The litter trap method was used to evaluate litterfall with the litterbag method being utilized for litter decomposition. Seasonal patterns of litterfall were similar in the three forests, with two peaks occurring in September-November and March-May. The plantation revealed an annual litterfall of 4.38 x 103 kg ha-1, which was similar to those of SF and PF, but P1 had a lower mass loss rate and a higher C/N ratio. The C/N ratio may be a sound predictor for the decomposition differences. N concentrations of leaf litter in both the secondary forest and primitive forest increased first and then decreased, and the percentages of their final/initial values were 108.9% and 99.9%, respectively. P concentration in the three forests increased by the end of the study. The results of litterfall and decomposition indicated that in the plantation the potential to provide nutrients for soil organic matter was similar to those of SF and PF; however, its slower decomposition rate could result in a somewhat transient accumulation of litter in the forest floor.展开更多

We analyzed evergreen conifer(EGC) stands area(satellite data) and trees(Siberian pine, Pinus sibirica Du Tour, Siberian fir, Abies sibirica Ledeb.) growth increment(dendrochronology data) response to climate variables before and during the hiatus. During the hiatus, EGC area increased in the highlands(>1000 m)(+30%), whereas at low and middle elevations(<1000 m. a.s.l.) the EGC area decreased(-7%). The EGC area increase was observed on the rain-ward northwest slopes mainly. In highlands, EGC area increase mainly correlated with summer air temperature, whereas at low and middle elevations EGC area decrease correlated with drought index SPEI and vapor pressure deficit(VPD). EGC mortality(fir and Siberian pine) in lowland was caused by the synergy of water stress(inciting factor) and barkbeetle attacks(contributing factor). Tree growth increment(GI) dynamics differs with respect to elevation. At high elevation(1700 m) GI permanently increased since warming onset, whereas at the middle(900 m) and low elevations(450 m) GI increased until c. 1983 yr. with followed depression. That GI "breakpoint" occurred about a decade before hiatus onset. In spite of growth depression, during hiatus GI was higher than that in pre-warming period. At high elevation, GI positively responded to elevated June temperatures and negatively to moisture increase(precipitation, root zone moisture content, VPD, and SPEI). At low elevation GI negatively responded to June temperatures and positively to moisture increase. For both, low and high elevation, these patterns persisted throughout the study period(1967–2014). On the contrary, at middle elevations GI dependence on climate variables switch after breakpoint year(1983). Before breakpoint, June air temperature(positive correlation) and moisture(negative correlations) controlled GI. Further temperature increase leads GI depression and switched correlation signs to opposite(from positive to negative with temperature, and from negative to positive with moisture variables).展开更多

PnET-CN model describes the biogeochemical cycles of carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) and can assist in estimating carbon sequestration potential. For validation of PnET-CN, data from coniferous forest plantations in southern China was used. Simulated daily gross primary productivity (GPP) from 2005 to 2007 agreed well with observations (R2=0.56, S.D.=0.009). Simulations of monthly soil respiration (Rs) from 2005-2007 agreed well with Rs observations (R2=0.67, S.D. =0.03). Simu- lated annual net primary productivity (NPP) from 1998-2006 was 803+33 gCm 2a-1, about 4% higher than NPP observation (752+51 gCm-2a-1). Simulations of annual NEP from 2005-2007 only overestimate 9 gCm-2a-1 (4%), 4 gCm 2a-1 (1%) and 34 gCm 2a-1 (8%) compared to NEP observations, respectively. Simulated annual foliar N concentration (FolNCon) (1.09%) is 10% lower than observed monthly FolNCon (0.87%-1.58%). Simulated annual N leaching (0.26 gNm-2) is about 10% lower than leaching observation (0.29 gNm-2). PnET-CN model validation indicates that PnET-CN is capable to simulate daily GPP, annual NPP, annual NEP, monthly Rs, annual FolNCon and annual nitrate N leaching for subtropical coniferous planta- tions in southern China. The results obtained from the validation test revealed that PnET-CN model can be used to simulate carbon sequestration of planted coniferous forests in southern China to a high level of precision. Sensitivity analysis suggests that great care should be taken in developing generalizations as to how forests will respond to a changing climate. PnET-CN performed satisfactorily in comparison to other models that have already been calibrated and validated in coniferous planted subtropical forests in China. Based on PnET-CN validation and its comparison to other models, future improvement of PnET-CN should focus on seasonal foliar N dynamics and the effects of water stress on autotrophic respirations in subtropical coniferous plantations in southern China.展开更多

