Disentangling the driving mechanisms of urban impervious surface(UIS)spatial changes is critical for developing effective urban growth planning. However, previous studies often overlooked the indirect effects of multiple factors especially inter-urban spatial interaction and policy factors on urban expansion in urban clusters. Here,we used structural equation modeling and geographically weighted regression to quantify the spatiotemporal patterns of direct and indirect effects of socioeconomic factors, geographical environment,inter-urban spatial interaction, and policy factors on urban expansion in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei(BTH)region from 1990 to 2020.The findings showed that urban population,inter-urban spatial interaction, tertiary industry, road density, and policies were the main drivers of UIS changes.Among them,inter-urban spatial interaction primarily had an indirect positive effect on urban spatial patterns by increasing urban population and optimizing industrial structures, with the strongest impact in southern BTH.Regional planning policies such as development zones promoted urban expansion by stimulating industrial development and attracting urban population, with their influence escalating from 0.41 in 1990 to 0.57 in 2010.These findings highlight the importance of strategically guiding inter-urban spatial interactions and optimizing industrial layouts to foster compact urban development and sustainable land use in the BTH region. 展开更多

Promoting urban-rural integration and facilitating the bidirectional flow of urban and rural elements are core spatial objectives in the new era of China. The urban-rural fringe represents the region with the most intense interaction between urban and rural areas, serving as a key zone for breaking down barriers and promoting urban-rural integration.Based on a systematic review of representative case studies and scholarly literature, this paper synthesizes the evolving research perspectives on the urban-rural fringe, with particular attention to how data-driven approaches that integrate official statistics, remote sensing imagery, points of interest, and mobile phone signaling data have advanced the characterization of fringe features, refined identification methods, and revealed emerging developmental trends through spatial clustering and machine learning classification. It proposes an integrated analytical framework encompassing administrative boundaries, economic metabolism, social activities, material infrastructure, and the ecological environment. The paper further examines the characteristics and emerging development trends of urban-rural fringe areas and advances a set of strategic directions to support urban-rural integration and more efficient resource allocation. These include expanding analytical dimensions, enhancing data integration, refining identification criteria, elucidating mechanisms of internal and external interactions, and strengthening interdisciplinary collaboration.Collectively, these efforts offer actionable insights for optimizing public service delivery, directing infrastructure investment in transportation and utilities, delineating ecological conservation boundaries, and implementing place-based socioeconomic revitalization strategies in the urban-rural fringe regions. 展开更多

Urban spatial morphology(USM)optimization is critical to balancing biodiversity conservation and sustainable urbanization. However, previous studies predominantly focused on the socio-economic efficiency and static ecological metrics and rarely addressed the dynamic USM optimization across spatial scales. Here,we developed a multi-level ecological network(MEN)framework to resolve the tension between urban expansion and ecological integrity.By integrating the cost-weighted distance analysis with a hierarchical network transmission mechanism,we established a cross-scale spatial optimization system, which coordinated the regional ecological corridors and local habitat patches.Comparative experiments with conventional single-scale approaches and scenario simulations using the PLUS model show that the MEN framework had superior performance in three dimensions:(1)spatial governance:the primary-level network(peri-urban natural reserves)effectively contained urban sprawl, and the secondary-level network(intra-urban green corridors)mitigated habitat fragmentation and improved the built-environment;(2)scenario robustness:the model maintained an optimal compactness-loose balance in multiple development pathways;(3)landscape metrics:patch fragmentation decreased by 18.25%,and the internal landscape richness improved by 10.66%compared to the scenario without USM optimization. The findings provide new insight to establish a hierarchical ecological optimization framework as a nature-based spatial protocol to reconcile metropolitan growth with landscape sustainability. 展开更多

