Understanding the propagation patterns of hydrological droughts is crucial for drought prevention,disaster mitigation,and water resource management.Two common methodological frameworks are employed:standardized indices,represented by the Standardized Streamflow Index(SSI),and threshold‐based(nonstandardized)indices,represented by the variable drought threshold(VDT)and fixed drought threshold(FDT).However,differences and similarities between these two types of methods in identifying hydrological droughts and characterizing their propagation patterns(e.g.,onset,peak intensity,and termination)have not been systematically examined.To address this gap,the source region of Yellow River basin(SRYB),an area with relatively limited human influence,is selected as a case study.The results reveal several key similarities and distinctions:(i)The average duration of hydrological droughts during 1956–2022 is similar between SSI and VDT,but significantly longer when identified by FDT.The average severity derived from FDT is lower than that from VDT.(ii)All three methods effectively capture the spatial propagation behavior of hydrological droughts across the SRYB,which generally exhibits a decreasing intensity from upstream to downstream.(iii)Marked differences exist in the intra‑annual timing of event occurrences:SSI and VDT show an approximately even monthly distribution,whereas FDT indicates a pronounced concentration of drought events in low‐flow periods.(iv)The onset,peak intensity,and termination of hydrological droughts identified by FDT align well with wet‐dry transitions,a feature not reflected in the results from SSI or VDT.(v)These discrepancies stem from the“relative”nature of SSI and VDT—which evaluate drought events against reference‐period thresholds,leading to similar average durations and uniform seasonal distributions—and the“absolute”nature of FDT,which uses inherent low‐flow thresholds,resulting in longer durations,reduced severity,seasonal concentration,and better alignment with wet‐dry transitions.This study provides critical and actionable insights for selecting appropriate hydrological drought identification methods,thereby supporting sustainable water resource management and enhancing water security under drought conditions. 展开更多

To address the short peak-production period and limited incremental recovery commonly encountered during chemical flooding of high water-cut reservoirs,this study investigates the dynamic evolution of displacement fronts and their controlling factors through laboratory experiments and numerical simulation.Two-dimensional plate flooding experiments were first conducted to characterize the evolution of the oil bank in homogeneous and heterogeneous reservoirs,revealing a four-stage process of formation,enrichment,mobilization,and residual depletion.Based on water-cut behavior,the flooding process was further classified into early-response,peak-response,and late-response stages.A three-dimensional heterogeneous reservoir model was subsequently developed to quantify the spatiotemporal evolution of the pressure,oil-bank,and chemical-agent fronts.The results show a clear displacementfront sequence,with the pressure front leading,the oil bank occupying the intermediate zone,and the chemical-agent front trailing behind.Sensitivity analyses demonstrate that the flooding system,chemical concentration,and slug size significantly influence oil-bank development.Compared with polymer flooding and polymer-surfactant flooding,the heterogeneous flooding system increases the maximum oil-bank magnitude by 72% and 43%,respectively.Higher chemical concentrations promote oil-bank enrichment,although the incremental benefit gradually diminishes.In addition,a critical slug size of approximately 0.4 PV is identified,beyond which further increases yield limited improvement. 展开更多

Cold storage is the vital infrastructure of cold chain logistics. In this study, we analyzed the spatial pattern evolution characteristics, spatial autocorrelation and influencing factors of cold storage in China by using kernel density estimation(KDE), spatial autocorrelation analysis(SAA), and spatial error model(SEM). Results showed that: 1) the spatial distribution of cold storage in China is unbalanced, and has evolved from ‘one core’ to ‘one core and many spots’, that is, ‘one core’ refers to the Bohai Rim region mainly including Beijing, Tianjin, Hebei, Shandong and Liaoning regions, and ‘many spots’ mainly include the high-density areas such as Shanghai, Fuzhou, Guangzhou, Zhengzhou, Hefei, Wuhan, ürümqi. 2) The distribution of cold storage has significant global spatial autocorrelation and local spatial autocorrelation, and the ‘High-High’ cluster area is the most stable, mainly concentrated in the Bohai Rim;the ‘Low-Low’ cluster area is grouped in the southern China. 3) Economic development level, population density, traffic accessibility, temperature and land price, all affect the location choice of cold storage in varying degrees, while the impact of market demand on it is not explicit. 展开更多