Karst.) stands of eastern Germany on three forest sites along an emission gradient of 3 (high input), 6, and 15 km (low input) downwind of a coal-fired power plant. Past emissions resulted in an atypical high mass of mineral fly ash constituents in the organic horizons at the high input site of 128 t ha-1 compared to 58 t ha-1 at the low input site. Magnetic susceptibility measurements proved that the high mineral content of the forest floor was a result of fly ash accumulation in these forest stands. Fly ash deposition in the organic horizons at Site I versus III significantly increased the pH values, effective cation exchange capacity, base saturation and, with exception of the L horizon, concentrations of mobile heavy metals Cd, Cr, and Ni, while stocks of organic C generally decreased. A principal component analysis showed that organic C content and base status mainly controlled soil microbial biomass and microbial respiration rates at these sites, while pH and mobile fractions of Cd, Cr, and Ni governed enzyme activities. Additionally, it was hypothesized that long-term fly ash emissions would eventually destabilize forest ecosystems. Therefore, the results of this study could become a useful tool for risk assessment in forest ecosystems that were subjected to past emissions from coal-fired power plants.展开更多

Mainly based on the PF-a numerical value denoting the water regime of soil and connected with the growth of plant, the study combined the moisture percentage of soil with PF to research in quantity the interrelation between the moisture percentage and PF in different succession phases of subalpine dark coniferous forest in Gongga Mountain. The results showed that: (1) In the same PF value, the moisture percentage in humus horizon increased gradually with the devel-opment of the succession of the dark coniferous forest; The moisture percentage of over-mature forest was the highest and>mature forest>half-mature forest>young growth forest; (2) With the increase of soil depth, the soil bulk density increased and the moisture percentage decreased, but the difference in the percentage of moisture was not notable in different succession phases. (3) In different succession series, the vegetation affected the soil water characteristics by increasing the soil organic matter, improving the soil construction, receding the soil bulk density and enhancing the soil porosity; (4) The humus horizon of the dark coniferous forest soil has the highest water holding capability in this region.展开更多

PVC cylinders in each of 5 forest types of a B. ermanii-dark coniferous forest ecotone were used to measure soil respirations both inside and outside of the cylinders. The contribution of roots to the total soil respiration rates ranged from 12.5% to 54.6%. The mean contribution of roots for the different plots varied with the season, increasing from 32.5% on June 26 to 36.6% on August 3 and to 41.8% on October 14. In addition, there existed a significant (P < 0.01) logarithmic relationship between total soil respiration rate and soil temperature at 5 cm soil depth. Also, a similar trend was observed for the soil respiration and soil water content at the surface (0-5 cm) during the same period of time.展开更多

Based on these estimated data, the heat factors to influence and control the distribution and growth of subalpine dark conifer forests in China are discussed. It is found that the most important heat index to influence and control the distribution and growth of subalpine dark conifer forests is neither the mean temperature in the warmest month, nor the maximum or minimum temperatures, but monthly accumulated temperature of>0℃ or monthly effective accumulated temperature of>5℃.When monthly accumulated temperature of>0℃ is more than 40℃, or monthly effective accumulated temperature of>5℃ is over 50℃, sub-alpine dark conifer forests cannot grow well. When monthly accumulated temperature of>5℃ is less than 60℃, sub-alpine dark conifer forests can not grow at all. When monthly effective accumulated temperature of>5℃ is in the range 15℃-45℃, subalpine dark conifer forests in China can grow well. The ecological significance of temperature in May and September, and in summer half year are discussed.展开更多

