Accurate skin temperature is one of the critical factors in successfully assimilating satellite radiance data over land.However,model-simulated skin temperature may not be accurate enough.To address this issue,an extended skin temperature control variable(TSCV) approach is proposed in a variational assimilation framework,which also considers the background error correlation between skin temperature and atmospheric variables.A series of single observation tests and a 10-day cycling assimilation experiment were conducted to evaluate the impact of the TSCV approach on the assimilation of AMSU-A and ATMS(Advanced Technology Microwave Sounder) microwave temperature-sounding channels over land.The results of the single observation tests show that by applying the TSCV approach,not only the direct analysis of skin temperature is realized,but also the interaction between skin temperature and atmospheric variables can be achieved during the assimilation process.The results of the cycling experiment demonstrate that the TSCV approach improves the skin temperature analysis,which in turn reduces the RMSE of the surface variables and low-level air temperature forecasts.The TSCV approach also reduces the difference between the observed and simulated brightness temperatures of both microwave and infrared window channels over land,suggesting that the approach can facilitate the radiance simulation of these channels,thus contributing to the assimilation of window channels. 展开更多

Different choices of control variables in variational assimilation can bring about different influences on the analyzed atmospheric state. Based on the WRF model's three-dimensional variational assimilation system, this study compares the be- havior of two momentum control variable options-streamfunction velocity potential (ψ-χ) and horizontal wind components (U-V)-in radar wind data assimilation for a squall line case that occurred in Jiangsu Province on 24 August 2014. The wind increment from the single observation test shows that the ψ-χ control variable scheme produces negative increments in the neighborhood around the observation point because streamfunction and velocity potential preserve integrals of velocity. On the contrary, the U-V control variable scheme objectively reflects the information of the observation itself. Furthermore, radial velocity data from 17 Doppler radars in eastern China are assimilated. As compared to the impact of conventional observation, the assimilation of radar radial velocity based on the U-V control variable scheme significantly improves the mesoscale dynamic field in the initial condition. The enhanced low-level jet stream, water vapor convergence and low-level wind shear result in better squall line forecasting. However, the ψ-χ control variable scheme generates a discontinuous wind field and unrealistic convergence/divergence in the analyzed field, which lead to a degraded precipitation forecast. 展开更多

Use of data assimilation to initialize hydrometeors plays a vital role in numerical weather prediction(NWP).To directly analyze hydrometeors in data assimilation systems from cloud-sensitive observations,hydrometeor control variables are necessary.Common data assimilation systems theoretically require that the probability density functions(PDFs)of analysis,background,and observation errors should satisfy the Gaussian unbiased assumptions.In this study,a Gaussian transform method is proposed to transform hydrometeors to more Gaussian variables,which is modified from the Softmax function and renamed as Quasi-Softmax transform.The Quasi-Softmax transform method then is compared to the original hydrometeor mixing ratios and their logarithmic transform and Softmax transform.The spatial distribution,the non-Gaussian nature of the background errors,and the characteristics of the background errors of hydrometeors in each method are studied.Compared to the logarithmic and Softmax transform,the Quasi-Softmax method keeps the vertical distribution of the original hydrometeor mixing ratios to the greatest extent.The results of the D′Agostino test show that the hydrometeors transformed by the Quasi-Softmax method are more Gaussian when compared to the other methods.The Gaussian transform has been added to the control variable transform to estimate the background error covariances.Results show that the characteristics of the hydrometeor background errors are reasonable for the Quasi-Softmax method.The transformed hydrometeors using the Quasi-Softmax transform meet the Gaussian unbiased assumptions of the data assimilation system,and are promising control variables for data assimilation systems. 展开更多