Transition from old to new economic drivers(TONED) is of great significance for optimizing economic structures. Using a combination of methods including entropy weight technique for order preference by similarity to ideal solution, geospatial analysis, and optimal parameter geodetector, this study investigates the patterns and mechanisms of China's TONED in the prefecture-level cities from 2011 to 2020. The findings reveal that(1) the TONED exhibited a spatial distribution characterized by higher levels in the east and lower levels in the west, along with a pyramidal hierarchy of levels. The distribution of hot and cold spots roughly followed the Heihe-Yulin line.(2) The informatization levels, openness to the outside world, and urbanization played a dominant role in the TONED. The types of dual-factor interactions exhibited both dual-factor enhancement and non-linear enhancement effects.(3) The eastern and central regions were more likely to promote the TONED through enhanced informatization levels, whereas the western region relied more on increasing openness. This study finds that the TONED results from the combined effects of three geographical natures, each playing a distinct role. The recommendations provided can serve as a reference for China and other developing countries to implement the TONED in the context of deglobalization. 展开更多

Following a new train of thinking, this paper has explored first the potential information in the ground resistivitydata observed by the existing geoelectric observation system, investigated and proposed a new dimensionlessgeoelectric precursor factor, the degree of ground resistivity anisotropy, S, and studied the characteristics of dynamic evolution pattern of S during the seismogenic process. The results show that, during the seismogenic process, the degree of ground resistivity anisotropy (S) displays h process of 'normal' → 'abnormal strengthening(amplitude, range)' → 'abnormal weakening'→ 'earthquake occurrence'→ 'normal'. The earthquake wouldoccur at the time when the S value has entered the late stage of strengthening and turns to weaken and in the gradient belt on the margin ofS anomaly region. The dynamic evolution pattern ofS reflects the changes of the tectonicstress field during the seismogenic process. Therefore, it would be possible to trace the process of earthquake generation and occurrence from the dynamic evolution pattern ofS so as to service eaJ'thquake prediction. 展开更多

Mountain area is an important geographical unit of land,and its ecology is sensitive and fragile.Over the past few decades,human activities have caused dramatic changes in land use in mountainous areas,which caused changes in landscape patterns and impacts on the ecological environment.It is unknown how the mechanism of land use affects the landscape pattern at different scales.The Hantai District,a typical human settlement in the mountain area in Shaanxi,China,was chosen as the study area.Based on the remote sensing images,the mathematical models and landscape indexes were adopted to evaluate the impact of land use change from 1998 to 2017 on the landscape pattern at different scales,and its main driving forces were analyzed.The results showed that the urbanized land expanded largest from 15.39%to 24.30%,and cultivated land experienced the largest decline from 43.54%to 35.35%.Changes in land use have made the patch morphology of most land types developed from a natural random to a sawtooth shape,and its spatial pattern evolved from a ruleset to a fragmented expansion.This reflects the continuous strengthening of human intervention in the process of regional development.Under the jurisdiction of Hantai District,the biggest change in landscape pattern is in Hanzhong City and Qili Town.The improved economy and increasing population and urbanization rate were the main factors that cause these changes.This research could provide necessary information for understanding the evolution mechanism of land resources in mountainous human settlements for mountainous areas with significant geomorphic differentiation. 展开更多

The complex and volatile international landscape has significantly impacted global grain supply security. This study uses a complex network analysis model to examine the evolution and trends of the global major grain trade from 1990 to 2020, focusing on network topology, centrality ranking, and community structure. There are three major findings. First, the global major grain trade network has expanded in scale, with a growing emphasis on diversification and balance. During the study period, the United States, Canada, China, and Brazil were the core nodes of the network. Grain-exporting countries were mainly situated in Asia, the Americas, and Europe, and importing countries in Asia, Africa, and Europe. Second, a significant increase in the number of high centrality countries with high export capacity occurred, benefiting from natural advantages such as fertile land and favorable climates. Third, the main global grain trade network is divided into four communities, with the Americas-Europe community being the largest and most widespread. The formation of the community pattern was influenced by geographic proximity, driven by the core exporting countries. Therefore, the world needs to enhance the existing trade model, promote the multi-polarization of the grain trade network, and establish a global vision for the future community. Countries and regions should participate actively in global grain trade security governance and institutional reform, expand trade links with other countries, and optimize import and export policies to reduce trade risks. 展开更多

