Demands for low-energy microcontrollers have been increasing in recent years. Since most microcontrollers achieve user programmability by integrating nonvolatile (NV) memories such as flash memories for storing their programs, the large power consumption required in accessing an NV memory has become a major problem. This problem becomes critical when the power supply voltage of NV microcontrollers is decreased. We can solve this problem by introducing an instruction cache, thus reducing the access frequency of the NV memory. Unlike general-purpose microprocessors, microcontrollers used for real-time applications in embedded systems must accurately calculate program execution time prior to its execution. Therefore, we introduce a “transparent” instruction cache, which does not change the existing NV microcontroller’s cycle-level execution time, for reducing power and energy consumption, but not for improving the processing speed. We have conducted detailed microar chitecture design based on the architecture of a major industrial microcontroller, and we evaluated power and energy consumption for several benchmark programs. Our evaluation shows that the proposed instruction cache can successfully reduce energy consumption in a fairly wide range of practical NV microcontroller configurations. 展开更多

With its growth in spacecraft control applications,the microcontroller(MCU)becomes increasingly sensitive to radiation and the risks of system failure.In a radiation environment,the MCU is vulnerable to impacts from high-energy particles,which can lead to single-event effect(SEE)that disrupt normal system operations.The pipeline of MCU,being the core structure of the system,is particularly susceptible to single-event upset(SEU)and potentially causes execution failures.However,existing radiation-hardening techniques offer limited effectiveness for pipelines.To enhance SEU resistance,this study focused on a 32-bit MCU core with eight pipeline stages,proposing a pipeline hardening approach that utilizes lockstep technology to improve fault tolerance.Signals from two processors were compared including register write data,register contents and pre-fetched instructions.Any discrepancies triggered error flags to indicate faults.When an error flag was raised,recovery was initiated through an interrupt.The interrupt handler then retrieved state information from the advanced peripheral bus(APB)slave module to restore the CPU's operational state and resume execution.By combining hardware-based state preservation with software-driven error recovery,the proposed solution demonstrated significant improvements in fault tolerance rates and performance compared to traditional checkpoint-based techniques.After completing the pipeline hardening design,a fault injection platform was utilized in this paper to simulate real-world error conditions on internal processor modules.The platform was developed based on the circuit's register-transfer-level(RTL)design and statistical results.The fault injection platform was performed by automatically finding all registers within the target design.The register values were forced to upset at the tens of nanoseconds scale in the RTL description of the circuit's design.After running the circuit's functional simulation,the statistics of the faults in registers were displayed on the platform,which evaluated the influence of SEU.The vulnerability of SEU in the circuit could be observed from the results of the soft error statistics.The post-hardening soft error rates were then measured and compared to pre-hardening data,providing a quantitative evaluation of the improvements.Using this method,the soft error rates of the modules in the MCU core such as PFU,DPU,and Cache AXIM are 40.07%,26.36%,and 27.29%respectively before hardening.The soft error rates of modules mentioned above are reduced to 0%,0.69%,and 1.11%after hardening.The hardened and non-hardened designs of the entire core were implemented in FPGA.The total resource utilization of the triple mode redundancy(TMR)is 111984,as indicated by the number of look-up tables(LUTs)and registers consumed in the FPGA.The total resource utilization of this work is 78034,and the ratio of resource utilization between this work and TMR is approximately 69.68%.The error recovery time for the hardened MCU processor was analyzed using the completion cycles of a bubble sort algorithm as a benchmark.In this paper,the average recovery cycle using the software checkpoint roll-back method is 36479.06,and the average recovery cycle using this work is 26922.5.The ratio of recovery cycles between this work and checkpoint roll-back is about 73.8%.Assessments through random fault injection and FPGA implementation indicate that this approach effectively reduces processor faults caused by soft errors while optimizing resource utilization and efficiency over triplemodular redundancy. 展开更多

A traditional air blast sprayer typically relies on an additional operator to manage the positioning of the spray delivery pipe.To eliminate the need for a second operator,a microcontroller-based embedded system was developed and tested under laboratory conditions using a specialized setup.This system consisted of several components:a spray delivery pipe controller to regulate and rotate the spray delivery pipe based on signals received from the microcontroller,a signal generator to create signals by adjusting the lever via potentiometer R1 to specify the desired position of the spray delivery pipe,a mechanical position indicator to display the required or set location of the pipe and a microcontroller-based embedded system to process the signals generated by the signal generator and compare them with the current location signal.The embedded system then outputs a signal,which,when received by the motor,determines the angle and direction of rotation for the spray delivery pipe.This rotation is facilitated by the motor's command to rotate the ring gear through the rotation of the pinion gear,ultimately controlling the movement of the spray delivery pipe.The evaluation findings indicated that the developed system requires 36.48 s to execute a full rotation of the spray delivery pipe,with an angle error ranging from 0 to 2 degrees.Overall,the developed embedded system holds the potential to eliminate the need for a second operator,offering convenient management and control of the spray delivery pipe. 展开更多

