Although some short-term follow-up studies have found that individuals recovering from coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)exhibit anxiety,depression,and altered brain microstructure,their long-term physical problems,neuropsychiatric sequelae,and changes in brain function remain unknown.This observational cohort study collected 1-year follow-up data from 22 patients who had been hospitalized with COVID-19(8 males and 11 females,aged 54.2±8.7 years).Fatigue and myalgia were persistent symptoms at the 1-year follow-up.The resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging revealed that compared with 29 healthy controls(7 males and 18 females,aged 50.5±11.6 years),COVID-19 survivors had greatly increased amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation(ALFF)values in the left precentral gyrus,middle frontal gyrus,inferior frontal gyrus of operculum,inferior frontal gyrus of triangle,insula,hippocampus,parahippocampal gyrus,fusiform gyrus,postcentral gyrus,inferior parietal angular gyrus,supramarginal gyrus,angular gyrus,thalamus,middle temporal gyrus,inferior temporal gyrus,caudate,and putamen.ALFF values in the left caudate of the COVID-19 survivors were positively correlated with their Athens Insomnia Scale scores,and those in the left precentral gyrus were positively correlated with neutrophil count during hospitalization.The long-term follow-up results suggest that the ALFF in brain regions related to mood and sleep regulation were altered in COVID-19 survivors.This can help us understand the neurobiological mechanisms of COVID-19-related neuropsychiatric sequelae.This study was approved by the Ethics Committee of the Second Xiangya Hospital of Central South University(approval No.2020 S004)on March 19,2020. 展开更多

We studied the influence of doctor-patient communication skills training on brain functional architecture using resting-state functional MRI(rs-fMRI) with a regional homogeneity(ReHo) method. Ten medical students participated in the study. A 1-year long doctor-patient communication skills training program was conducted. RsfMRI data were collected at baseline, one month and one year after training. There was a significant increase in the communication skills test average scores between baseline and 1-month duration of training(P〈0.001). After one month of communication skills training, medical students had decreased ReHo in the right superior temporal gyrus compared with the baseline. After one year of communication skills training, students had increased ReHo in multiple regions and decreased ReHo in several regions(P 〈0.05, Alphasim corrected). The change of ReHo values in the superior temporal gyrus negatively correlated with the change of communication skills scale score between one month after communication skills training and baseline(r=-0.734, P= 0.036). The training program we used can be an effective approach of improving doctor-patient communication skills, and the training resulted in functional plasticity of the brain’s architecture toward optimizing locally functional organization. 展开更多

AIM: To investigate the functional networks underlying the brain-activity changes of patients with high myopia using the voxel-wise degree centrality(DC) method.METHODS: In total, 38 patients with high myopia(HM)(17 males and 21 females), whose binocular refractive diopter were-6.00 to-7.00 D, and 38 healthy controls(17 males and 21 females), closely matched in age, sex, and education levels, participated in the study. Spontaneous brain activities were evaluated using the voxel-wise DC method. The receiver operating characteristic curve was measured to distinguish patients with HM from healthy controls. Correlation analysis was used to explore the relationship between the observed mean DC values of the different brain areas and the behavioral performance.RESULTS: Compared with healthy controls, HM patients had significantly decreased DC values in the right inferior frontal gyrus/insula, right middle frontal gyrus, and right supramarginal/inferior parietal lobule(P〈0.05). In contrast, HM patients had significantly increased DC values in the right cerebellum posterior lobe, left precentral gyrus/postcentral gyrus, and right middle cingulate gyrus(P〈0.05). However, no relationship was found between the observed mean DC values of the different brain areas and the behavioral performance(P〉0.05).CONCLUSION: HM is associated with abnormalities in many brain regions, which may indicate the neural mechanisms of HM. The altered DC values may be used as a useful biomarker for the brain activity changes in HM patients. 展开更多

Attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder(ADHD) is a disorder characterized by behavioral symptoms including hyperactivity/impulsivity among children,adolescents,and adults.These ADHD related symptoms are influenced by the complex interaction of brain networks which were under explored.We explored age-related brain network differences between ADHD patients and typically developing(TD) subjects using resting state f MRI(rs-f MRI) for three age groups of children,adolescents,and adults.We collected rs-f MRI data from 184 individuals(27 ADHD children and 31 TD children;32 ADHD adolescents and 32 TD adolescents;and 31 ADHD adults and 31 TD adults).The Brainnetome Atlas was used to define nodes in the network analysis.We compared three age groups of ADHD and TD subjects to identify the distinct regions that could explain age-related brain network differences based on degree centrality,a well-known measure of nodal centrality.The left middle temporal gyrus showed significant interaction effects between disease status(i.e.,ADHD or TD) and age(i.e.,child,adolescent,or adult)(P 0.001).Additional regions were identified at a relaxed threshold(P 0.05).Many of the identified regions(the left inferior frontal gyrus,the left middle temporal gyrus,and the left insular gyrus) were related to cognitive function.The results of our study suggest that aberrant development in cognitive brain regions might be associated with age-related brain network changes in ADHD patients.These findings contribute to better understand how brain function influences the symptoms of ADHD. 展开更多

This study aimed to investigate the energy supply of athletes,who had a mild form of coronavirus infection(COVID-19)under cycling ergometric load(CEL)to substantiate the timing of recovery,as well as to determine the volume and intensity of physical activity.Eighty-seven athletes aged from 18 to 28 years old,involved in cyclic sports,were examined.Group I consisted of 52 athletes with COVID-19,and group Ⅱ consisted of 37 healthy self-isolating athletes.In addition to the comprehensive examination,the tested athletes underwent special examinations:the study of diagnostic material using methods of nucleic acid amplification,spirography and spiroergometry,electrocardiography(ECG),and CEL.The results of athletes from both groups did not differ significantly(p>0.5)in the 1st,2nd,and 3rd examinations.The second examination revealed a discrepancy between functional reserves and the load performed,as evidenced by the difference in the recovery rate of most indicators,the results of the third examination in the long-term period(6 months)showed that the athletes of the first group did not have any violations of the parameters of the respiratory function(RF)and cardiovascular system at rest,after performing CEL,as well as in the recovery period.The results suggest that the full resumption of training loads and participation in competitions are possible only with the complete normalization of the functional state of the cardiorespiratory system.The most informative indicators are:minute ventilation(V E),heart rate(HR),oxygen pulse(OP),and coefficient of oxygen utilization(COU). 展开更多

Background: Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) is a novel method for studying the changes of brain networks due to acupuncture treatment. In recent years, more and more studies have focused on the brain functional connectivity network of acupuncture stimulation. Objective: To offer an overview of the different influences of acupuncture on the brain functional connec- tivity network from studies using resting-state fMRI. Search strategy: The authors performed a systematic search according to PRISMA guidelines, The database PubMed was searched from January 1, 2006 to December 31, 2016 with restriction to human studies in English language. Inclusion criteria: Electronic searches were conducted in PubMed using the keywords "acupuncture" and "neuroimaging" or "resting-state fMRI" or "functional connectivity", Data extraction and analysis: Selection of included articles, data extraction and methodological quality assessments were respectively conducted by two review authors. Results: Forty-four resting-state fMRI studies were included in this systematic review according to inclu- sion criteria. Thirteen studies applied manual acupuncture vs. sham, four studies applied electro- acupuncture vs. sham, two studies also compared transcutaneous electrical acupoint stimulation vs. sham, and nine applied sham acupoint as control. Nineteen studies with a total number of 574 healthy subjects selected to perform fMRI only considered healthy adult volunteers. The brain functional connec- tivity of the patients had varying degrees of change. Compared with sham acupuncture, verum acupunc- ture could increase default mode network and sensorimotor network connectivity with pain-, affective- and memory-related brain areas. It has significantly greater connectivity of genuine acupuncture between the periaqueductal gray, anterior cingulate cortex, left posterior cingulate cortex, right anterior insula, limbic/paralimbic and precuneus compared with sham acupuncture. Some research had also shown that acupuncture could adjust the limbic-paralimbic-neocortical network, brainstem, cerebellum, subcortical and hippocampus brain areas. Conclusion: It can be presumed that the functional connectivity network is closely related to the mech- anism of acupuncture, and central integration plays a critical role in the acupuncture mechanism. 展开更多

