The form of an icebreaker bow is numerically optimized using a platform that relies on three methods ship geometry morphing under a fully parameterized modeling approach,a cyclic process of contact compression bending failure to calculate the icebreaking loads, and a differential evolution algorithm for optimization. The main objectives of this study are to optimize the total resistance and the average pressure in the ice zone.Surface sensitivity analysis based on an adjoint solver is used to identify the most significant regions of the hull. The hull in these regions is then formed using a cubic nonuniform rational B-spline technique. The differential evolution algorithm is employed to optimize the objectives associated with the hull form and determine the corresponding optimized variables. The optimal values are obtained by comparing the Pareto optimal designs. The optimization results show that the acquired hull form reduces the total resistance by 4.2%and decreases the average pressure in the ice zone by 0.6%.The main modifications introduced by the optimization process are to increase the buttock angle and the waterline angle. 展开更多

The human ear is one of the most vulnerable organs to blast damage in modern warfare. The accurate prediction of blast wave effects on the ear has become a key challenge in auditory trauma research.A lumped parameter(LP)model, with parameters optimized using a genetic algorithm,is developed to efficiently predict the middle ear's dynamic response to blast waves. The model accurately predicts tympanic membrane(TM)and stapes responses, particularly the first peak.Frequency-domain displacement and sensitivity analyses show that the middle ear responses are concentrated in a low-frequency range, with the blast wave amplitude significantly influencing the while stapes responses are more sensitive at lower frequencies. This method achieves competitive accuracy and high computational efficiency.Based on this model,a risk index based on stapes displacements is proposed to optimize and evaluate hearing protection systems. 展开更多

Simple parameterized models, either whole mantle convection or layered mantleconvection, cannot explain the tectonic characteristics of the Earth's evolution history, therefore a mixed mantle convection model has been carried out in this paper. We introduce a time-dependent parameter F, which denotes the ratio betWeen the mantle material involved in whole mantle convection and the material of the entire mantle, and introduce a local Rayleigh number Raloc as well as two critical numbers Ra1 and Ra2. These parameters are used to describe the stability of the phase boundary between the upper and lower mantle. The result shows that the mixed mantle convection model is able to simulate the episodic tectonic evolution of the Earth. 展开更多

The constitutive model is essential for predicting the deformation and stability of rocksoil mass. The estimation of constitutive model parameters is a necessary and important task for the reliable characterization of mechanical behaviors. However, constitutive model parameters cannot be evaluated accurately with a limited amount of test data, resulting in uncertainty in the prediction of stress-strain curves. This paper proposes a Bayesian analysis framework to address this issue. It combines the Bayesian updating with the structural reliability and adaptive conditional sampling methods to assess the equation parameter of constitutive models.Based on the triaxial and ring shear tests on shear zone soils from the Huangtupo landslide,a statistical damage constitutive model and a critical state hypoplastic constitutive model were used to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed framework. Moreover, the parameter uncertainty effects of the damage constitutive model on landslide stability were investigated. Results show that reasonable assessments of the constitutive model parameter can be well realized. The variability of stress-strain curves is strongly related to the model prediction performance. The estimation uncertainty of constitutive model parameters should not be ignored for the landslide stability calculation. Our study provides a reference for uncertainty analysis and parameter assessment of the constitutive model. 展开更多

Cycling as a sustainable mode of transport has become more prominent in urban settings. However, the design of bicycle infrastructure, particularly the setup of guardrails, directly impacts cyclists'sense of security and comfort. This study assessed cyclists'preferences for different types of guardrails and how these guardrails influence perceived safety and comfort through a stated choice experiment.Cyclists were asked to choose among stepping stone guardrails, metal guardrails, and warning post guardrails under varying hypothetical scenarios, considering factors such as colored pavements, traffic volume, weather, and vehicle type of adjacent lanes.A random parameter utility model and random parameter regret model were adopted to explore the possible factors and choice of guardrails. The results revealed that increases in traffic volume and changes in colored pavements significantly heightened the likelihood of choosing warning post guardrails, indicating that cyclists prefer guardrails that offer a higher sense of security in areas with dense traffic. Moreover, younger cyclists and those with higher educational levels exhibited a preference for warning post guardrails, reflecting their greater safety needs and sensitivity to traffic environments. These findings provide empirical support for urban bicycle lane design and offer insights for the formulation of effective urban traffic safety policies. 展开更多