This paper presents an advanced control strategy for DC-DC buck converters utilizing Non-Minimal State Space (NMSS) representation combined with Proportional-Integral-Plus (PIP) control, optimized through Linear Quadratic Regulator (LQR) design. The proposed approach leverages NMSS to eliminate the need for state observers, enhancing robustness against model mismatch and improving overall system performance. The PIP controller extends traditional PI control by incorporating additional dynamic feedback. Experimental results demonstrate that the NMSS-PIP-LQR controlled buck converter achieves excellent dynamic performance. Information from the brain travels back and forth along peripheral nerves in the form of electrical impulses generated by neurons and these impulses have repetitive patterns. Schwann cells in peripheral nerves receive molecular signals from axons to coordinate the process of myelination. There is evidence, however,that non-molecular signals play an important role in myelination in the form of patterned electrical impulses generated by neuronal activity. The role of patterned electrical impulses has been investigated in the literature using co-cultures of neurons and myelinating cells. The co-culturing method, however, prevents the uncoupling of the direct effect of patterned electrical impulses on myelinating cells from the indirect effect mediated by neurons. To uncouple these effects and focus on the direct response of Schwann cells,we developed an in vitro model where an electroconductive carbon fiber acts as an artificial axon. The fiber provides only the biophysical characteristics of an axon but does not contribute any molecular signaling.In our "suspended wire model", the carbon fiber is suspended in a liquid media supported by a 3D printed scaffold. Patterned electrical impulses are generated by an Arduino 101 microcontroller. In this study, we describe the technology needed to set-up and eventually replicate this model. We also report on our initial in vitro tests where we were able to document the adherence and ensheath of human Schwann cells to the carbon fiber in the presence of patterned electrical impulses(hSCs were purchased from ScienCell Research Laboratories, Carlsbad, CA, USA; ScienCell fulfills the ethic requirements, including donor's consent). This technology will likely make feasible to investigate the response of Schwann cells to patterned electrical impulses in the future. 展开更多

To promote the modeling standardization process of the integrated circuits, an improved electrical simulation model for a direct power injection (DPI) setup which was used to measure the conducted immunity of a 16-bit microcontroller to radio frequency aggression was investigated. Based on the existing model of the same microcontroller, the PDN module was modified by adding the core, PLL and MD network models, which could reflect the actual electric distribution situation within the microcontroller more accurately. By comparing the simulation results with the measurement results, the effectiveness of the modified model can be improved to 500 MHz, and its uncertainty is within +1.8 dB (+2 dB is acceptable). Then, to improve the simulation accuracy of the complete model in the high frequency range, the I/O model which contained the dynamic and nonlinear characteristics reflecting the variation of the internal impedance of the microcontroller with increasing the frequency of the external noise was introduced. By comparing the simulation results with the measurement results, the effectiveness of the second modified model can be improved up to 1.4 GHz with the uncertainty of ~1.8 dB. Thus, a conclusion can be reached that the proposed model can be applied to a much wider frequency range with a smaller uncertainty than the latest model of the similar type. Furthermore, associated with the electromagnetic emission testing platform model, the PDN module can also be used to predict the electromagnetic conducted and radiated emission characteristics. This modeling method can also be applied to other integrated circuits, which is very helpful to the standardization of the IC electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) modeling process. 展开更多

The intelligent temperature control system is divided into four parts: monitor,heater,controlled process and feedback loop. Among them,the temperature detection circuit is designed with the conductivity of water by sensor detection. The optical coupler MOC3041 is used to implement the power control circuit,whose control object is 1 kW electric heater with the 220 V alternating current power; keyboard and display circuit SMC1602A include four buttons and LCD display to achieve human-computer interaction; Based on single-chip system STC89C52,the sensor signal and keyboard set target temperature are compared to the power automatically in order to finish the water temperature control. Through the static and dynamic data testing,the results show that the proposed method provides an effective way to realize the real-time acquisition and control of temperature. 展开更多