Under the dual influences of traditional Life-Death views and four decades of urban expansion, urban cemeteries,as unique elements of urban form, have transformed, inevitably impacting land planning and functional layouts. These spaces have been inadequately ad-dressed,especially in stock-based renewal where land scarcity intensifies conflicts between burial needs and urban development. This study focuses on three in-situ retained urban cem-eteries in Nanjing, adopting a case study approach with urban morphology,multi-source quan-titative analysis(including three spatial vitality elements),and data visualization, supplemented by comparative verification.Key findings reveal that urban cemeteries exhibit strong internal stability but low vitality and high negative externality.Their morphology has remained almost unchanged, with surrounding areas showing significant housing price depre-ciation within a 1-km radius, adjacent communities’visual avoidance, and low daily pedestrian flow, peaking only during Qingming Festival. These results quantitatively verify that such cem-eteries act as“fixed patches”in the urban fabric, restricting land efficiency and urban integra-tion due to cultural and physical factors. This research uniquely contributes by interpreting cultural-spatial interplay, providing empirical insights into“Not-In-My-Backyard”facilities in China. It emphasizes the necessity of integrating cemeteries into urban planning and concludes with forecasts for their future, considering emerging urban renewal trends. 展开更多

Urban areas contribute the vast majority of greenhouse gas(GHG)emissions, and urban greenspaces, including urban parks, are being established to promote environmental health by mitigating GHG emissions. However, the diversity of CH4and N2O cycling genes and microbiomes in urban park ecosystems remains poorly understood. Here,we sampled five types of habitats in subtropical urban parks, including moss, sediment, soil, tree hole, and water,to explore the microbial communities and microbially mediated CH4and N2O cycling processes using metagenomic sequencing. We found strongly positive biodiversity-ecosystem-functioning(BEF)relationships in nitrogen cycling functions,as well as in CH4cycling,except in sediment, indicating the microbial community in the sediment had reached function saturation for CH4cycling.CH4cycling was driven by a few specific microbial genera, whereas many microorganisms participated in the denitrification process.Microbes in sediment exhibited the highest CH4and N2O metabolic potential among the five habitats, especially for methanogenesis and N2O production processes.Significant positive correlations were observed between the mcrA and N2O cycling genes, suggesting methanogenesis could be coupled with denitrification.Environmental factors, such as dissolved oxygen, total nitrogen, and total carbon greatly affected microbial community composition and functional gene families. These results highlight that pond sediments are an overlooked potential source of CH4and N2O emissions, which may undermine the role of urban greenspace in reducing GHG emissions.Reducing nitrogen pollution and eutrophication is recommended to mitigate CH4and N2O emissions from pond sediments in urban environments. 展开更多

Urban blue-green infrastructure(UBGI)is essential to addressing urbanization challenges. However, its potential to mitigate climate extremes remains unclear. This study assessed biodiversity and water conservation challenges in UBGI using testate amoebae(TA)as indicators of ecosystem health. The studied UBGI consists of 0.67 km2 of forested hills and 3668 m2 of ponds, located in the 55800-km2 city cluster in the Pearl River Delta,South China. The analysis incorporated a two-year(June 2021 and June 2022)dataset,comprising TA records from 27 soil samples,30 pond water samples, and 30 pond sediment samples;27 microspatial factors, including five factors representing weather conditions(WC),eight factors for air quality(AQ),and 14 factors for water quality(WQ);and four climate extreme scenarios(heatwaves, droughts, typhoons, and floods).Biodiversity and water quality concerns linked to interactions between urban emissions and aquatic ecosystems within UBGI were illuminated in the following three key findings:(1)biotope connectivity enabled redistributions of soil-specific TA(six out of 42 species)along hillslopes(moisture gradient)and pond lengths(hydrological gradient);(2)TA showed strong biotope adaptation, with stochastic processes explaining 69.3% of community variations in water and 78.8% in sediment;and(3)UBGI showed limited effectiveness in mitigating urban emissions, such as CO and NH3,particularly when TA were adversely impacted by WC driven by climate extremes and when WQ was adversely influenced by AQ.The findings suggest that TA are reliable bioindicators, informing UBGI performance and supporting climateresilient interventions to monitor cross-border pollution and its effects at the biotope level. 展开更多

Balancing urbanization with ecological carrying capacity is essential for sustainable urban development.Traditional land use prediction and urban growth boundary(UGB)delineation methods often overlook ecological assessments and fail to address policy conflicts. This study proposes an integrated model combining urban spatial suitability(USS)and ecological carrying capacity(ECC)evaluations with cellular automata(CA)model to improve simulation accuracy and support scenario-based UGB delineation.First,we identify spatial variations in urban development potential under different scenarios by adjusting the weights of USS and ECC.Then,a multi-objective planning model is used to optimize the future land-use structure, maximizing overall benefits. Finally, the development potential and optimized land allocation are incorporated into the CA model to simulate future land use and delineate UGB for each scenario. Results show that integrating USS and ECC evaluations improves simulation accuracy, with the Kappa coefficient increasing from 0.836(with only USS evaluation)to 0.908 and overall accuracy reaching 94.1%.While the economic development scenario yields the highest economic benefits,a stronger emphasis on ECC produces more compact and spatially organized urban forms, characterized by higher aggregation and lower fragmentation. This framework provides a robust basis for multi-scenario urban simulation and offers valuable guidance for the scientific UGB delineation. 展开更多