Drought is among the most destructive and recurrent natural disasters worldwide. In recent decades, the frequency of drought events has increased, exerting significant impacts on socioeconomic development. The propagation of meteorological drought(MD)to soil moisture drought(SMD)is a common natural process;however, its dynamics across different seasons and vegetation types on the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau,as well as the underlying meteorological driving mechanisms, remain insufficiently understood. This study utilized precipitation and soil moisture data from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts(ECMWF)Reanalysis v5(ERA5)-Land reanalysis dataset for the period 1982–2022.The standardized precipitation index(SPI)and standardized soil moisture index(SSMI)were employed to characterize MD and SMD,respectively.By integrating run theory with an optimal parameter geographical detector(OPGD)model, this study systematically analyzed the average duration and propagation time of MD and SMD across the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau, and quantitatively evaluated the explanatory power of various meteorological and topographical factors influencing drought propagation. The results indicated that the mean duration of SMD across the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau from 1982 to 2022 was generally longer than that of MD.Significant seasonal differences in propagation time were observed, with the average propagation time ranked as winter(21 d)>spring(14 d)>autumn(10 d)>summer(8 d).Spatial variability of propagation time was more pronounced in spring and winter than in summer and autumn.Furthermore, the analysis of driving mechanisms revealed that drought propagation from MD to SMD on the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau was primarily influenced by precipitation(relative contribution proportion of 51.9%),followed by evaporation(15.1%)and snowmelt(13.6%),with the strongest interaction effects associated with precipitation.Although the dominant factors across different vegetation types were generally consistent with those for the entire plateau, solar radiation also showed a relatively high contribution(average 13.9%)across vegetation types. In summary, this study provides a scientific basis for improving drought early warning systems and optimizing water resource management strategies. 展开更多

Three degrees of freedom (3-DOF) Helmholtz resonator which consists of three cylindrical necks and cavities connected in series (neck-cavity-neck-cavity-neck-cavity) is suitable to reduce flow pulsation in hydraulic system. A novel lumped parameter model (LPM) of 3-DOF Helmholtz resonator in hydraulic system is developed which considers the viscous friction loss of hy- draulic fluid in the necks. Applying the Newton's second law of motion to the equivalent mechanical model of the resonator, closed-form expression of transmission loss and resonance frequency is presented. Based on the LPM, an optimal design method which employs rotate vector optimization method (RVOM) is proposed. The purpose of the optimal design is to search the reso- nator's unknown parameters so that its resonance frequencies can coincide with the pump-induced flow pulsation harmonics respectively. The optimal design method is realized to design 3-DOF Helmholtz resonator for a certain type of aviation piston pump hydraulic system. The optimization result shows the feasibility of this method, and the simulation under optimum parame- ters reveals that the LPM can get the same precision as transfer matrix method (TMM). 展开更多

Firstly, the research progress of grey model GM (1,1) is summarized, which is divided into three development stages: assimilation, alienation and melting stages. Then, the matrix analysis theory is used to study the modeling mechanism of GM (1,1), which decomposes the modeling data matrix into raw data transformation matrix, accumulated generating operation matrix and background value selection matrix. The changes of these three matrices are the essential reasons affecting the modeling and the accuracy of GM (1,1). Finally, the paper proposes a generalization grey model GGM (1,1), which is a extended form of GM (1,1) and also a unified form of model GM (1,1), model GM (1,1,α), stage grey model, hopping grey model, generalized accumulated model, strengthening operator model, weakening operator model and unequal interval model. Parameterization is a critical step in modelling ecosystem dynamics. However, assigning parameter values can be a technical challenge for structurally complex natural plant communities;uncertainties in model simulations often arise from inappropriate model parameterization. Here we compared five methods for defining community-level specific leaf area(SLA)and leaf C:N across nine contrasting forest sites along the North-South Transect of Eastern China, including biomass-weighted average for the entire plant community(AP_BW)and four simplified selective sampling(biomass-weighted average over five dominant tree species[5DT_BW],basal area weighted average over five dominant tree species[5DT_AW],biomass-weighted average over all tree species[AT_BW]and basal area weighted average over all tree species[AT_AW]).We found that the default values for SLA and leaf C:N embedded in the Biome-BGC v4.2 were higher than the five computational methods produced across the nine sites, with deviations ranging from 28.0 to 73.3%.In addition, there were only slight deviations(<10%)between the whole plant community sampling(AP_BW)predicted NPP and the four simplified selective sampling methods, and no significant difference between the predictions of AT_BW and AP_BW except the Shennongjia site. The findings in this study highlights the critical importance of computational strategies for community-level parameterization in ecosystem process modelling, and will support the choice of parameterization methods. 展开更多

