Rock brittleness is a critical property in geotechnical and energy engineering,as it directly influences the prediction of rock failure and stability assessment.Although numerous methods have been developed to evaluate brittleness, many fail to comprehensively account for the impacts of microstructural changes, mineralogical characteristics, and stress conditions on energy evolution during failure. This study proposes a novel approach for brittleness evaluation based on the energy evolution throughout the post-peak failure process, integrating two micromechanical mechanisms:crack propagation and frictional sliding.A new brittleness index is defined as the ratio of generated surface energy to released elastic energy, providing a unified framework for assessing both Class I and Class II mechanical behaviors. The brittleness of cyan, white, and gray sandstones was investigated under various confining pressures and moisture conditions using X-ray diffraction(XRD),scanning electron microscopy(SEM),and conventional triaxial compression(CTC)tests. The results demonstrate that brittleness decreases with increasing confining pressure, due to suppressed crack propagation, and increases under saturated conditions,as moisture enhances crack propagation.By establishing connections between mineral composition, microstructural features, and stress-induced responses, the proposed method overcame limitations of previous approaches and offered a more precise tool for evaluating rock brittleness under diverse environmental scenarios. 展开更多

Mahu Sag,located in Junggar Basin,China,is the largest conglomerate oil reservoir in the world(in this paper, conglomerate generally refers to rocks containing gravel, including pebbly sandstone, sand conglomerate, and conglomerate). The reservoir has the characteristics of low porosity and low permeability and needs hydraulic fracturing. The micromechanical properties and rock fracture characteristics are studied to provide a theoretical basis for hydraulic fracturing treatment. In this study, the mechanical properties, micromechanical properties, fracture characteristics, and micromechanical mechanism of conglomerate are studied experimentally.Assuming that the gravel size is constant, conglomerate with the same cementation type has the following rules:When the gravel content(GC)is≤40%,the rock fracture is controlled by Orowan additional stress, and the strength of miscellaneous foundation is the key factor, forming a single fracture with high tortuosity. When the GC is 40%–65%,the GC and cementation strength are the key factors of rock fracture, resulting in the fracture network around the gravel. When the GC is≥65%,the rock fracture is controlled by Hertz contact stress. The GC is the key factor.Surrounding gravel and passing through gravel cracks are developed, resulting in complex fracture network, but the transformation scale of fracture network is small.Through this study, the fracture morphology and key factors of conglomerate fracture are explored, which can provide reference for hydraulic fracturing. 展开更多

To understand the specific behaviors of coastal coral sand slope foundations, discrete element method(DEM)was employed to examine the effect of breakable particle corners on the performance of coral sand slope foundations under a strip footing, from macro to micro scales. The results demonstrate that the bearing characteristics of coral sand slope foundations can be successfully modeled by utilizing breakable corner particles in simulations. The dual effects of interlocking and breakage of corners well explained the specific shallower load transmission and narrower shear stress zones in breakable corner particle slopes.Additionally, the study revealed the significant influence of breakable corners on soil behaviors on slopes.Furthermore, progressive corner breakage within slip bands was successfully identified as the underling mechanism in determining the unique bearing characteristics and the distinct failure patterns of breakable corner particle slopes. This study provides a new perspective to clarify the behaviors of slope foundations composed of breakable corner particle materials. 展开更多

This study is devoted to a novel fractional friction-damage model for quasi-brittle rock materials subjected to cyclic loadings in the framework of micromechanics. The total damage of material describing the microstructural degradation is decomposed into two parts:an instantaneous part arising from monotonic loading and a fatigue-related one induced by cyclic loading, relating to the initiation and propagation of microcracks. The inelastic deformation arises directly from frictional sliding along microcracks, inherently coupled with the damage effect.A fractional plastic flow rule is introduced using stress-fractional plasticity operations and covariant transformation approach, instead of classical plastic flow function.Additionally, the progression of fatigue damage is intricately tied to subcracks and can be calculated through application of a convolution law.The number of loading cycles serves as an integration variable, establishing a connection between inelastic deformation and the evolution of fatigue damage. In order to verify the accuracy of the proposed model, comparison between analytical solutions and experimental data are carried out on three different rocks subjected to conventional triaxial compression and cyclic loading tests. The evolution of damage variables is also investigated along with the cumulative deformation and fatigue lifetime. The improvement of the fractional model is finally discussed by comparing with an existing associated fatigue model in literature. 展开更多