As the system parameters change, different patterns are obtained from the period-doubling of kink-antikinks in space to the spatiotemporal chaos in a one-dimensional SCPCS. The homogeneous symmetric states induce symmetry breaking from the four corners and the boundaries, finally leading to spatiotemporal chaos with the increase of the iteration time in a two-dimensional SCPCS. This study utilized census data from Henan Province for the years 2000,2010,and 2020 to investigate the spatiotemporal evolution of population aging,defined by the proportion of the population aged 65 and above.Employing spatial analysis techniques such as spatial autocorrelation and the standard deviation ellipse,the research mapped out the progression and distribution of aging demographics.Furthermore,the study delved into the influencing factors of aging using an optimal parameters-based geographical detector.Results indicate a deepening degree of population aging in Henan Province,transitioning from an adult type to an old type structure.There is a marked positive spatial correlation among counties,with high-value aging areas initially decreasing,then increasing,and notably spreading from the central to the central and southern regions of the province.The center of gravity for population aging,specifically around Changge City and Xuchang City,exhibits a trajectory moving southeast before shifting northwest.Factor detection reveals that in 2000,2010,and 2020,the elderly dependency ratio predominantly influences the aging trend,with explanatory powers of 88.4%,87.9%,and 90.9%,respectively.Interaction analysis indicates that the interaction between the old-child ratio and the elderly dependency ratio has a strong explanatory power for the aging patterns in Henan Province,reaching 97.3%,97.0%,and 97.4%,respectively. 展开更多

As an important indicator of the structural and functional stability of wetland landscapes,hydrological connectivity plays an important role in maintaining the stability of wetland ecosystems.Large-scale human activities have led to significant changes in the hydrological connectivity pattern of wetlands in Naoli River Basin since 1950 s.Combined with the availability of wetland habitat and the spreading capacity of aquatic birds,hydrological connectivity indices of marsh wetlands were calculated in the studied area,and the temporal and spatial changes were analyzed from 1950 s to 2015.The results indicate that:(1)the hydrological connectivity index of the marsh wetlands shows a growth trend with increasing distance threshold.All patches of marsh wetlands linked together when the distance threshold reached 35--40 km;(2)the optimal distance of hydrological connectivity is about 10 km for marsh wetlands of whole Naoli River Basin;(3)the total hydrological connectivity of marsh wetlands decreased in the Naoli River Basin from 1950 s to 2015.Although the hydrological connectivity index increased after 2005,the fragmentation of the landscape has not been improved.The analysis of the wetland hydrological connectivity can provide a scientific basis for the ecological restoration and protection of the wetland in the Naoli River Basin. 展开更多

We use the directional slacks-based measure of efficiency and inverse distance weighting method to analyze the spatial pattern evolution of the industrial green total factor productivity of 108 cities in the Yangtze River Economic Belt in 2003–2013.Results show that both the subprime mortgage crisis and ‘the new normal' had significant negative effects on productivity growth,leading to the different spatial patterns between 2003–2008 and 2009–2013.Before 2008,green poles had gathered around some capital cities and formed a tripartite pattern,which was a typical core-periphery pattern.Due to a combination of the polarization and the diffusion effects,capital cities became the growth poles and ‘core' regions,while surrounding areas became the ‘periphery'.This was mainly caused by the innate advantage of capital cities and ‘the rise of central China' strategy.After 2008,the tripartite pattern changed to a multi-poles pattern where green poles continuously and densely spread in the midstream and downstream areas.This is due to the regional difference in the leading effect of green poles.The leading effect of green poles in midstream and downstream areas has changed from polarization to diffusion,while the polarization effect still leads in the upstream area. 展开更多