Ecological urban agglomeration in China face increasing pressure to reconcile rapid urban expansion with the maintenance of blue-green spaces(BGSs)that sustain urban cooling island(UCI)effects. While existing research has documented UCI dynamics in mature cities,an important unresolved issue remains in understanding how rapid urbanisation reshapes BGS patterns and weakens their cooling capacity in newly developing ecological urban agglomeration. Here, using multi-source remote sensing data,Markov land transition analysis and Weather Research and Forecasting simulations,we investigated the spatiotemporal dynamics of BGSs and their thermal effects in a representative ecological urban agglomeration in eastern China during 2000–2020.We found that historical landcover change in the study area was characterised not only by the expansion of development land from 7.18%in 2000 to 13.55%in 2020,but also by the transition and spatial reorganisation of BGSs,accompanied by declining BGS continuity and increasing ecological fragmentation.Thermal analyses further showed that water and wetlands consistently provided the strongest cooling effects, whereas developed land and bare land were associated with higher relative land surface temperature.Transitions to water and wetland generally produced stronger cooling effects than most other land-cover transitions;however, the cooling performance of newly converted ecological land remained weaker than that of long-established natural BGSs.In the representative city of Huai’an of Jiangsu Province, simulated temperature patterns also showed that connected blue-green structures were associated with relatively stronger local cooling during the analyzed high-temperature period.Together, these findings indicate that rapid urbanisation not only changes BGS patterns but is also associated with weakened cooling performance and greater thermal pressure across the regional landscape.Preserving existing highquality BGSs,especially water and wetlands, and improving the spatial configuration and connectivity of urban blue-green systems are therefore essential for climate-adaptive planning in rapidly developing ecological urban agglomeration. 展开更多

Owing to intensified globalization and informatization, the structures of the urban scale hierarchy and urban networks between cities have become increasingly intertwined, resulting in different spatial effects. Therefore, this paper analyzes the spatial interaction between urban scale hierarchy and urban networks in China from 2019 to 2023,drawing on Baidu migration data and employing a spatial simultaneous equation model. The results reveal a significant positive spatial correlation between cities with higher hierarchy and those with greater network centrality.Within a static framework,we identify a positive interaction between urban scale hierarchy and urban network centrality, while their spatial cross-effects manifest as negative neighborhood interactions based on geographical distance and positive cross-scale interactions shaped by network connections.Within a dynamic framework, changes in urban scale hierarchy and urban networks are mutually reinforcing, thereby widening disparities within the urban hierarchy.Furthermore,an increase in a city’s network centrality had a dampening effect on the population growth of neighboring cities and network-connected cities. This study enhances understanding of the spatial organisation of urban systems and offers insights for coordinated regional development. 展开更多

The urban heat island(UHI)effect increasingly threatens ecosystem function and human well-being in rapidly urbanizing regions. However, existing studies predominantly describe the static morphology and land-use correlates of heat island patches, lacking a network-based understanding of how critical heat flow pathways can be identified and strategically disrupted for thermal remediation. To address this shortcoming,by taking the central Guizhou urban agglomeration in Southwest China as the study area.We integrated morphological spatial pattern analysis(MSPA),circuit theory, and complex network theory to construct a thermal environment network, quantitatively evaluated source importance via node weight, betweenness, and PageRank, and applied three edge-deleting strategies—random deletion(RD),high-degree-first(HDF),and high-betweenness-first(HBF)—to sever critical thermal corridors. The remediation effect was verified through connectivity robustness and recovery robustness analysis. The results indicated the total area of heat island patches expanded from 7484.63 km2in 2010 to 11096.94 km2in 2022,with core-type patches becoming dominant. Both the number of sources and corridors in the thermal environment network and the complexity of the structure increased.Compared with the corridor remediation effect, the HDF strategy performed better in the robustness analysis, with the lowest original degree of connection robustness(decreasing from 0.82 to 0.73)and the fastest rate of decrease. Moreover, the node restore robustness reduction effect was the best, and the edge restore robustness reduction effect was comparable to that of the HBF strategy. The proposed framework provides concrete spatial guidance for mitigating heat island risks and promoting sustainable urban planning in karst urban agglomerations. 展开更多

