This study examines the linguistic strategies used in Sino-U.S.news reports on the 2020 closure of the Chinese Consulate in Houston to construct verbal attacks and criticisms within political discourse.Drawing on a corpus of 18 articles from China Daily and The New York Times,we analyze how passivization and nominalization are employed as indirect strategies to attribute blame and challenge the legitimacy of the opposing nation’s actions.The research findings reveal that both media outlets use these linguistic features to obscure the agent of actions,yet with distinct rhetorical goals:China Daily uses them to criticize the U.S.for its“unjustified provocation”,while The New York Times uses them to justify the U.S.response to alleged Chinese“espionage activities”.This article argues that these linguistic strategies are not neutral but serve as powerful media for conducting verbal attacks in a globally interconnected political landscape,where direct confrontation is often avoided in favor of more subtle discursive practices. 展开更多

The integration of ecological civilization into disciplinary education has made the environmental value guidance of English textbooks a key research issue in foreign language education.Drawing on Systemic Functional Linguistics(SFL)and Ecolinguistics,this study conducts a transitivity analysis of nature-related ecological discourses in Chinese junior secondary English textbooks(FLTRP edition)to examine the ecological values embedded in the textbooks.The findings show that material,relational,and mental processes dominate the textbooks'ecological discourses,featuring extensive depictions of human ecological activities,psychological responses,and entity relationships.The high frequency of animate and physical participants reflects human attention to the ecological environment and efforts toward ecological protection.Based on the analysis,this paper identifies three types of ecological values in the textbooks and proposes suggestions for making ecological ethics explicit in English teaching,providing a reference for integrating environmental education into foreign language instruction. 展开更多

Urban image is a vital component of a city’s cultural soft power,and a positive urban image serves as an intangible asset.Based on the NOW(News On the Web)corpus and employing critical discourse analysis,this paper systematically examines the portrayal of Tianjin in international mainstream media.The findings reveal that,from a spatiotemporal perspective,Tianjin has consistently attracted attention from mainstream English-language media worldwide.Thematic analysis indicates that international coverage predominantly focuses on topics such as“northern coastal municipality”,“host of major events”,“economic and trade hub”,and“healthcare.”In terms of reporting tone,overseas mainstream media generally maintain a positive to neutral stance in coverage related to Tianjin.In future communication efforts,Tianjin should strive to narrate its own stories effectively to further enhance its international influence. 展开更多

Based on the theory of multimodal discourse analysis,this study analyzes the synergistic effects of textual,visual,and other semiotic resources in Alibaba’s official ESG reports,revealing how these resources construct environmental narratives and empower corporate image through semiotic practices.The research,conducted from the dimensions of representational meaning,interactive meaning,compositional meaning,and modal synergy,deciphers how the semiotic system deeply integrates ecological concepts.The findings indicate a high degree of text-image synergy during the 2022-2024 period,effectively presenting themes such as“Repairing the Green Planet,”“Digital Empowerment for Carbon Reduction,”and“Clean Energy and Circular Economy.”However,the visual presentation in the 2025 report is relatively concentrated on flowcharts and data graphs,showing insufficient multidimensional representation of environmental modules and public engagement,with an overall weakening of text-image synergy.This study enriches the application of multimodal analysis in the field of environmental narrative research.Its theoretical and practical value lies in revealing the strategic role of semiotic synergy in building a sustainable brand and providing a communication pathway reference for promoting public environmental awareness and sustainable consumption behaviors. 展开更多

Corporate image is the external manifestation of a company’s cultural and spiritual essence,as well as the overall impression formed through its interactions with the public.Huawei,as a successful multinational enterprise,has established a robust corporate image in the international market through technological innovation and brand building.Moreover,Huawei’s development is closely aligned with national policies and strategies,making it a representative enterprise for showcasing China’s technological independence and national image.This study examines Huawei’s English press releases on product launches published between 2022 and 2024 and conducts a comparative analysis with similar materials from Apple’s official website.Based on Fairclough’s three-dimensional discourse analysis model,this research explores the linguistic features of Huawei’s corporate image construction from the perspectives of text,discourse practice,and social practice.The findings reveal that Huawei has successfully constructed a corporate image that emphasizes technological innovation,prioritizes user needs,and underscores its identity as a national enterprise.This study not only sheds light on Huawei’s strategies for image construction in international competition but also provides a valuable reference for Chinese enterprises in their cultural communication and brand building during the globalization process. 展开更多

