouts.[Results]Under optimized conditions, the retention time of the 10 PGRs ranged from 6.45 to 11.43 min. When the mass concentration ranged from 0.005 to 0.05μg/ml,all PGRs exhibited good linearity, with correlation coefficients(r)≥0.9991.The limits of detection(LODs,S/N=3)were in the range of 0.30-0.92μg/kg,and the limits of quantification(LOQs)were in the range of 0.50-2.10μg/kg.The average recovery values at three concentration levels ranged from 80%to 105.8%,with relative standard deviations(RSD s,n=6)of 2.8%-7.5%.[Conclusions]This method is simple and accurate, and provides technical reference for food safety monitoring.
摘要Ontario dry bean growers are currently limited to ALS inhibitor herbicides for soilapplied broadleaf weed control;therefore another mode of action is needed. This study determined sulfentrazone applied PRE is safe for Ontario kidney bean and small red Mexican bean crops.

摘要Because its long, tender pods supply essential proteins, vitamins, and fibers to humans, yardlong bean(Vigna unguiculata ssp.sesquipedalis)is a commonly consumed vegetable, especially in Southeast Asia.To provide insights into the genetic bases of key agricultural traits in yardlong bean,we here created a high-density bin-map with 2084 bin markers using 514227 SNPs from a recombinant-inbred line(RIL)population.Quantitative trait loci(QTL)mapping was carried out to identify loci associated with anthocyanin content(ANT),vitamin E content(VE),total soluble protein content(TSP),pod length(PL),hundred-seed weight(HSW),seed length and width(SL and SW,respectively),and seed coat color(SCC).In total,20 related QTLs were isolated, explaining 7.58-56.03%of the phenotypic variation.Of these, five major QTLs(qANT5,qTSP11,qVE7,qPL3,and qSCC9)were detected in 2020,2021,and the combined environment, explaining 11.96-56.03%of the phenotypic variation.VuANT1 was identified as a causal gene for the QTL qANT5,which regulated anthocyanin content;VuANT1 was highly expressed in immature purple pods but barely detectable in white pods.VuANT1 overexpression in tobacco leaves and yardlong bean hairy roots resulted in purple coloration as a result of anthocyanin accumulation. These findings suggested that VuANT1 was a key regulator of anthocyanin accumulation in yardlong bean. Our results lay a firm foundation for target agricultural trait improvement and clarification of the genetic mechanisms underlying agricultural traits in yardlong bean.
摘要Synthetic fertilizers are widely used to address the urgent challenge of ensuring food supplies for a growing world population in the context of climate change. This study is a contribution to the promotion of biofertilizers adoption in agricultural systems.
摘要Côte d’Ivoire has been the world’s leading producer of cocoa beans for several decades. Producers need to be made more aware of the need to ensure that cocoa beans are properly dried and stored in dry areas to avoid moisture build-up, which is a source of mould growth and ochratoxin A production.

摘要Staygreen syndrome or Zhengqing in soybean has recently become a major issue for Chinese growers in the Huang-Huai-Hai river basin.Although previous studies revealed that staygreen can be induced when pods/seeds are damaged, it is unknown whether virus infection or insect infestation causes staygreen. To determine whether viral infection causes staygreen, a survey of soybean staygreen incidence in the Huang-Huai-Hai river basin was conducted in 2016 and 2017.Diseased samples were collected and analyzed using DAS-ELISA for Soybean mosaic virus, Watermelon mosaic virus, Bean pod mottle virus, Cucumber mosaic virus, and Bean common mosaic virus. The survey showed that the severity of soybean staygreen syndrome was most prevalent in Beijing, Henan, Shaanxi, and some parts of Shandong provinces, with yield losses from 0 to nearly 100%, but only a small fraction of samples were positive for the tested viruses.A field cage experiment and an insecticide treatment field trial were conducted to determine the contribution of the bean bug, Riptortus pedestris, to staygreen incidence. The field cage experiment showed that R.pedestris treatment resulted in shorter plants, more empty pods, increased numbers of abnormal seeds, and decreased yields. The field experiment showed that there were fewer R.pedestris and less soybean staygreen incidence in fields treated with insecticide than in untreated control fields.Together, these results suggest that R.pedestris infestation rather than virus infection induces staygreen syndrome and that growers in this region can mitigate staygreen syndrome via bean bug control.

摘要Recently, consumers prefer ready-to-eat foods due to their advantageous minimal input of time and effort.Soaking-cooking-drying is a typical procedure for preparing quick-cooking beans, where drying is the last but not least step. Therefore, this study aimed to compare the effect of microwave and hot air drying on the quality of quick-cooking mung bean.Mung bean was soaked,pre-cooked and then dried by microwave(60,300,and 600 W)and hot air(50,70,and 90ºC).All dried beans exhibited a larger volume,a cracked surface,a browning color,a shortened cooking time, and an increased in vitro digestibility. However, microwave treatment decreased the drying time from~120 to 25−30 min,and reduced the energy consumption by 0.04−0.15 kW·h.The quick dehydration process during microwave drying restricted the reassemble of gelatinized starch and the formation of weak V-type crystalline, thus further improving the digestibility of mung bean.Overall, this study suggested that microwave could be an alternative drying technique for preparing quick-cooking beans with high digestibility.