People-oriented new-type urbanization emphasizes the synergistic improvement of level and quality. This study, based on a quantity-quality synergy perspective, constructs a unified theoretical framework integrating these two dimensions.Focusing on the Yangtze River Economic Belt(YREB)from 2000 to 2022,this study comprehensively examines its new-type urbanization using methods including the entropy method, kernel density estimation, and a synergy evolution model, with driving mechanisms revealed by a Geodetector. The results indicate that:(1)Both the urbanization level and quality in the YREB have continuously increased, with the level rising from 32.54 to 61.64 and the quality from 43.47 to 67.93.However,the urbanization level remains below the national average and exhibits significant regional disparities.(2)The spatial pattern reveals a hierarchical gradient characterized by“downstream leading, midstream in the middle, and upstream lowest”.While central cities demonstrate radiating effects, siphoning effects persist in major southwestern cities, and the northern downstream area lags behind.(3)The synergistic evolution of urbanization level and quality significantly improved, transitioning from a polarized state of“quality lag”and“level imbalance”towards coordinated development.(4)The urbanization development patterns have shifted from extensive to optimal and imbalanced types. The downstream region is dominated by the optimal type, while the midstream and upstream areas primarily exhibit the imbalanced pattern, highlighting a significant potential for level improvement.(5)New-type urbanization in the YREB is driven by the synergistic effects of natural endowment, government regulation, and market adjustment, forming a tripartite system where“Innovation+”plays a particularly crucial role. This research provides a scientific basis for promoting new-type urbanization construction and high-quality development. 展开更多

Shenzhen,a major city in southern China, has experienced rapid advancements in Unmanned Aerial Vehicle(UAV)technology, resulting in extensive logistics networks with thousands of daily flights. However, frequent disruptions due to its subtropical monsoon climate, including typhoons and gusty winds, present ongoing challenges.Despite the growing focus on operational costs and third-party risks, research on low-altitude urban wind fields remains scarce. This study addresses this gap by integrating wind field analysis into UAV path planning, introducing key innovations to the classical model.First,UAV wind resistance and turbulence constraints are analyzed, mapping high-wind-speed and turbulence-prone zones in the airspace.Second, wind dynamics are incorporated into path planning by considering airspeed and groundspeed variation, optimizing waypoint selection and flight speed adjustments to improve overall energy efficiency.Additionally,a wind-aware Theta*algorithm is proposed, leveraging wind vectors to expedite search process, while Computational Fluid Dynamics(CFD)techniques are employed to calculate wind fields.A case study of Shenzhen, examining wind patterns over the past decade, demonstrates a 6.23%improvement in groundspeed and a 7.69%reduction in energy consumption compared to wind-agnostic models. This framework advances UAV logistics by enhancing route safety and energy efficiency, contributing to more cost-effective operations. 展开更多