As a new research field,multimodal discourse analysis is facing a lot of challenges.On the one hand,the status of multimodality in traditional linguistics is questioned.Many linguists argue that nonlinguistic signs such as gestures and visual images are out of the scope of linguistics.On the other hand,the theories and methods of multimodal discourse analysis are still at an early stage of development and have many limitations.Moreover,many researchers have misunderstandings of the field.In view of these,this article provides a brief explanation of the basic questions of multimodal discourse analysis,including why we analyze multimodal discourse,whether linguistic theories are applicable to nonlinguistic signs such as visual images and gesture,what is the scope of multimodal research,what are the main theories and methods,and what are the limitations and misunderstandings.It further points out that researchers need to have the awareness of making their research interdisciplinary,empirical,and application-oriented.It argues that multimodal research should be based on theoretical and methodological innovation,and should aim at solving real communication problems in the multimedia age.The accurate understanding of these questions is crucial for developing multimodal discourse analysis into a new discipline with strong theoretical and methodological support. 展开更多

Language acquisition is far more than targeting its surface systems including grammatical patterns, lexical meanings, set structures and the like. It is for it that a shift is naturally coming up, i.e. more and more people's increasing concern on language use in real situations. For adult learners in China, English is quite different from the mother tongue that can be acquired naturally and with ease. In the learning process, linguistic knowledge is usually taught first, and then for the purpose of grasping language skills learners' automaticization should be involved. On the ground of the fact that classroom teaching is the main channel for most college students' to have their language input, teachers' wise strategies and full use of classrooms are quite essential for their language intake and general level as a whole. To enhance students' pragmatic competence, i.e. the ability to apply language flexibly and appropriately, this paper tries to find a way out in view of this concept, namely, the promotion of pragmatic competence by discourse analysis in writing classes. 展开更多

The theory of proximization is an effective discourse strategy to study the speaker’s ability to achieve his own legitimacy or reinforce the other’s illegitimacy,and its superiority can be maximized by means of quantitative and comparative analysis.In this study,we collected reports on Trump’s and Biden’s policies on China to build two small corpora,with a total of 11,030 words in the Trump corpus and 17,566 words in the Biden corpus.The critical discourse analysis is combined with proximization theory.With the help of BFSU Qualitative Coder 1.2,Antconc 3.5.7,and Log-Likelihood and Chi-Square Calculator 1.0,a critical cognitive score of the relevant discourse was conducted from the perspective of proximization theory.It has been found that:(1)Both Trump and Biden administrations resort to a large number of spatial proximization strategies to build ODCs converging to IDCs with China as the ODC,posing a threat to internal physical IDCs;(2)in the use of temporal proximization strategy,both administrations use primarily modal verbs and various entities to construct ODCs that extend indefinitely into the present and future,emphasizing the urgency and the threat of the effect and reinforcing the legitimacy of their actions;(3)in terms of axiological proximization strategy,the two administrations differ greatly from each other,indicating that there are still discursive biases. 展开更多

Hedging is a communication strategy frequently used by the spokespersons at the press conference.This thesis intends to find out the ideologies hidden behind those hedges under the guidance of Fairclough’s three-dimensional model.As a research method of linguistics,critical discourse analysis(CDA)aims to reveal the the relationship among language,power and ideology hidden behind the language.This thesis adopts Prince’classification criteria of hedges to identify and count the different types of hedges in the research data selected from Chinese and American government websites.The analysis is conducted at the following three steps:description,interpretation and explanation.The first stage is to recognize and count the hedges in two languages,then to find their similarities and differences and the last step is to find possible reasons for those similarities and differences and the ideologies behind the hedges.Analysis results show that differences in culture values and diplomatic ideology contribute to the different ideologies. 展开更多

Classroom discourse analysis plays a significant role in linguistics and language teaching. The present research is a case study, aiming to explore how the Interpersonal meta-function is reflected in the English classroom discourse, as well as to provide some suggestions for pedagogical improvement based on the findings. The results of the analysis indicate that in terms of Mood, the declarative clause is most frequently used, followed by the interrogative and imperative clause respectively; in terms of modality, the teacher uses modal verbs and Mood Adjuncts to express the degree of certainty; in terms of personal pronouns, the teacher prefers to use the first person plural pronouns. It is suggested that the class should be student-centered and that an equal teacher-student relationship should be established. 展开更多