The results showed that this dark coniferous forest ecosystem of Gongga Mountain is a typical area of preferential flow and solute preferential transport, a process that can be classified into five parts. A great amount of solute was transported at high speed as the result of preferential flow in the soil and caused the density of the solute in both deep water and in groundwater to rise rapidly, which definitely increased pollution in the deep soil layer.展开更多

摘要The survival and mortality of conifer trees in response to climate change, particularly drought stress, have received considerable attention. However,it is crucial to explore the growth dynamics of the same conifer species in response to climate change in different climatic habitats. In this study,we aimed to quantify variations in the radial growth processes of conifer species, analyze their resilience during drought periods under different climatic habitats, and assess the impact of climate adaptation on conifer growth. We focused on two conifer species,Picea crassifolia(spruce)and Pinus tabuliformis(pine),which are distributed in both a humid habitat and a dry habitat in the northeastern Tibetan Plateau.Growth and resilience dynamics were identified across both climatic habitats and the contributions of temperature and moisture to the growth of the two species were simulated under drought stress using the VS-oscilloscope model.Spruce growth exhibited significant variability between climatic habitats.Specifically, the spruce growth rate declined in response to drought in the dry habitat(-0.91 cm2per decade,p0.01),although it still responded to stress during the growing season(p<0.05).Furthermore,spruce displayed reduced resistance during stress in dry habitats(-30.11%),while pine exhibited an enhanced recovery of growth rates to ensure survival(+39.62%).The climate adaptation strategies of the species were linked to the contribution of temperature and moisture to their growth rates.Moisture is critical for the growth recovery of both conifers in dry habitats when temperature-associated growth displays a‘bimodal’pattern during the growing season. These findings have significant ecological implications for understanding conifer forest processes in the context of global climate change.

摘要Mixed-species plantations are proven to enhance phosphorus(P)availability in subtropical forest ecosystems. However, the effect of coniferous-broadleaf mixed plantations on soil P cycling dynamics remains poorly understood.Through a long-term field experiment, the study investigated how mixed plantations influence soil P fractions, phoD and pqqC genes, and associated bacterial communities in bulk and rhizosphere soils. Results showed that compared to monocultures, the introduction of broad-leaved trees significantly increased labile P pools, particularly in the rhizosphere.Amplicon-based community profiling of phoD/pqqC genes demonstrated distinct compositional shifts in P-solubilizing bacterial communities across forest types and soil compartments. The pqqC-harboring bacterial communities were more closely related to the P fractions.More importantly, plant properties were important in explaining bulk soil labile P responses, while in rhizosphere soil, labile P was more strongly associated with soil properties, positively affecting labile P.These findings elucidate the complex interplay between tree diversity, microbial functional traits, and soil P transformations. This study underscores the critical role of mixed plantations in promoting microbial-mediated P mobilization and provides valuable insights for designing sustainable forest management strategies to optimize P utilization in subtropical ecosystems.

摘要Seasonal drought is a common occurrence in humid climates. The year 2003 was the driest year during the period 1985-2011 in southeastern China. The objective of this study was to elucidate the impact of the exceptional drought in 2003,compared with eddy flux measurements during 2004-11,on the dynamics of evapotranspiration (ET) and related factors,as well as their underlying mechanisms,in a subtropical coniferous plantation in southeastern China. It was found that daily ET decreased from 5.34 to 1.84 mm during the intensive drought period and recovered to 4.80 mm during the subsquent recovering drought period.Path analysis indicated that ET was mainly determined by canopy conductance and deep soil water content (50 cm) during the intensive drought and recovering drought periods, respectively. The canopy conductance offset the positive effect of air vapor pressure deficit on ET when suffering drought stress, while the canopy conductance enhanced the positive effect of air temperature on ET during the late growing season.Because the fine roots of this plantation are mainly distributed in shallow soil, and the soil water in the upper 40 cm did not satisfy the demand for ET,stomatal closure and defoliation were evident as physiological responses to drought stress.