Since the beginning of the 21st century, the theory of planetary urbanization that Neil Brenner of Harvard University and Andy Merrifield have developed has provided a way to study global urbanization with different epistemologies. No longer does it need to be restricted by the old urban-rural divide,so now this theory believes that cities and villages are all connected areas experiencing social and spatial changes without any fixed borders. This idea is very applicable to our country now;there are fewer barriers between cities and the countryside, and capital is spreading outwards.Urban villages have been called the‘cancer’of urbanization for a long time.In terms of planetary urbanization, they may be regarded as a local path of urbanization initiated by the rural population. They have served to support the country’s rapid urbanization, maintain social order, promote opening-up and reform, and deepen China’s integration with the world.Based on the redevelopment of urban villages in Xihu District,Hangzhou, this paper will present Brenner’s system of three-dimensional analysis of space, daily life and territorial regulation.Organize the Spatial Differences of the three types of urban villages in Xihu District and study the internal logic of the three differentiated redevelopment paths:demolition and reconstruction in Fangjiafan and Hengqiao;comprehensive improvement combined with the introduction of a financial-services cluster in Baishaquan;and the ongoing 2025 redevelopment of Shuangpu.Based on the above results, although Western planetary urbanization aims to build a“city without an outside”by eliminating the division between cities and the countryside, the local restructuring of Chinese urban villages should be considered in light of Brenner’s system, and the three basic institutional factors in China-collective ownership of land,central-local decentralization, and the agency of rural residents-must be taken into account. Therefore, there will be a change from exclusionary redevelopment to the‘Inclusive Urban Village Redevelopment 4.0’proposed by Professor Ye Yumin.A people-oriented way of arranging physical Space should be taken to integrate the daily life of the people and carry out multi-scale innovations in territorial regulation based on relational and network thinking.Only then will the urban-village areas be transformed and regenerated into high-quality ones.Research has promoted the application of planetary urbanization theory in China and provided practical support for the planning of cities and towns and other links. 展开更多

Rapid urbanization has accelerated biodiversity loss and ecosystem instability, particularly in ecologically fragile cold-region cities. As a critical node along the East Asian–Australasian Flyway,Harbin provides essential habitats for migratory birds but faces increasing ecological fragmentation. To better understand how urban ecological networks(ENs)respond to disturbances in cold-region environments, this study proposes an integrated framework that explicitly incorporates resilience simulation into EN analysis.Understory insectivorous birds, characterized by high ecological sensitivity and recognized as“urban avoiders”,were selected as indicator species to identify key habitats and ecological corridors.ENs were constructed based on species habitat suitability and landscape connectivity analyses, while resilience was evaluated through disturbance-based simulations that examined network responses under targeted and random node removal scenarios. The results indicate that most of the 120 identified ecological sources are distributed along both banks of the Songhua River,Northeast China, and are connected by 280 ecological corridors, including 39 key corridors.A total of 12 key nodes and 25 barrier points were detected, primarily concentrated in the old urban areas in the southern part of the city.Resilience simulations show that targeted disturbances lead to a substantially faster decline in both structural and functional resilience compared with random disturbances. The key nodes located along the Songhua River corridor and in southern Harbin play a critical role in maintaining overall network stability.By linking species-based habitat modeling with disturbance-driven resilience assessment, this study advances the understanding of EN stability in cold-region urban ecosystems and provides practical guidance for biodiversity conservation and sustainable urban planning in cold-region and other ecologically vulnerable cities. 展开更多

The evolution of cities into digitally managed environments requires computational systems that can operate in real time while supporting predictive and adaptive infrastructure management.Earlier approaches have often advanced one dimension—such as Internet of Things(IoT)-based data acquisition,Artificial Intelligence(AI)-driven analytics,or digital twin visualization—without fully integrating these strands into a single operational loop.As a result, many existing solutions encounter bottlenecks in responsiveness, interoperability, and scalability, while also leaving concerns about data privacy unresolved. This research introduces a hybrid AI–IoT–Digital Twin framework that combines continuous sensing, distributed intelligence, and simulation-based decision support. The design incorporates multi-source sensor data, lightweight edge inference through Convolutional Neural Networks(CNN)and Long ShortTerm Memory(LSTM)models, and federated learning enhanced with secure aggregation and differential privacy to maintain confidentiality.A digital twin layer extends these capabilities by simulating city assets such as traffic flows and water networks, generating what-if scenarios, and issuing actionable control signals.Complementary modules, including model compression and synchronization protocols, are embedded to ensure reliability in bandwidth-constrained and heterogeneous urban environments. The framework is validated in two urban domains:traffic management, where it adapts signal cycles based on real-time congestion patterns, and pipeline monitoring, where it anticipates leaks through pressure and vibration data.Experimental results show a 28%reduction in response time,a 35%decrease in maintenance costs, and a marked reduction in false positives relative to conventional baselines. The architecture also demonstrates stability across 50+edge devices under federated training and resilience to uneven node participation. The proposed system provides a scalable and privacy-aware foundation for predictive urban infrastructure management.By closing the loop between sensing, learning, and control,it reduces operator dependence, enhances resource efficiency, and supports transparent governance models for emerging smart cities. 展开更多