The grout-rock interfacial property is one of the key factors associated with the strength of grouted rock masses. In this study, direct shear tests and nanoindentation tests were adopted to investigate the mechanical properties of the grout-rock interface at both the macroscale and microscale. The cohesion of the cement specimens was higher than that of the grout-infilled joint specimens, while their internal friction angle was lower than that of the grout-infilled joint specimens.A“separation method”for identifying the different phases according to the qualitative and quantitative estimations was introduced, and the irregular interfacial transition zone(ITZ)thickness and elastic modulus were estimated. The ITZ thickness of the grout-infilled sandstone specimen ranged from 0 to 30μm,whereas it was within the range of 10-40μm for the grout-infilled mudstone specimen. The average elastic modulus of the ITZ in grout-infilled sandstone and mudstone specimens was approximately 58.2%and 54.1%lower than that of the bulk grout, respectively.Regarding the incidence of the rock type, the interlacing between the grout and sandstone was better developed. The ITZ with a higher porosity and lower modulus had a significant effect on the mechanical properties of the grout-infilled specimens. 展开更多

By taking the frozen soil as a particle-reinforced composite material which consists of clay soil (i.e., the matrix) and ice particles, a micromechanical constitutive model is established to describe the dynamic compressive deformation of frozen soil. The proposed model is constructed by referring to the debonding damage theory of composite materials, and addresses the effects of strain rate and temperature on the dynamic compressive deformation of frozen soil. The proposed model is verified through comparison of the predictions with the corresponding dynamic experimental data of frozen soil obtained from the split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) tests at different high strain rates and temperatures. It is shown that the predictions agree well with the experimental results. 展开更多

This paper examines the longitudinal tensile behavior and failure mechanism of a new unidirectional carbon fiber reinforced aluminum composite through experiments and simulations.A Weibull distribution model was established to describe the fiber strength dispersion based on single-fiber tensile tests for carbon fibers extracted from the composite. The constitutive models for the matrix and interface were established based on the uniaxial tensile and single-fiber push-out tests, respectively. Then,a 3D micromechanical numerical model, innovatively considering the fiber strength dispersion by use of the weakest link and Weibull distribution theories, was estab-lished to simulate the progressive failure behavior of the composite under longitudinal tension.Due to the dispersion of fiber strength, the weakest link of the fiber first fractures, and stress concentra-tion occurs in the surrounding fibers, interfaces, and matrix. The maximum stress concentration fac-tor for neighboring fibers varies nonlinearly with the distance from the fractured fiber. Both isolated and clustered fractured fibers are present during the progressive failure process of the composite. The expansion of fractured fiber clusters intensifies stress concentration and material degradation which in turn enlarges the fractured fiber clusters, and their mutual action leads to the final collapse of the composite. 展开更多

A plate of dual phase steel was produced from low carbon steel with intercritical annealing treatment. Its optically determined surface microstructure was utilized to construct three different microstructural models. To describe the ductile damage in the ferritic matrix, the Gurson-Tvergaard-Needleman model was used with the failure in the martensite phase being ignored. The numerical results obtained for the mechanism of void initiation and coalescence were compared with the experimental observations. The numerical results obtained from the randomly extruded 3D model showed a significantly better agreement with the experimental ones than those obtained from the 2D model or the uniformly extruded 3D model. 展开更多