This paper presents the experimental results of a combined irradiation environment of neutron and gamma rays on 80C196KC20, which is a 16-bit high performance member of the MCS96 microcontroller family. The electrical and functional tests were made in three irradiation environments: neutron, gamma rays, combined irradiation of neutron and gamma rays. The experimental results show that the neutron irradiation can affect the total ionizing dose behaviour. Compared with the single radiation environment, the microcontroller exhibits considerably more severe degradation in neutron and gamma ray synergistic irradiation. This phenomenon may cause a significant hardness assurance problem. 展开更多

Scientific research requires the collection of data in order to study, monitor, analyze, describe, or understand a particular process or event. Data collection efforts are often a compromise: manual measurements can be time-consuming and labor-intensive, resulting in data being collected at a low frequency, while automating the data-collection process can reduce labor requirements and increase the frequency of measurements, but at the cost of added expense of electronic data-collecting instrumentation. Rapid advances in electronic technologies have resulted in a variety of new and inexpensive sensing, monitoring, and control capabilities which offer opportunities for implementation in agricultural and natural-resource research applications. An Open Source Hardware project called Arduino consists of a programmable microcontroller development platform, expansion capability through add-on boards, and a programming development environment for creating custom microcontroller software. All circuit-board and electronic component specifications, as well as the programming software, are open-source and freely available for anyone to use or modify. Inexpensive sensors and the Arduino development platform were used to develop several inexpensive, automated sensing and datalogging systems for use in agricultural and natural-resources related research projects. Systems were developed and implemented to monitor soil-moisture status of field crops for irrigation scheduling and crop-water use studies, to measure daily evaporation-pan water levels for quantifying evaporative demand, and to monitor environmental parameters under forested conditions. These studies demonstrate the usefulness of automated measurements, and offer guidance for other researchers in developing inexpensive sensing and monitoring systems to further their research. 展开更多

Rapid advances in electronics and communications technologies offer continuously evolving options for sensing and awareness of the physical environment. Many of these advances are becoming increasingly available to “non-professionals,” that is, those without formal training or expertise in disciplines such as electronic engineering, computer programming, or physical sciences, via the open-source concept. The open-source concept of collaboration and sharing of ideas offers advantages including low cost, ease of use, extensive array of electronic technologies offered, and technical and programming support. Expansion of communications infrastructure, including wireless, cellular, and internet networks, continues to provide greater ability to be connected and share information over any distance in real time. A basic data-collection platform using open-source hardware and software and internet cloud components was developed and discussed. The simple and inexpensive platform was used to develop and implement an instrument system to remotely monitor soil-moisture status in agricultural fields. The monitoring system transferred data regularly from the field to an internet website via the cellular communications network. The system performed reliably over an entire growing season with no maintenance requirements. The basic platform can be modified to suit a user’s specific requirements, and offers options for automated collection, viewing, and sharing of remotely sensed data. 展开更多

A variety of sensing and monitoring systems have been developed based on the concept of open-source and on open-source hardware and software components. Availability and relatively low cost of hardware components and availability and ease of use of software components allow access to sensing and monitoring technologies that were previously unattainable to many potential users. Advances in electronic monitoring and evolving cellular communications technologies are increasingly offering more, simpler, and less expensive options for remote monitoring. Due to the near-future cessation of 2G and 3G cellular network services, however, many existing monitoring systems will need to be redesigned to operate on alternative cellular networks. A soil-moisture monitoring system was developed incorporating updated open-source Arduino microcontrollers and the recently introduced LTE Cat-M1 cellular network to transmit sensor measurements via the cellular network for access on an internet website. The monitoring system costs approximately US$130 to construct the electronic circuitry and less than US$1 per month for cellular network access and data transmission. Data were transmitted with a 95% success rate, and the monitoring system operated continuously throughout an entire crop growing season with no battery recharge or maintenance requirements. The design and operation of the monitoring system can serve as a basis for other remote monitoring systems. 展开更多

Many agricultural applications, including improved crop production, precision agriculture, and phenotyping, rely on detailed field and crop information to detect and react to spatial variabilities. Mobile farm vehicles, such as tractors and sprayers, have the potential to operate as mobile sensing platforms, enabling the collection of large amounts of data while working. Open-source hardware and software components were integrated to develop a mobile plant-canopy sensing and monitoring system. The microcontroller-based system, which incorporated a Bluetooth radio, GPS receiver, infrared temperature and ultrasonic distance sensors, micro SD card storage, and voltage regulation components, was developed at a cost of US$292. The system was installed on an agricultural vehicle and tested in a soybean field. The monitoring system demonstrates an application of open-source hardware to agricultural research and provides a framework for similar or additional sensing applications. 展开更多