This study investigated the changes in interhemispheric functional connectivity (FC) of the whole brain in open globe injury (OGI) patients, using voxel-mirrored homotopic connectivity (VMHC), and their relationships with clinical features. Totally, 16 male and 2 female acute OGI patients and 18 sex, age, and education-matched healthy volunteers were enrolled in the study. All subjects were scanned through functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves analyses had been used to identify the VMHC in these brain areas could be used as biomarkers to distinguish OGI and from healthy control (HC). The mean VMHC values in multiple brain areas and clinical OGI manifestations were evaluated with a Pearson correlation analysis. OGI patients had significantly decreased VMHC in the bilateral calcarine/lingual/cuneus (BA18, 19, 30) and middle occipital gyrus (BA18, 19). The OGI patients had abnormal interhemispheric FC in the dorsal visual pathway, which may represent the pathophysiological mechanism that underlies acute vision loss after OGI. 展开更多

The pathogenesis of lAD, however, remains unclear. The purpose of this study applied regional homogeneity (ReHo) method to analyze encephalic functional characteristic of lAD college students under resting state. Methods Functional magnetic resonanc image (fMRI) was performed in 19 lAD college students and 19 controls under resting state. ReHo method was used to analyze the differences between the average ReHo in two groups. Results The following increased ReHo brain regions were found in lAD group compared with control group: cerebellum, brainstem, right cingulate gyrus, bilateral parahippocampus, right frontal lobe (rectal gyrus, inferior frontal gyrus and middle frontal gyrus), left superior frontal gyrus, left precuneus, right postcentral gyrus, right middle occipital gyrus, right inferior temporal gyrus, left superior temporal gyrus and middle temporal gyrus. The decreased ReHo brain regions were not found in the lAD group compared with the control group. Conclusions There are abnormalities in regional homogeneity in lAD college students compared with the controls and enhancement of synchronization in most encephalic regions can be found. The results reflect the functional change of brain in lAD college students. The connections between the enhancement of synchronization among cerebellum, brainstem, limbic lobe, frontal lobe and apical lobe may be relative to reward pathways. 展开更多

The present work was to explore the abnormal spontaneous activity shown with regional homogeneity (ReHo) in depression by resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI).Methods Using fMRI, the differences of regional brain activity were measured in resting state in depressed vs. healthy participants. Sixteen participants firstly diagnosed with major depressive disorder and 16 controls were scanned during resting state. A novel method based on ReHo was used to detect spontaneous hemodynamic responses across the whole brain.Results ReHo in the left thalamus, left temporal lobe, left cerebellar posterior lobe, and the bilateral occipital lobe was found to be significantly decreased in depression compared to healthy controls in resting state of depression.Conclusions Abnormal spontaneous activity exists in the left thalamus, left temporal lobe, left cerebellar posterior lobe,and the bilateral occipital lobe. And the ReHo may be a potential reference in understanding the distinct brain activity in resting state of depression. 展开更多