The Asteraceae capitulum,particularly a radiate capitulum with differing colors of ray and disc florets,resembles a solitary flower probably through adaption to animal pollination.A previous study found that the shape-color association in Chrysanthemum was due to co-option of the carotenoid-cleavage-dioxygenase gene CCD4a under regulation of the ray-floret identity CYC2g,a member of floral symmetry regulators CYCLOIDEA.Then questions arise:Is such a gene co-option specific to Chrysanthemum?Or did it originate earlier in the evolution of Chrysanthemum and allies?To answer these questions,we examined 11 species representing four color patterns of radiate capitula in the tribe Anthemideae,to which Chrysanthemum belongs.Comparative examinations of carotenoid content,expression patterns of CYC2-like and CCD-like genes along floret developments,and dual-luciferase assays showed that capitular color patterns were strongly correlated with patterns of carotenoid accumulation/degeneration.In the white-ray/yellow-disc species,both CYC2g and CCD4a were ray-specifically expressed and CYC2g can activate CCD4a;in the yellow-ray/yellow-disc species,CCD4a genes were either lost or repressed by CYC2g.The white discs of Achillea alpina must be due to other regulators activating CCD4a expression.The bicolor rays of Glebionis coronaria seemed to have complex color regulation probably due to redundant function of two CCD4a paralogs.In sum,the shape-color association of a radiate capitulum is evolutionarily conserved in the tribe Anthemideae,and the underpinning gene co-option of CCD4a into the floral symmetry regulation network probably arose before divergence of the tribes Anthemideae and Astereae as the divergence of CCD4 into CCD4a and CCD4b occurred at approximately that time. 展开更多

Sustainable development,underpinned by robust systemic driving forces,is central to the growth of high-quality tourism.Therefore,identifying these forces at the regional level is crucial for advancing China’s goal of becoming a leading nation for tourism.This study accordingly constructs a new evaluation system that covers tourism market demand,industry supply,and structural transformation,and analyzes data from 31 Chinese provincial regions(2010–2019).The entropy method and spatial autocorrelation analysis were applied to examine the driving forces for sustainable regional tourism development.The results revealed that:First,at the national level,the driving forces for sustainable regional tourism development exhibited a clear upward trend from 2010 to 2019,with an acceleration in growth after 2015.However,there was significant regional heterogeneity:The eastern region displayed the highest levels of driving forces,followed by the central and western regions.Second,high-value clusters of these driving forces expanded from the eastern to the western regions,while the central provinces remained relatively balanced.Specifically,provincial regions such as Guangdong,Beijing,and Zhejiang were able to successively enter the high-value clusters,whereas the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region,Gansu,and Qinghai consistently remained in the low-value clusters.Third,the driving forces exhibited a significant spatial agglomeration effect.The degree of clustering followed an inverted“U”trend over the study period,while the spatial patterns of the provincial regions remained relatively stable. 展开更多

Global production networks have become the most important organizational platforms for coordinating international production activities,and their evolution patterns profoundly affect value distribution across the world.In this study,we shall firstly carry out an in-depth quantitative research to analyze the patterns and evolution of global production networks,using a long time-sequenced multi-region input-output table and the network analysis approach.Then based on the method of value-added decomposition,we will develop an index system to measure the degree of participation of regions in global production networks.Finally,we will try to identify the factors affecting the degree of participation of countries in global production networks by constructing a regression model.The results show that from 1995 to 2015,the evolution of global production networks measured by input-output linkages experienced four stages:expansion,contraction,re-expansion,and re-contraction.In addition,the core communities of global production networks evolved from two major production communities(Europe and the Americas)to three pillars(Europe,Americas,and Asia)while more segmented communities are mainly affected by geographical proximity.The latter consists of European,North American,South American,African and Asian communities.The evolution of the global production network pattern primarily manifests as a process of cooperation strengthening or weakening among communities,based on changes in the external environment and the need for individual development strategies.Meanwhile,the United States,Germany,and the United Kingdom have consistently ranked among the top entities in global production networks,whereas China,Russia,and Southeast Asia have the fastest rises in ranking.In addition,government efficiency,resources endowment,infrastructure conditions and technology levels play important roles in the participation in global production networks. 展开更多