In electrical discharge machining of titanium alloys,the1400-1600℃melting points of titanium alloysr equire the input of sufficient discharge energy to melt and vaporize the titanium alloy.However,because of low thermo-c onduction,the input energy can easily raise the temperature of the gap liquid to a high enough level.Usually,thee levated temperature of the gap liquid resulted in a reduction of the gap breakdown strength,so that the liquid dielectricd eionization after pulse discharging tends to be incomplete and causes occurrences of large arcing pulses,burning thew orkpiece surface and causing electrode wear.This contradiction hinders the machining of titanium alloy by Electrical Discharge Machining(EDM).To solve this issue,this study thoroughly analyzed the factors influencing gap liquidb reakdown strength during EDM and identified two key elements:gap distance and amount of chips left in gap.Based ont his analysis,a solution was proposed,which involved the development of a multiple variable adaptive control system.T his system adjusted the gap servo voltage in proportion to the gap distance to control the discharge types of pulses,r egulated the electrode discharge time to the quantity of chips left in the gap in an electrode discharge time.By dynamically adjusting these two variables,the system maintained an optimal liquid breakdown strength,facilitatinge ffective machining while preventing arcing in machining.Experimental validation confirmed that this multiple variable control system significantly enhanced the EDM process for titanium alloys,even under challenging conditions,d emonstrating its practical utility. 展开更多

Bilateral robotic training offers a promising solution for upper-limb motor recovery;however,conventional Mirror Therapy(MT)systems typically provide fixed assistance and rely solely on the motion of the unimpaired limb.This paper presents a bilateral intention-driven control strategy for an upper-limb rehabilitation exoskeleton that fuses motor intentions from both the healthy and affected arms.By integrating inertial signals,surface Electromyography(sEMG),and interaction torque,the system employs a fuzzy variable admittance controller combined with sliding mode control to generate adaptive assistive torque that reflects the user’s physical engagement.Experiments involving 4 healthy participants and 11 post-stroke patients were conducted under three control conditions:no interlimb coupling,fixed admittance,and variable admittance.Compared to fixed-parameter control,the proposed variable admittance strategy improved bilateral coordination by 18.6%,reduced interlimb motion lag from 1.19 s to 0.54 s,enhanced intention consistency by 18.33%,and increased average interaction torque by 23.13%.These results demonstrate that combining bilateral intention fusion with adaptive admittance control can significantly enhance movement synchronization and voluntary engagement,offering a promising control paradigm to enhance patient engagement and motion coordination for rehabilitation robotics. 展开更多

The mathematical model of a transport aircraft would be subjected to a sudden change when heavy cargo is dropped off in airdropping,which exerts serious influences upon the safety of the aircraft.A variable structure controller is specially designed for handling the airdrop process.The nonlinear system is linearized by input-output feedback linearization using differential geometry theories.On this basis,an inner loop system for velocity and attitude tracking control is designed by using the exponentially approaching rule of the variable structure theory.The whole flight control system is integrated with the outer loop flight altitude control.Digital simulation evidences the applicability of the system to potentially catastrophic course in airdropping heavy cargo and provides robustness against system parameter perturbation. 展开更多

An adaptive variable structure control method based on backstepping is proposed for the attitude maneuver problem of rigid spacecraft with reaction wheel dynamics in the presence of uncertain inertia matrix and external disturbances. The proposed control approach is a combination of the backstepping and the adaptive variable structure control. The cascaded structure of the attitude maneuver control system with reaction wheel dynamics gives the advantage for applying the backstepping method to construct Lyapunov functions. The robust stability to external disturbances and parametric uncertainty is guaranteed by the adaptive variable structure control. To validate the proposed control algorithm, numerical simulations using the proposed approach are performed for the attitude maneuver mission of rigid spacecraft with a configuration consisting of four reaction wheels for actuator and three magnetorquers for momentum unloading. Simulation results verify the effectiveness of the proposed control algorithm. 展开更多

In this paper,adaptive variable structure neural control is presented for a class of uncertain multi-input multi-output(MIMO)nonlinear systems with state time-varying delays and unknown nonlinear dead-zones.The unknown time-varying delay uncer-tainties are compensated for using appropriate Lyapunov-Krasovskii functionals in the design.The approach removes the assumption of linear function outside the deadband without necessarily constructing a dead-zone inverse as an added contribution.By utilizing the integral-type Lyapunov function and introducing an adaptive compensation term for the upper bound of the residual and optimal approximation error as well as the dead-zone disturbance,the closed-loop control system is proved to be semi-globally uniformly ultimately bounded.In addition,a modified adaptive control algorithm is given in order to avoid the high-frequency chattering phenomenon.Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the approach. 展开更多

