As one of the first items inscribed on China's national list of intangible cultural heritage,Sichuan opera possesses profound cultural connotations and significant cross-cultural communication potential by virtue of its unique visual symbol system, including facial makeup, stylized movements, and costumes. Its widespread dissemination within China has demonstrated its value as a cultural resource and a vehicle of cultural soft power. However,in the process of overseas communication,Sichuan opera faces a core contradiction between enhanced visibility and insufficient comprehension of meaning. While stunts like face-changing and fire-spitting easily create visual spectacles, deeper elements, such as the symbolic meanings of facial makeup colors, the logic of stylized movement codes, the virtual stage space, and the ethical core of the plots, are often inadequately decoded by overseas audiences due to symbolic barriers and cultural context differences. This results in an imbalance between the breadth of communication and the depth of audience understanding.Using information-based iconology as the core framework, this study explores how the core symbols of Sichuan opera can help overseas audiences overcome barriers to symbolic interpretation and address semantic discontinuities.Furthermore, case studies reveal that the cultural specificity of Sichuan opera's native visual symbols, combined with the integration of diverse attributes through re-encoding during communication, can effectively capture the attention of overseas audiences.Accordingly, this paper proposes a structured five-stage communication pathway comprising the establishment of an information-based iconology system, the empowerment and extraction of core symbols, layered visual translation,scenario-based communication, and audience participation and feedback. This study contributes an analytical framework and practical insights into the visual translation and international communication of Sichuan opera and other forms of traditional Chinese theater. 展开更多

As core enablers of new quality productive forces, technologies are reshaping the inheritance and development of intangible cultural heritage. This study, focusing on Sichuan opera, performs a procedural grounded theory analysis on a qualitative dataset of 211,396 Chinese characters derived from semi-structured interviews with 22 professionals from Sichuan opera troupes and 127 official media reports.Using a three-level coding system,we identified five major categories:cultural DNA revitalization,technology-driven innovation, industry ecosystem reconstruction, synergistic governance safeguards, and innovative international dissemination.Based on these categories, this study developed a theoretical framework for revitalizing Sichuan opera's cultural DNA.In this framework, cultural DNA revitalization serves as the foundation,technology-driven innovation functions as a catalyst, industry ecosystem reconstruction provides an impetus for transformation, synergistic governance guarantee offers institutional support, and innovative international dissemination represents an external driving force. The study finds that the empowerment of Sichuan opera by digital and intelligent technologies is not a unidirectional,technology-driven process, but a two-way interaction between cultural subjectivity and the instrumental role of technology.Currently, the digital transformation of Sichuan opera faces challenges such as fragmented technology adoption,a lagging governance system, and a significant cultural discount in international dissemination. Therefore,a comprehensive governance framework should be established, encompassing multi-stakeholder collaboration in intangible cultural heritage safeguarding, systematic institutional support, technological risk management, the cultivation of a new generation of professionals, and the global communication of cultural values. These findings provide a replicable and practical pathway for the digital and intelligent transformation of Chinese opera. 展开更多

Facing the dual challenges of globalization and digitalization, the intangible cultural heritage of Han Opera encounters“cultural discount”and“intergenerational gap”in its cross-cultural communication, while the traditional one-way communication model fails to meet the needs of contemporary audiences. This study aims to explore, within the metaverse framework, how to use Virtual Reality(VR)technology to reconstruct the communication pathways of Han Opera in order to promote its global cultural identity.By employing literature review and questionnaire survey methods,it conducts an in-depth analysis of the current state of audience awareness and experiential needs. The research develops a“VR-empowered strategy model for the cross-cultural dissemination of intangible cultural heritage”,proposing media reconstruction across four key dimensions:immersive storytelling, interactive experiences, cultural translation, and matrix-based dissemination. The strategy advocates for an“authentic core with innovative outward expression”,effectively enabling the transformation of audience engagement from merely“watching for entertainment”to“understanding the deeper significance”.This approach provides both theoretical references and practical guidance for the digital“going global”of intangible cultural heritage. 展开更多

Within the highly fluid cultural configuration of globalization, traditional local operatic forms generally confront multiple pressures, including the contraction of spaces for dissemination, aesthetic marginalization, and intergenerational rupture. Taking Baling Opera of Yueyang, Hunan, China, as an example, its cultural condition is particularly emblematic. As a local operatic genre deeply rooted in the regional social structure and folk ritual system of the Dongting Lake area, it has neither entered the system of digital dissemination, nor garnered extensive attention within the national structure of cultural consumption, nor been incorporated into any cross-cultural chain. This condition of “not having entered the modern communication system” enables Baling Opera to exhibit a distinctive cultural resilience. Relying on local dialect, embodied techniques, and communal memory, it has formed a low-frequency yet continuous cultural cycle within the regional field, and its vitality is derived primarily from the support of traditional festivals, master-disciple transmission, and local emotional attachment. This study takes Bourdieu’s field theory as its analytical framework and, in conjunction with theories of cultural reproduction and locality, explores the multiple positions of Baling Opera within the local field, regional networks, and the framework of national culture. 展开更多

This study explores the intricate symbiotic relationship between the Cantonese tonal system and Cantonese opera through an interdisciplinary lens of linguistics and musicology.Cantonese, with its complex tonal architecture and unique phonetic characteristics, serves not only as a communicative medium but as a structural blueprint for the melodic and rhythmic composition of Cantonese opera.Through historical tracing, phonological analysis, and performative interpretation, the paper examines how tonal contours directly shape vocal techniques, emotional expression, and narrative cadence within the opera tradition. The research further investigates how socio-cultural factors—ranging from regional identity, migration, and colonial modernity to contemporary digital transmission—have mediated the evolution and resilience of this art form.By demonstrating how linguistic tone and musical tune co-construct aesthetic experience and cultural memory, the paper offers a new theoretical model for understanding language-music co-evolution in tonal cultures. This inquiry not only affirms Cantonese opera’s role as a living archive of regional identity but also proposes strategies for its revitalization amidst the shifting conditions of modernity and globalization. 展开更多

Zhuge Liang was an eminent and universally known historical figure whose name is familiar to almost every household. He possessed exceptional talents in many areas and made significant contributions, particularly in politics, military affairs, and diplomacy. In historical records,Zhuge Liang was regarded as a statesman skilled in military administration rather than unconventional stratagems, and more proficient in civil governance than in battlefield command-an internal affairs expert described as“strong in pacifying the state and managing the army, but less given to extraordinary schemes, and better at governing the people than leading troops”.Among the general public, however, his image transformed into an almost deified and omniscient figure, one who could“make impeccable plans and even summon the wind and rain”.This contrast reflects the significant evolution of Zhuge Liang’s image. This dissertation focuses on the image of Zhuge Liang as portrayed in Ming Dynasty Three Kingdoms operas, analyzes the reasons for the transformation of his image, and attempts to offer modest supplementary insights based on previous research. 展开更多