摘要Cupressaceae is a conifer family rich in plants of horticultural importance, including Cupressus,Chamaecyparis,Juniperus, and Thuja, yet genomic surveys are lacking for this family.Cupressus gigantea, one of the many rare conifers that are threatened by climate change and anthropogenic habitat fragmentation, plays an ever-increasing role in ecotourism in Xizang. To infer how past climate change has shaped the population evolution of this species,we generated a de novo chromosome-scale genome(10.92 Gb)and compared the species'population history and genetic load with that of a widespread close relative,C.duclouxiana.Our demographic analyses, based on 83 resequenced individuals from multiple populations of the two species, revealed a sharp decline of population sizes during the first part of the Quaternary. However, populations of C.duclouxiana then started to recover, while C.gigantea populations continued to decrease until recently. The total genomic diversity of C.gigantea is smaller than that of C.duclouxiana, but contrary to expectations,C.gigantea has fewer highly and mildly deleterious mutations than C.duclouxiana, and simulations and statistical tests support purifying selection during prolonged inbreeding as the explanation. Our results highlight the evolutionary consequences of decreased population size on the genetic burden of a long-lived endangered conifer with large genome size and suggest that genetic purging deserves more attention in conservation management.

摘要Background:Herbs are an important part of the forest ecosystem, and their diversity and biomass can reflect the restoration of vegetation after forest thinning disturbances.Based on the near-mature secondary coniferous and broad-leaved mixed forest in Jilin Province Forestry Experimental Zone, this study analyzed seasonal changes of species diversity and biomass of the understory herb layer after different intensities of thinning. Results:The results showed that although the composition of herbaceous species and the ranking of importance values were affected by thinning intensity, they were mainly determined by seasonal changes.Across the entire growing season, the species with the highest importance values in thinning treatments included Carex pilosa,Aegopodium alpestre,Meehania urticifolia, and Filipendula palmata, which dominated the herb layer of the coniferous and broad-leaved mixed forest. The number of species,Margalef index,Shannon-Wiener index and Simpson index all had their highest values in May,and gradually decreased with months.Pielou index was roughly inverted“N”throughout the growing season.Thinning did not increase the species diversity.Thinning can promote the total biomass,above-and below-ground biomass. The number of plants per unit area and coverage were related to the total biomass,above-and below-ground biomass. The average height had a significantly positive correlation with herb biomass in May but not in July. However,it exerted a significantly negative correlation with herb biomass in September. The biomass in the same month increased with increasing thinning intensity.Total herb biomass,above-and below-ground biomass showed positive correlations with Shannon-Winner index,Simpson index and Pielou evenness index in May.Conclusions:Thinning mainly changed the light environment in the forest, which would improve the plant diversity and biomass of herb layer in a short time. And different thinning intensity had different effects on the diversity of understory herb layer. The findings provide theoretical basis and reference for reasonable thinning and tending in coniferous and broad-leaved mixed forests.

摘要Understory plants are important components of forest ecosystems and play a crucial role in regulating community structures, function realization, and community succession. However, little is known about how abiotic and biotic drivers affect the diversity of understory species in cold temperate coniferous forests in the semiarid climate region of North China. We hypothesized that(1)topographic factors are important environmental factors affecting the distribution and variation of understory strata,and(2)different understory strata respond differently to environmental factors;shrubs may be significantly affected by the overstory stratum, and herbs may be more affected by surface soil conditions. To test these hypotheses,we used the boosted regression tree method to analyze abiotic and biotic environmental factors that influence understory species diversity, using data from 280 subplots across 56 sites in cold temperate coniferous forests of North China.Elevation and slope aspect were the dominant and indirect abiotic drivers affecting understory species diversity, and individual tree size inequality(DBH variation)was the dominant biotic driver of understory species diversity;soil water content was the main edaphic factors affecting herb layers.Elevation, slope aspect, and DBH variation accounted for 36.4,14.5,and 12.1%,respectively,of shrub stratum diversity.Shrub diversity decreased with elevation within the range of altitude of this study, but increased with DBH variation;shrub diversity was highest on north-oriented slopes. The strongest factor affecting herb stratum species diversity was slope aspect, accounting for 25.9%of the diversity, followed by elevation(15.7%),slope(12.2%),and soil water content(10.3%).The highest herb diversity was found on southeast-oriented slopes and the lowest on northeast-oriented slopes;herb diversity decreased with elevation and soil water content, but increased with slope. The results of the study provide a reference for scientific management and biodiversity protection in cold temperate coniferous forests of North China.

