Constructing Identity through Code-Switching in Social Media Contexts 认领 引用

This study focuses on Chinese social media platforms(Weibo and Douyin),adopting a mixed-methods approach combining quantitative and qualitative research to explore patterns of code-switching in online language and its role in identity negotiation among internet users.Quantitative analysis of 208 valid questionnaires and subsequent qualitative discourse analysis reveal that 83%of users unconsciously engage in Chinese-English code-switching,primarily demonstrating intra-sentential switching patterns where English words embed as salient“figures”against the Chinese“ground.”Results of the Chi-square test indicate significant correlations between code-switching frequency,types,and users’identity dimensions(p<0.05).Data identified three identity functions:cultural belonging,in-group signaling,and persona curation.The study confirms that code-switching in digital contexts has transcended the level of linguistic efficiency to become an important social infrastructure for internet users to construct their identities. 展开更多

This paper studies the situations in which students are likely to use codeswitching and analyzes it from the perspective of the mental world in Verscheren's Adaptation Theory. It shows that inadequate mastery of English language, cultural differences and the improper adjustment to context may lead to students' using of codeswitching. It also shows that the use of code-switching in students' talk adapts to students' cognitive elements and emotive elements as well. 展开更多

This study investigates students’attitudes towards classroom code-switching(CS)between Chinese and English,and how such attitudes are influenced by learning motivation and language anxiety,the two focal variables of the present study.A total of 550 students from a university in northwest China took part in an online survey.The results of quantitative analyses suggest a division of attitudes towards CS,acknowledging its usefulness but dismissing its symbolic value.Such attitudes can be predicted based on the focal learner characteristics.The implications of the findings are discussed vis-à-vis the social psychology of CS and an optimal use of CS to assist language learning and teaching. 展开更多

Thus,the relevent empirical studies were less and most of them only use students from the classrooms in the sec?ondary schools or the undergraduates in the universities as the subjects.They paid little attention to the EFL classrooms in the vo?cational colleges. Vocational college students are poor in English foundation. English teachers can not finish their teaching mission in English classroom, so the use of code-switching becomes a very common phenomenon in EFL class of vocational college. The paper reports on a study of young L2 （second language） English learners＇ dual code use as activated through a series of specially designed guided fantasies. The original concept of guided fantasies as a monolingually organised relaxation technique was extended to the area of bilingual reception and production. The goal was to examine the relationship between child imaginative faculty and a tendency to transfer understandings across the L1 （first language） and L2. The research consisted in exposing a class of I 0 nine-year-old children to eight guided fantasies expected to playfully attract their conscious attention to language properties and enable them to profit from L1 knowledge in L2 learning. The data were collected through the heuristically oriented qualitative study drawing on participant observation accompanied by field notes and recordings of student behaviours. The findings highlighted guided fantasies in their redefined form as a useful tool for encouraging young learners to rely on L 1 competence in making sense of L2 underlying principles. 展开更多

There has been a mass d... As the world economy becomes increasingly competitive, people move from one place to another. These movements lead to contacts between people from different cultural and linguistic backgrounds. There has been a mass drift of people, including the Igbo to all the cities in South Africa since 1994 with the end of apartheid. The study assessed the language background of the participants, and the kind of code-switching that exists in the inter-communication among the Igbo and South African Sesotho people in Bloemfontein. The data for the study were collected through questionnaire, interview, and recording of natural interactions in five different contexts （at shop, hospital, church, among friends, and at a family dinner）. The results of the study showed that words/phrase switches are more common in the interactions among Igbo and Sesotho people than sentence switch. The most common reasons for their switching are for convenience, identification with the dominant group, and appreciation. 展开更多

This article is based on a research investigating the communication in primary mathematics classrooms. One of the research＇s objectives was to determine what languages were used in the primary mathematics classrooms, and to what extent, do teachers and students resort to code-switching in teaching and learning mathematics. A total of 16 classroom mathematics lessons from primary schools in the Kelantan State of Malaysia were observed and recorded Within the four schools, two were SK （national schools） and two were SJKC （Chinese primary schools）. A rural school and an urban school constituted the two schools of the same type. The researcher observed four classes from two levels for each participating school, i.e., two Standard 2 classes from the lower primary level and two Standard 5 classes from the upper primary level. The two classes of each level were in fact comprised of a good class and a weak class. The use of languages in resorting to code-switching was examined across various factors, such as types of schools, school location, class levels, and types of classes. The notion of C-unit （communicative unit） proposed by Loban （1976） was used to analyze the types of languages use as well as their proportion of use. This article shows that by using C-unit as the unit of analysis, the qualitative data gathered from the classroom discourse can well be reported quantitatively in terms of the proportion of students＇ L1 （first language）, L2 （second language）, and code-mixing of L1 and L2 in response to various factors. 展开更多

It indicated that both teachers and students had positive attitude toward CS to Chinese in EFL classroom. The results in the classroom recording showed that students’ English proficiency level influenced the frequency of teachers’ CS;teachers alternate to Chinese mainly to facilitate students’ understanding or to emphasize some key points. 展开更多