Enzyme-induced carbonate precipitation(EICP)has emerged as an innovative soil stabilization technology to precipitate CaCO3by catalyzing urea decomposition.Although extensive efforts have been made to increase the calcium carbonate content(CCC)formed in the EICP process for the better biocementation effect, the cementability and micromechanical properties of CaCO3are rarely known.A study of the cementitious characteristics and micromechanical properties of CaCO3precipitates with different mixing percentages of crystal morphology is essential for soil improvement. In the present study, ultrasonic oscillation tests and nanoindentation tests were performed to investigate the cementability and micromechanical properties of CaCO3precipitate.The results show that the cementability and micromechanical properties of CaCO3precipitate are related to the composition of the crystal morphology.A high content of calcite is beneficial to improve the adhesion of calcium carbonate precipitate.Calcite has better mechanical properties(elastic modulus, hardness and ductility)than vaterite, and the presence of vaterite can significantly affect the measured value of mechanical properties in nanoindentation tests. The ductility of CaCO3precipitate induced by crude soybean urease(CSU)is higher than that of CaCO3precipitate induced by commercially available pure enzyme, suggesting that commercially available pure enzyme can be replaced by CSU for cost-effective field-scale engineering applications. This work can provide insight into optimizing the properties of CaCO3precipitate from the micro-scale. 展开更多

In this paper, the microstructure evolution of the rapidly solidified (RS) Mg61.7Zn34Gd4.3 (at%, atomic ratio) alloy at high temperatures was investigated. The hardness and elastic modulus of the main precipitated phases were also analyzed and compared with those of the α-Mg matrix on the basis of nanoindentation tests. The results show that the RS alloy consists of either a petal-like icosahedral quasicrystal (IQC) phase (~20 μm) and block-shaped H1 phase (~15 μm) or IQC particles with an average grain size of ~107 nm as well as a small proportion of amorphous phase, which mainly depends on the holding time at the liquid temperature and the thickness of the ribbons. The IQC phase gradually transforms at 400?C to a short-rod-shaped μ-phase (Mg28.6Zn63.8Gd7.7) with a hexagonal structure. The hardness of the IQC phase is higher than that of H1 phase, and both phases exhibit a higher hardness than the α-Mg matrix and the μ-phase. The elasticity of the H1 phase is superior to that of the α-Mg matrix. The IQC phase possesses a higher elastic modulus than H1 phase. The easily formed H1 phase exhibits the poorest plastic deformation capacity among these phases but a higher elastic modulus than the α-Mg matrix. 展开更多

In this work, a set of GTN (Gurson-Tvergaard-Needleman) parameters of the Alloy52M dissimilar metal welded joint (DMWJ) have been calibrated, and a micromechanical analysis of in-plane constraint effects on the local fracture behavior of two cracks, which located in the weakest regions of the DMWJ, has been investigated by the local approach based on the GTN damage model. The results show that the partition of the material and the variation of the q2 parameter make the J-resistance curves obtained by numerical simulations close to the experimental values. The numerical J-resistance curves and crack growth paths are consistent with the experiment results, which show that the GTN damage model can incorporate the in-plane constraint effect. Furthermore, after the stress, strain and damage fields at the crack tip during the crack propagation process have been calculated, and the change of the J-resistance curves, crack growth paths and fracture mechanism with in-plane constraint have been analyzed. 展开更多

The worldwide incidence rate of spinal cord injury (SCI) ranges from 250,000 to 900,000 (www.who.int, 2013;Kumar et al., 2018) new cases per year. SCI outcome includes the damage of axons, demyelination of axons, loss of signal transduction, and consequential long-lasting motor and sensory deficits. The high-temperature creep behavior of asphalt mixture was investigated based on micromechanical modeling and virtual test by using three-dimensional discrete element method(DEM). A user-defined micromechanical model of asphalt mixture was established after analyzing the irregular shape and gradation of coarse aggregates, the viscoelastic property of asphalt mastic, and the random distribution of air voids within the asphalt mixture. Virtual uniaxial static creep test at 60 ℃ was conducted by using Particle Flow Code in three dimensions(PFC3D) and was validated by laboratory test. Based on virtual creep test, the micromechanical characteristics between aggregates, within asphalt mastic, and between aggregate and asphalt mastic were analyzed for the asphalt mixture. It is proved that the virtual test based on the micromechanical model can efficiently predict the creep deformation of asphalt mixture. And the high-temperature behavior of asphalt mixture was characterized from micromechanical perspective. 展开更多