Background:Neuroimaging studies have found that functional changes exist in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD).However,the majority of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies in patients with PD are task-related and cross-sectional.This study investigated the functional changes observed in patients with PD,at both baseline and after 2 years,using resting-state fMRI.It further investigated the relationship between whole-brain spontaneous neural activity of patients with PD and their clinical characteristics.Methods:Seventeen patients with PD underwent an MRI procedure at both baseline and after 2 years using resting-state fMRI that was derived from the same 3T MRI.In addition,20 age-and sex-matched,healthy controls were examined using resting-state fMRI.The fractional amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (fALFF) approach was used to analyze the fMRI data.Nonlinear registration was used to model within-subject changes over the scanning interval,as well as changes between the patients with PD and the healthy controls.A correlative analysis between the fALFF values and clinical characteristics was performed in the regions showing fALFF differences.Results:Compared to the control subjects,the patients with PD showed increased fALFF values in the left inferior temporal gyrus,right inferior parietal lobule (IPL) and right middle frontal gyrus.Compared to the baseline in the 2 years follow-up,the patients with PD presented with increased fALFF values in the right middle temporal gyrus and right middle occipital gyrus while also having decreased fALFF values in the right cerebellum,right thalamus,right striatum,left superior parietal lobule,left IPL,left precentral gyrus,and left postcentral gyrus (P 〈 0.01,after correction with AlphaSim).In addition,the fALFF values in the right cerebellum were positively correlated with the Unified PD Rating Scale (UPDRS) motor scores (r =0.5 l,P 〈 0.05,uncorrected) and the change in the UPDRS motor score (r =0.61,P 〈 0.05,uncorrected).Conclusions:The baseline and longitudinal changes of the fALFF values in our study suggest that dysfunction in the brain may affect the regions related to cortico-striato-pallido-thalamic loops and cerebello-thalamo-cortical loops as the disease progresses and that alterations to the spontaneous neural activity of the cerebellum may also play an important role in the disease's progression in patients with PD. 展开更多

Background Functional neuroimaging study has opened an avenue for exploring the pathophysiology of cluster headache (CH).The aim of our study was to assess the changes in brain activity in CH patients by the regional homogeneity method using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging technique.Methods The functional magnetic resonance imaging scans were obtained for 12 male CH patients with spontaneous right-sided headache attacks during “in attack” and “out of attack” periods and 12 age- and sex-matched normal controls.The data were analyzed to detect the altered brain activity by the regional homogeneity method using statistical parametric mapping software.Results Altered regional homogeneity was detected in the anterior cingulate cortex,the posterior cingulate cortex,the prefrontal cortex,insular cortex,and other brain regions involved in pain processing and modulation among different groups.Conclusion It is referred that these brain regions with altered regional homogeneity might be related to the pain processing and modulation of CH. 展开更多

It was found that high-skilled gymnasts have heterogeneity ofsomatotypes determined according to the B. Heath-J. Carter scheme and heterogeneity of types of autonomousnervous regulation of heart rate variability, systolic, diastolic blood pressure and respiration, determined on thespiroarteriorhythmocardiograph device. Highly qualified gymnasts have vago- and normotonic types of regulationof heart rate variability;normal-sympathetic-and hypersympathicotonic types of regulation of the variability ofsystolic blood pressure and diastolic blood pressure, vagotonic type of regulation of the variability of the respiratoryrhythm. Statistically significant differences gymnasts, successful in the medal standings at the internationalcompetitions and gymnasts participating, but not in high prizes in competitions, consist in the ability to resistfatigue while performing strenuous mental work (differences were revealed in 10-letter “Mental performance” at aconstant speed (p > 0.0001), and 3-letter test (p > 0.001)), data stabilometric test “Target” indicator “Time stabilityon the left foot” (R > 0.039) with the advantage of a high performing gymnasts artists. Methods: according to the DDSM -IV schizophrenia diagnostic criteria, 94 patients with first schizophrenic auditory hallucinations and 94 healthy patients were selected as control. All subjects underwent clinical evaluation and resting-state functional magnetic resonance (FMRI) scans, and the differences between the two groups were analyzed and compared. Results: compared to control group, patients with first-episode schizophrenia auditory hallucination itself left superior temporal gyrus, the ipsilateral medial prefrontal function and connection of side guide vane fall further, at the same time, to the left side of the patients with first-episode schizophrenia hallucinations Heschl back with ipsilateral medial prefrontal function and connection of the contralateral temporal gyrus, showed a trend of decline, in addition, for the right of HG, it was also functionally connected to the left middle temporal gyrus and showed a declining trend. Conclusion: in the early stages of schizophrenia, there are serious abnormal connectivity between different brain regions, especially between the two sides of the brain, and there is also an abnormal pattern of "disconnection", which indicates that there are serious abnormalities in the integration function of the brain in the first episode of schizophrenia. 展开更多