Urban resilience is the ability of cities to maintain their core functions, recover quickly, and adapt to change in the face of external shocks such as natural disasters, economic crises and social change. With the acceleration of urbanization and the frequent occurrence of uncertain events, enhancing urban resilience has become an important issue in promoting sustainable urban development.Focusing on the three major urban agglomerations in China, this study utilizes the panel data of 49 cities from 2013–2022 to construct a multidimensional evaluation index system covering economic, social, ecological, and infrastructural resilience and comprehensively applies the entropy-weighted TOPSIS method, the coefficient of variation, and the interpretative structural model(ISM)to reveal their spatial and temporal evolutionary patterns as well as their intrinsic driving mechanisms. The results show that:1)in terms of the mean value of resilience of the three major urban agglomerations, resilience shows a trend of‘the Pearl River Delta(PRD)>Yangtze River Delta(YRD)>Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei(BTH)’.All of them have experienced a decline from 2013 to 2017,a brief rebound from 2017 to 2019,and significant fluctuations during 2019–2022 due to the impact of major public health emergencies.Specifically, the overall resilience of the PRD is relatively high, the YRD demonstrates strong anti-disturbance capabilities, while the recovery process of the BTH lags behind relatively in terms of economic and social resilience. It is worth noting that the ecological resilience performs relatively stable among various urban agglomerations, which reflects the effectiveness of ecological governance since 2012;2)the spatial heterogeneity within urban agglomerations is remarkable, with prominent differences in the‘core-periphery’gradient in BTH,a multi-center synergistic resilience network in YRD,and PRD characterized by the‘dual-core leadership’,and unexpected events reflect that the difference in regional risk resistance within the PRD is greater than that in the YRD;3)ISM analysis shows that the common point of the resilience driving mechanism of the three major urban agglomerations is that economic resilience occupies a central position in the resilience system of the urban agglomerations, but there are also stratified differences:BTH relies on people’s wellbeing to drive the resilience system, the YRD focuses on the synergy between the economy and services, and the PRD shows a dual-layered structure pattern driven by the integration of‘foundation and industry’.This study provides a comparative empirical framework for understanding the dynamic evolution of urban resilience in China’s major urban agglomerations and offers targeted policy insights for formulating regionally differentiated resilience planning and risk management strategies. 展开更多

In the process of global urbanization, the real estate industry has experienced a series of fluctuations that have affected its sustainable and healthy development, mostly owing to the reduced housing affordability for residents caused by non-synergy of populationland-industry urbanization(PLIU).However, relatively few studies have examined the impact of urbanization on urban residents’housing affordability from a PLIU synergy perspective. This paper analyzes spatial pattern evolution of urban residents’housing affordability from 2005 to 2020 by constructing an evaluation model for measuring urban residents’housing affordability.Through the innovative‘cube’method for measuring PLIU synergy, based on Spatial Durbin Model(SDM)and Geographically and Temporally Weighted Regression(GTWR),we analyze the impact of urbanization on urban residents’housing affordability. The main conclusions are presented as follows:first, the overall urban residents’housing affordability in China(excluding Hong Kong,Macao, and Taiwan)has shown an upward trend, with spatial‘zonal differences’and‘hierarchical differences’.Second, the urbanization process has a significant negative effect on urban residents’housing affordability, and the PLIU construct is not synergistic, with population and industry urbanization lagging behind land urbanization.Third, spatial heterogeneity is evident in the impact of urbanization on housing affordability, especially in urban agglomerations. The core of the evolution of urban residents’housing affordability lies in the matching of population, land, and industrial urbanization, and the synergy of the three developments. In the Yangtze River Delta urban agglomeration and Urban Agglomeration of the Middle Reaches of the Yangtze River(MRYR),the advancement of urbanization has a positive effect on urban residents’housing affordability, and PLIU is synergistic, while in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei(BTH)urban agglomeration,Pearl River Delta(PRD)urban agglomeration, and Chengdu-Chongqing(CC)urban agglomeration, the effect is negative and PLIU is not synergistic, and with the former two, population urbanization is ahead of the others, whereas land urbanization is ahead of the others in the latter. This paper provides a reasonable explanation for the aforementioned results, revealing the mechanisms of how urbanization affects housing affordability, and can serve as a valuable reference for global research on housing affordability, holding significant importance. 展开更多