A progressive micromechanical method is presented in order to predict the elastic constants of polydispersed composites including multi-directional or randomly ori- ented reinforcement particles. Heterogeneities of various types are introduced into the matrices in a gradual manner. At each step, the Mori-Tanaka method is used to ob- tain the stiffness tensor of the intermediate medium used as a matrix of the following step. The proposed method is capable of introducing any kind of heterogeneities based on their dimensions, orientations, mechanical properties, and volume fractions to the ma- trix. Furthermore, suitable probability density functions can be defined for physical and structural parameters of the composite, including the level of the filler-matrix interfacial bonding, the aspect ratio, and the orientation of reinforcement particles. The efficiency of the iterative approach and the convergence of the solution are studied by computing the stiffness tensors of unidirectional and bidirectional particulate composites. The constitutive behavior of microcrystals remains mysterious since very little,or no information regarding plastic deformation in the measured stress-strain curve is available due to plastic instability.Furthermore, the measured stress-strain curves vary greatly under different control modes, while constitutive behavior should remain unaffected by test methods.Beyond these reasons, probing the real constitutive behavior of microcrystals has long been a challenge because the nonlinear dynamical behaviors of micromechanical testing systems are unclear. Here,we perform and carefully analyze the experiments on singlecrystal aluminum micropillars under displacement control and load control. To interpret these experimental results,a lumpedparameter physical model based on the principle of micromechanical testing is developed, which can directly relate nonlinear dynamics of the micromechanical testing system to the constitutive behavior of microcrystals. This reveals that some stages of the measured stress-strain curve attributed to the control algorithm are not related to constitutive behavior.By solving the nonlinear dynamics of the micromechanical testing system, intense plastic instability(large strain burst)starting from the equilibrium state is attributed to the strain-softening stage of microcrystals.Parametric studies are also performed to reduce the influence of plastic instability on the measured responses. This study provides critical insights for developing various constitutive models and designing a reliable micromechanical testing system. 展开更多

The investigation focusing on the mechanical behaviors at the microstructural level in composite materials can provide valuable insight into the failure mechanisms at larger scales.A micromechanics damage model which comprises the coupling of the matrix constitutive model and the cohesive zone(CZM)model at fiber-matrix interfaces is presented to evaluate the transverse tensile damage behaviors of unidirectional(UD)fiber-reinforced polymer(FRP)composites. For the polymeric matrix that exhibits highly non-linear mechanical responses, special focus is paid on the formulation of the constitutive model, which characterizes a mixture of elasticity, plasticity as well as damage. The proposed constitutive model includes the numerical implementation of a fracture plane based ellipse-parabola criterion that is an extension of the classic Mohr-Coulomb criterion, corresponding post-yield flow rule and post-failure degradation rule in the fully implicit integration scheme. The numerical results are in good agreement with experimental measurements. It is found that directly using the matrix properties measured at the ply level to characterize the mechanical responses at the constituent level may bring large discrepancies in homogenized stress-strain responses and dominant failure mechanisms. The distribution of fracture plane angles in matrix is predicted, where it is shown to provide novel insight into the microscopic damage initiation and accumulation under transverse tension. 展开更多

High-entropy alloys(HEAs)possess outstanding features such as corrosion resistance, irradiation resistance, and good mechan-ical properties.A few HEAs have found applications in the fields of aerospace and defense.Extensive studies on the deformation mech-anisms of HEAs can guide microstructure control and toughness design, which is vital for understanding and studying state-of-the-art structural materials.Synchrotron X-ray and neutron diffraction are necessary techniques for materials science research, especially for in situ coupling of physical/chemical fields and for resolving macro/microcrystallographic information on materials.Recently, several re-searchers have applied synchrotron X-ray and neutron diffraction methods to study the deformation mechanisms, phase transformations, stress behaviors, and in situ processes of HEAs,such as variable-temperature,high-pressure,and hydrogenation processes. In this review, the principles and development of synchrotron X-ray and neutron diffraction are presented, and their applications in the deformation mechanisms of HEAs are discussed. The factors that influence the deformation mechanisms of HEAs are also outlined. This review fo-cuses on the microstructures and micromechanical behaviors during tension/compression or creep/fatigue deformation and the application of synchrotron X-ray and neutron diffraction methods to the characterization of dislocations, stacking faults, twins, phases, and intergrain/interphase stress changes.Perspectives on future developments of synchrotron X-ray and neutron diffraction and on research directions on the deformation mechanisms of novel metals are discussed. 展开更多