To investigate the dynamic characteristics and damping theory of the passive hydraulic engine mount (PHEM), numerical prediction is performed through lumped parameter model. System parameters, including volume compliance of the decoupler chamber, effective piston area, fluid inertia and resistance of inertia track and direct-decoupler, are identified by means of experiments and finite element method (FEM). Dynamic behaviors are tested with elastomer test system for purpose of validating PHEM. With incorporation of inertia track and direct-decoupler, PHEM behaves effective and efficient vibration isolation in range of both low and high frequencies. The comparison of the numerical results with the experimental observations shows that the present PHEM achieves fairly good performance for the engine vibration isolation. 展开更多

Aircraft wake turbulence is an inherent outcome of aircraft flight, presenting a substan-tial challenge to air traffic control, aviation safety and operational efficiency.Building upon data obtained from coherent Doppler Lidar detection, and combining Dynamic Bayesian Networks(DBN)with Genetic Algorithm-optimized Backpropagation Neural Networks(GA-BPNN),this paper proposes a model for the inversion of wake vortex parameters.During the wake vortex flow field simulation analysis, the wind and turbulent environment were initially superimposed onto the simulated wake velocity field.Subsequently,Lidar-detected echoes of the velocity field are simulated to obtain a data set similar to the actual situation for model training. In the case study validation, real measured data underwent preprocessing and were then input into the established model. This allowed us to construct the wake vortex characteristic parameter inversion model. The final results demonstrated that our model achieved parameter inversion with only minor errors. In a practical example, our model in this paper significantly reduced the mean square error of the inverted velocity field when compared to the traditional algorithm. This study holds significant promise for real-time monitoring of wake vortices at airports, and is proved a crucial step in developing wake vortex interval standards. 展开更多

Gear fault diagnosis technologies have received rapid development and been effectively implemented in many engineering applications. However, the various working conditions would degrade the diagnostic performance and make gear fault diagnosis(GFD)more and more challenging. In this paper,a novel model parameter transfer(NMPT)is proposed to boost the performance of GFD under varying working conditions.Based on the previous transfer strategy that controls empirical risk of source domain, this method further integrates the superiorities of multi-task learning with the idea of transfer learning(TL)to acquire transferable knowledge by minimizing the discrepancies of separating hyperplanes between one specific working condition(target domain)and another(source domain),and then transferring both commonality and specialty parameters over tasks to make use of source domain samples to assist target GFD task when sufficient labeled samples from target domain are unavailable. For NMPT implementation, insufficient target domain features and abundant source domain features with supervised information are fed into NMPT model to train a robust classifier for target GFD task.Related experiments prove that NMPT is expected to be a valuable technology to boost practical GFD performance under various working conditions. The proposed methods provides a transfer learning-based framework to handle the problem of insufficient training samples in target task caused by variable operation conditions. 展开更多

It is common for wind turbines to be installed in remote locations on land or offshore, leading to difficulties in routine inspection and maintenance. Further, wind turbines in these locations are often subject to harsh operating conditions. These challenges mean there is a requirement for a high degree of maintenance. The data generated by monitoring systems can be used to obtain models of wind turbines operating under different conditions, and hence predict output signals based on known inputs. A model-based condition monitoring system can be implemented by comparing output data obtained from operational turbines with those predicted by the models, so as to detect changes that could be due to the presence of faults. This paper discusses several techniques for model-based condition monitoring systems: linear models, artificial neural networks, and state dependent parameter "pseudo" transfer functions. The models are identified using supervisory control and data acquisition(SCADA) data acquired from an operational wind firm. It is found that the multiple-input single-output state dependent parameter method outperforms both multivariate linear and artificial neural network-based approaches. Subsequently, state dependent parameter models are used to develop adaptive thresholds for critical output signals. In order to provide an early warning of a developing fault, it is necessary to interpret the amount by which the threshold is exceeded, together with the period of time over which this occurs. In this regard, a fuzzy logic-based inference system is proposed and demonstrated to be practically feasible. 展开更多