摘要Investigations were conducted to quantify litterfall, and litter and nutrient accumulation in forest floor, and to acquire information on litter decomposition and nitrogen and phosphorus release patterns in three different subalpine coniferous forests, a plantation (P1), a secondary forest (SF), and a primitive forest (PF), in western Sichuan, China. The results of litterfall and decomposition indicated that in the plantation the potential to provide nutrients for soil organic matter was similar to those of SF and PF; however, its slower decomposition rate could result in a somewhat transient accumulation of litter in the forest floor.

摘要Background:Alpine coniferous forest ecosystems dominated by ectomycorrhizal(ECM)tree species are generally characterized by low soil nitrogen(N)availability but stabilized plant productivity. Thus, elucidating potential mechanisms by which plants maintain efficient N acquisition is crucial for formulating optimized management practices in these ecosystems. Methods:We summarize empirical studies conducted at a long-term field monitoring station in the alpine coniferous forests on the eastern Tibetan Plateau,China. We propose a root-soil interaction-based framework encompassing key components including soil N supply, microbial N transformation, and root N uptake in the rhizosphere. Results:We highlight that,(i)a considerable size of soil dissolved organic N pool mitigates plant dependence on inorganic N supply;(ii)ectomycorrhizal roots regulate soil N transformations through both rhizosphere and hyphosphere effects, providing a driving force for scavenging soil N;(iii)a complementary pattern of plant uptake of different soil N forms via root-and mycorrhizal mycelium-pathways enables efficient N acquisitions in response to changing soil N availability. Conclusions:Multiple rhizosphere processes abovementioned collaboratively contribute to efficient plant N acquisition in alpine coniferous forests. Finally,we identify several research outlooks and directions to improve the understanding and prediction of ecosystem functions in alpine coniferous forests under on-going global changes.

摘要"Warming hiatus" occurred in the AltaySayan Mountain Region, Siberia in c. 1997–2014. Further temperature increase leads GI depression and switched correlation signs to opposite(from positive to negative with temperature, and from negative to positive with moisture variables).

摘要The study area lies in the Dadu River drainage area in upstream Yangtze River. The spatial distribution of subalpine coniferous forests in 1989 and 2009 was extracted by means of a combined method of object orientation and visual interpretation, and then the overlaying analysis of these data was conducted. The type and spatial location of succession were discovered and served as the sample of dependant variable.Meanwhile, supported by GIS technology and based on DEM and thematic data, the eight variables including altitude, slope, sin and cosin of aspect, curvity of land surface, and distance to residential area, cultivated land and road were extracted served as the sample of spatial succession of subalpine coniferous forests to fit Logistic Regression, and then the contribution of each independent variable as well as the spatial property of the occurrence probability of succession was calculated. The results suggested that, during the succession of subalpine coniferous forests to meadow, the closer to the residential area and cultivated land, the greater the contribution to succession is.In particular, when the distance to the residential area decreases by one unit, the probability for its conversion to meadow will be increased by 1.15 times.During the succession of subalpine coniferous forests to deciduous-broadleaved shrubs, the sin of aspect and distance to residential area contribute more, and the probability of succession increases with increasing degree of northwardness,i.e.when the degree of northwardness increases by one unit, the probability will be increased by 1.2 times. The quantitative analysis of spatial succession property of subalpine coniferous forests will supply scientific basis to the protection and restoration of subalpine coniferous forests.

摘要A generalized, lumped-parameter ecological model PnET-CN was calibrated and validated for a subtropical coniferous plantation in southern China. Based on PnET-CN validation and its comparison to other models, future improvement of PnET-CN should focus on seasonal foliar N dynamics and the effects of water stress on autotrophic respirations in subtropical coniferous plantations in southern China.