To track the rapidly changing temperature profiles of thermal cycling of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) accurately, an innovative feedforward variable structural proportional-integral-derivative (FVSPID) controller was developed. Based on the step response test data of the heat block, a reduced first order model was estabfished at different operating points. Based on the reduced model, the FVSPID controller combined a feedforward path with the variable structural proportional-integral-derivative (PID) control. The modified feedforward action provided directly the optimal predictive power for the desired setpoint to speed up the dynamic response. To cooperate with the feedforward action, a variable structural PID was applied, where the P mode was used in the case of the largest errors to speed up response, whereas the PD mode was used in the case of larger errors to suppress overshoot, and finally the PID mode was applied for small error conditions to eliminate the steady state offset. Experimental results illustrated that compared to the conventional PID controller, the FVSPID controller can not only reduce the time taken to complete a standard PCR protocol, but also improve the accuracy of gene amplification. 展开更多

To reduce the chattering of the sliding mode controller, a modified exponential reaching law and hyperbolic tangent function are applied to the design of visual controller and robot joint controller. A kind of artificial neural network (ANN) is proposed for detecting serious faults, and variable structure (VS) model-following control is constructed for accommodating small faults. The proposed framework takes both advantages of qualitative way and quantitative way of fault detection and accommodation. Moreover, the uncertainty case is investigated and the VS controller is modified. The actual vehicle may be considered as an uncertain system. Cornering stiffness of front and rear wheels and external disturbances are varied in a limited range. The model-following variable structure control method is used to control both front and rear wheels steering operations of the vehicle, so that steering responses of the vehicle follow from those of the reference model. By numerical results obtained from computer simulation, it is demonstrated that the control system model can cope with the effects of parameter perturbations and outside disturbances. 展开更多

Based on consideration of the differential relations between the immeasurable variables and measurable variables in electro-hydraulic servo system,adaptive dynamic recurrent fuzzy neural networks(ADRFNNs) were employed to identify the primary uncertainty and the mathematic model of the system was turned into an equivalent linear model with terms of secondary uncertainty.At the same time,gain adaptive sliding mode variable structure control(GASMVSC) was employed to synthesize the control effort.The results show that the unrealization problem caused by some system's immeasurable state variables in traditional fuzzy neural networks(TFNN) taking all state variables as its inputs is overcome.On the other hand,the identification by the ADRFNNs online with high accuracy and the adaptive function of the correction term's gain in the GASMVSC make the system possess strong robustness and improved steady accuracy,and the chattering phenomenon of the control effort is also suppressed effectively. 展开更多

This paper analyzes the fuzzy variable structure control algorithms for delay systems and describes the compensation mechanism of the integral factor to the effect of the delay. Based on the linearized model of the congestion-avoidance flow-control mode of transmission control protocol (TCP), we present delay control algorithms for active queue management (AQM) and discuss the parameter tuning of the algorithms. The NS (network simulator) simulation results show that the proposed control scheme for the nonlinear TCP/AQM model has good performance and robustness with respect to the uncertainties of the round-trip time (RTT) and the number of active TCP sessions. Compared to other similar schemes, our algorithms perform better in terms of packet loss ratio, throughput and butter fluctuation. 展开更多

In this paper, a semiactive variable stiffness (SVS) device is used to decrease cable oscillations caused by parametric excitation, and the equation of motion of the parametric vibration of the cable with this SVS device is presented. The ON/OFF control algorithm is used to operate the SVS control device. The vibration response of the cable with the SVS device is numerically studied for a variety of additional stiffness combinations in both the frequency and time domains and for both parametric and classical resonance vibration conditions. The numerical studies further consider the cable sag effect. From the numerical results, it is shown that the SVS device effectively suppresses the cable resonance vibration response, and as the stiffness of the device increases, the device achieves greater suppression of vibration. The VSC control law is achieved using Lyapunov method and pole placement. To eliminate the chattering phenomena, a saturation function is adopted. The proposed VSC approach is fairly robust to load disturbance and system parameter variation. Since the distortion. including phase lag and amplitude attenuation occurs in the system sinusoid response, the amplitude and phase control (APC) algorithm, based on Adaline neural network and using LMS algorithm, is developed for distortion cancellation. The APC controller is simple and can on-line adjust, thus it gives accurate tracking. 展开更多