Multispecies ecological models have been used for predicting the effects of fishing activity and evaluating the performance of management strategies. Size-spectrum models are one type of physiologically-structured ecological model that provide a feasible approach to describing fish communities in terms of individual dietary variation and ontogenetic niche shift. Despite the potential of ecological models in improving our understanding of ecosystems, their application is usually limited for data-poor fisheries. As a first step in implementing ecosystem-based fisheries management(EBFM), this study built a size-spectrum model for the fish community in the Haizhou Bay, China. We describe data collection procedures and model parameterization to facilitate the implementation of such size-spectrum models for future studies of data-poor ecosystems. The effects of fishing on the ecosystem were exemplified with a range of fishing effort and were monitored with a set of ecological indicators. Total community biomass, biodiversity index, W-statistic, LFI(Large fish index), Mean W(mean body weight) and Slope(slope of community size spectra) showed a strong non-linear pattern in response to fishing pressure, and largest fishing effort did not generate the most drastic responses in certain scenarios. We emphasize the value and feasibility of developing size-spectrum models to capture ecological dynamics and suggest limitations as well as potential for model improvement. This study aims to promote a wide use of this type of model in support of EBFM. 展开更多

The thermal state of the early Earth’s interior and its way of cooling are crucial for its subsequent evo-lution.Earth is initially hot as it acquired enormous heat in response to violent processes during its formation,e.g.,the Moon-forming giant impact, the segregation and formation of its metallic core, the tidal interaction with the early Moon, and the decay of radioactive elements, etc. In the meantime, the cooling mechanisms of early Earth’s mantle remain elusive despite their importance, and the previously proposed cooling models of the mantle are controversial. In this paper,we first reviewed several prevalent parameter-ized thermal evolution models of the early mantle. The models give unrealistic predictions since they were estab-lished solely based on a single tectonic regime, such as the stagnant-lid regime,or relied on the disputable existence of the plate tectonics prior to-3.5 Ga.Then we argue that the mantle should have started to cool down from a very hot state after the solidification of the ferocious magma ocean.Instead of using one single scaling law to describe a single-stage model,we suggest that an episodic multi-stage cooling model(EMCM)of the early mantle could be more plausible to account for the mantle’s early cooling process. The model reconciles with the fact that the mantle cools down from a hot state prior to*3.5 Ga and can also explain the well-constrained post-3.5 Ga thermal history of the mantle. 展开更多

In order to develop a coupled basin scale model of ocean circulation and biogeochemical cycling,we present a biogeochemical model including 12 components to study the ecosystem in the China coastal seas(CCS).The formulation of phytoplankton mortality and zooplankton growth are modified according to biological characteristics of CCS.The four sensitivity biological parameters, zooplankton assimilation efficiency rate(ZooAE_N),zooplankton basal metabolism rate(ZooBM),maximum specific growth rate of zooplankton(μ_(20)) and maximum chlorophyll to carbon ratio(Chl2C_m) are obtained in sensitivity experiments for the phytoplankton, and experiments about the parameter μ_(20'),half-saturation for phytoplankton NO_3 uptake(K_(NO_3)) and remineralization rate of small detritusN(SDeRRN) are conducted. The results demonstrate that the biogeochemical model is quite sensitive to the zooplankton grazing parameter when it ranges from 0.1 to 1.2 d^(-1).The K_(NO_3) and SDeRRN also play an important role in determining the nitrogen cycle within certain ranges. The sensitive interval of KNO_3 is from 0.1 to 1.5(mmol/m^3)^(-1),and interval of SEdRRN is from 0.01 and 0.1 d^(-1).The observational data from September 1998 to July 2000 obtained at SEATS station are used to validate the performance of biological model after parameters optimization. The results show that the modified model has a good capacity to reveal the biological process features, and the sensitivity analysis can save computational resources greatly during the model simulation. 展开更多

The distinct element method(DEM) incorporated with a novel bond contact model was applied in this paper to shed light on the microscopic physical origin of macroscopic behaviors of weathered rock, and to achieve the changing laws of microscopic parameters from observed decaying properties of rocks during weathering. The changing laws of macroscopic mechanical properties of typical rocks were summarized based on the existing research achievements. Parametric simulations were then conducted to analyze the relationships between macroscopic and microscopic parameters, and to derive the changing laws of microscopic parameters for the DEM model. Equipped with the microscopic weathering laws, a series of DEM simulations of basic laboratory tests on weathered rock samples was performed in comparison with analytical solutions. The results reveal that the relationships between macroscopic and microscopic parameters of rocks against the weathering period can be successfully attained by parametric simulations. In addition, weathering has a significant impact on both stressestrain relationship and failure pattern of rocks. 展开更多