摘要Physical, chemical, and microbial properties of forest soils subjected to long-term fly ash depositions were analyzed in spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.) stands of eastern Germany on three forest sites along an emission gradient of 3 (high input), 6, and 15 km (low input) downwind of a coal-fired power plant. Therefore, the results of this study could become a useful tool for risk assessment in forest ecosystems that were subjected to past emissions from coal-fired power plants.

摘要Because of the distinction of soil property and humus content, soil water content is not ideal to indicate whether it is suitable to the growth of plant. (3) In different succession series, the vegetation affected the soil water characteristics by increasing the soil organic matter, improving the soil construction, receding the soil bulk density and enhancing the soil porosity; (4) The humus horizon of the dark coniferous forest soil has the highest water holding capability in this region.

摘要Total and root-severed soil respiration rates for five plots set up 50 m apart in a Betula ermanii Cham.-dark coniferous forest ecotone on a north-facing slope of the Changbai Mountains, China, were measured to evaluate the seasonal variations of soil respiration, to assess the effect of soil temperature and water content on soil respiration, and to estimate the relative contributions of root respiration to the total soil respiration. Also, a similar trend was observed for the soil respiration and soil water content at the surface (0-5 cm) during the same period of time.

摘要Objective:To explore cholinesterase inhibitory and antioxidant effect of six coniferous trees(Abies bornmulleriana,Picea pungens,Juniperus communis,Cedrus libani,Taxus baccata, and Cupressus sempervirens var.horizantalis).Methods:Acetone(Ace),ethyl acetate(EtOAc),and ethanol(EtOH)extracts prepared from the needles and shoots of the six coniferous trees were screened for their acetylcholinesterase(AChE)and butyrylcholinesterasc(BChE)inhibitory activity at 100μg/mL.Antioxidant activity of the extracts was tested using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl(DPPH)and N,N-dimethyl-p-phenylendiamine(DMPD)radical scavenging,nietal-chelation capacity,ferric-(FRAP)and phosphomolibdenum-reducing antioxidant power(PRAP)assays. All of the assays were performed in ELISA microplate reader.Total phenol and flavonoid amounts in the extracts were determined spectrophotometrically. Results:Among thirty-six extracts in total, the shoot-Ace extract of Cupressus sempervirens var.horizantalis exerted the highest inhibition against AChE[(54.84±2.51)%],while the needle-Ace extract of Cedrus libani was the most effective in inhibiting BChE[(67.54±0.30)%].The highest DPPH radical scavenging effect,FRAP and PRAP was observed in the shoot-Ace and EtOAc extracts from Taxus baccata.whereas all the extracts showed a variable degree of scavenging effect against DPMD radical. The shoot-EtOAc extract of Cedrus libani had the highest metalchelation capacity[(58.04±0.70)%].The shoot extracts of Taxus baccata were determined to have the richest total phenol content, which may contribute to its marked antioxidant activity. Conclusions:The conifer species screened in this study may contain cholinesterase-inhibiting and antioxidant properties, which might be useful against Alzheimer's disease.
摘要Temperature of every month on both the upper and lower boundaries of sub-alpine dark conifer forests at various sites in China are estimated in terms of their distributions and temperature records. The ecological significance of temperature in May and September, and in summer half year are discussed.

摘要We selected a dark coniferous forest ecosystem of Gongga Mountain in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River as our research area to study the preferential flow and solute preferential transport by adding the tracers KNO3 and KBr to the self-made soil column equipment in different ways to examine density and volume changes of inflows and outflows of a mass input (impulse input) and a stable, well-distributed input (step input)). The results showed that this dark coniferous forest ecosystem of Gongga Mountain is a typical area of preferential flow and solute preferential transport, a process that can be classified into five parts. A great amount of solute was transported at high speed as the result of preferential flow in the soil and caused the density of the solute in both deep water and in groundwater to rise rapidly, which definitely increased pollution in the deep soil layer.