The use of territories in border areas is sensitive, unique, and ecologically fragile. A scientific understanding of the transformation of the national territorial space and its ecological and environmental responses is crucial for optimizing spatial patterns and promoting sustainable utilization. This study focused on 45 cities in the land border areas of China and employed techniques such as the land transfer matrix, Theil index, and ecological environment index to explore the spatiotemporal evolution process and eco-environmental effects of territorial space from three dimensions: spatial pattern, structural transformation, and ecological response. The results show that:(1) During the study period, there was an increasing trend in living and production space, along with a decrease in ecological space, and a significant pattern of "one belt, three districts, and multipoints" emerged.(2) In the urbanization process, population growth and industrial agglomeration have led to the transformation and conflict of territorial spaces, with the conversion of ecological spaces into production spaces being the primary form of land-use transformation. Rapid development has resulted in spatial differentiation of the territorial space between regions.(3) During this period, the ecological quality in China's border areas deteriorated, yet the distribution pattern of ecological space remained stable, exhibiting a “high value in the southeast, low value in the northwest” pattern.(4) Improvements and degradation of the ecology coexist in different border areas;transforming agricultural production space into green and potential ecological spaces has positively contributed to enhancing ecological quality. In contrast, converting green ecological space into potential ecological space, agricultural production space, and aquatic ecological space has become a key factor in ecological degradation. Therefore, the border areas of China should utilize national preferential policies and strategies, recognize the vast and varied expanse of China's border areas, and adopt differentiated planning and management measures in different regions to achieve the coordinated development of the PLES, thus promoting a positive trend in eco-environmental quality. 展开更多

The global value chains have become the core skeleton of the global economy.As a large-scale international cooperation initiative,the Belt and Road Initiative(BRI hereafter)may have a significant impact on the global economic landscape.In this context,the spatiotemporal pattern and evolution of the value chain connection of the Silk Road countries and whether the BRI will promote the value chain connections between China and these countries are important research questions for understanding the changing global economic landscape.This paper employs input-output analysis,network analysis and difference-in-differences based on Propensity Score Matching(PSM-DID)to conduct an in-depth quantitative study of these questions.The results show that,first,the overall value chain connection between China and the Silk Road countries has been rising since 2001.From the perspective of geographical distribution,Southeast Asia is the highest value chain connection region with China,and the growth in the central and eastern Europe is the most significant,whereas the central Asia is the lowest value connection region.From the perspective of complex network analysis,China’s position in the network of value flow among the Silk Road countries has been increasing continuously,and it has been in the lead position since 2008.Besides,the implementation of the BRI has had a significant positive influence on the overall value chain connection between China and the Silk Road countries,but this positive influence is limited to the central and eastern Europe region,whereas it is not significant in other regions.Finally,this paper suggests that to promote the development of value chain connection,the Silk Road countries need to develop more specific policies related to value chains.Policymakers need to be able to correctly identify the comparative advantages of the region and the types of value chains that are compatible with them and then find suitable partners and formulate targeted promotion policies. 展开更多

In this paper,the type,vertical evolution,and distribution pattern of sedimentary facies of the Paleogene Dainan Formation in the Gaoyou Depression of the North Jiangsu Basin are studied in detail.Results show that fan delta,delta,nearshore subaqueous fan,and lacustrine facies developed during the Dainan Formation period and their distribution pattern was mainly controlled by tectonics and paleogeography.The fan delta and nearshore subaqueous fan facies predominantly occur in the southern steep slope region where fault-induced subsidence is thought to have created substantial accommodation,whereas the delta facies are distributed on the northern gentle slope which is thought to have experienced less subsidence.Finally,the lacustrine facies is shown to have developed in the center of the depression,as well as on the flanks of the fan delta,delta,and nearshore subaqueous fan facies.Vertically,the Dainan Formation represents an integrated transgressiveregressive cycle,with the E2d1being the transgressive sequence and the E2d2being the regressive sequence.This distribution model of sedimentary facies plays an important role in predicting favorable reservoir belts for the Dainan Formation in the Gaoyou Depression and similar areas.In the Gaoyou Depression,sandstones of the subaqueous distributary channels in the fan delta and the subaqueous branch channels in the delta are characterized by physical properties favorable for reservoir formation. 展开更多
