Long-term water flooding(LTWF)is an efficient way to improve oil recovery(EOR)in carbonate reservoirs in the Middle East.Due to the complex depositional environment and intricate pore-throat structures of carbonate reservoirs, the development characteristics differ significantly from those of conventional sandstone reservoirs. While the mechanisms of LTWF in carbonate reservoirs are well-documented,there remains a significant gap in understanding the microscopic pore-scale displacement characteristics and the dynamic evolution of residual oil.To address this, nuclear magnetic resonance(NMR)and computed tomography(CT)scanning techniques were employed to investigate the behavior of LTWF across various carbonate rock samples.Initially,NMR technology was utilized to elucidate the pore-throat displacement characteristics at the microscopic level for different core samples under LTWF.Subsequently,CT scanning was applied to explore the dynamic evolution of microscopic residual oil and to categorize the types of residual oil based on their formation mechanisms. We found that LTWF predominantly utilizes oil within microscale pores of 1–10μm and>10μm.As the volumes of injected water increase, there is a noticeable improvement in oil displacement within submicron pores(0.1–1μm).However,residual oil primarily accumulates in nanopores(<0.1μm)and submicron pores. The study identified five distinct types of microscopic residual oil:clustered, throat, droplet, corner adsorbed, and pore lining.Notably, the transformation of residual oil in dolomite cores generally shifts from clustered to throat forms, while in limestone cores,it transitions from clustered to predominantly corner adsorbed and pore lining configurations. This nuanced understanding of oil utilization and residual categories under LTWF offers valuable insights into optimizing EOR strategies in complex carbonate reservoirs. 展开更多

The depositional architecture of submarine fans in rift basins is significantly controlled by complex geomorphology created by widespread normal faults, presenting a key challenge in deep-water sedimentology.Although extensive previous studies have established depositional architectures and sand body distribution patterns of transverse submarine fans controlled by graben boundary faults and interbasin transfer zones, research on how axial submarine fan architecture responds to intra-graben slope gradients and evolving transverse confinement remains inadequate. This study takes the Upper Jurassic B4 oil group in the North Sea X Oilfield as an example.By using 3D seismic data, cores and logging data to restore paleo-geomorphology and dissect depositional architecture, and further reveal the controls of intra-graben paleo-geomorphic variations on axial submarine fan depositional architecture. Our analysis shows that the paleogeomorphology in the study area features axial stepped slope breaks and phased evolution in transverse confinement. As the axial slope transitions from extremely steep slope segments to steep slope segments, slope transition zones and gentle slope segments, turbidity currents evolve from supercritical to subcritical states through hydraulic jumps, while generating divergent flows. This progression drives architectural transformation from sediment bypass, incised channel–overbank systems, distributary channels and channelized lobes to lobes.Concurrently, phased transverse confinement evolution controls vertical stacking characteristics of individual channel–lobes:early asymmetric stages produce lateral migration stacking;middle symmetric stages develop unordered compensational stacking;and late locally confined stages form deflected retrogradational stacking. We propose a dynamic submarine fan depositional architecture response model, which emphasizes how evolving paleo-geomorphology directly controls spatiotemporal configurations of architectural elements by altering gravity flow pathways and energy distribution, and is further modified by feedbacks where the deposits themselves become influencing topographic elements. It provides a new perspective for deep-water depositional models and reservoir prediction in areas with similar geomorphic settings. 展开更多

Compared to discrete continental marginal basins, the mechanisms of hydrocarbon migration and enrichment in transform continental marginal basins are poorly understood. In this study,we conducted a comprehensive analysis of the main source rocks, reservoirs, and vertical migration pathways within the Rovuma(RB)and Tanzania(TB)basins in East Africa utilizing drilling, logging, seismic, and geochemical data. The results indicate that the enhanced preservation conditions of the Lower Jurassic source rocks in the southwest could lead to the discovery of large natural gas fields in the southern TB and RB.The primary reservoir is a deep-water turbidite sandstone.Due to topographic differences, the expanse of the turbidite sandstones in the RB is significantly larger than those in Tanzania. The main vertical migration pathways are the western boundary fault zone of the Kerimbas Graben(WBFZ)and the Seagap fault zone(SFZ).In the RB,natural gas migrates vertically along the WBFZ and preferentially accumulates in the deep-water turbidite sandstones of the footwall under the control of the fluid potential.Conversely,in the southern TB,the deep natural gas first migrates upward along the SFZ,then moves along the shallow branch faults in the sandstones on both sides of the SFZ. 展开更多

The study of sequence stratigraphy often focuses on shallow marine and shelf-edge regions, while research on deep-sea stratigraphic sequences remains relatively weak. This study, based on highresolution 3D seismic data and drilling information, utilized sequence stratigraphy and seismic sedimentology as guidelines, and employed seismic interpretation methods to performed a division of deepsea stratigraphic sequences within the Romney 3D seismic survey area in the deep-water Taranaki Basin,New Zealand.Furthermore,it analyzed the characteristics of typical depositional systems and their associated controlling factors. The findings are as follows:(1)Based on seismic reflection termination relationships and seismic facies characteristics, four second-order sequence boundaries and nine thirdorder sequence boundaries were identified, resulting in the delineation of three second-order sequences and twelve third-order sequences in the basin.(2)Five seismic facies were recognized, corresponding to five typical sedimentary bodies:mass transport deposits(MTDs),deep-water channel, levee deposits, deltaic deposits, and pelagic deposits. However, due to the relatively thin sedimentary thickness of carbonate sediments, the seismic facies characteristics of carbonate sediments cannot be discerned in seismic data, but can be identified based on well data.Deltaic sediments mainly developed during the rift stage of the basin, while carbonate sediments formed during the transition from a passive to an active margin.Deep-water channel and levee deposits and MTDs emerged during the active margin stage, while pelagic deposits are ubiquitous in marine environments.(3)The uplift of New Zealand's interior and climate-driven erosion caused the resurgence of clastic sediments, which began to be transported to the deep sea,the seafloor topography would directly affect the movement path of sediment gravity flow, and sediment supply can affect the development and evolution of sedimentary systems.(4)Event deposits boundaries, such as erosional scour surfaces formed by channels and unconformities created by MTDs,can serve as boundaries for the division of deep-water stratigraphic sequences. This study proposes a method for delineating deep-water stratigraphic sequences using event deposits, particularly suitable under conditions where the influence of relative sea-level changes on deep-water deposits is relatively weak. This research not only enhances the understanding of deep-water depositional sequences but also provides a reference for studies on the evolution of deep-water deposition and its controlling factors in research areas with similar geological backgrounds worldwide. 展开更多

Natural gas hydrate(NGH),considered as a type of premium energy alternative to conventional hydrocarbons, has been broadly studied. The estimate of the total NGH resources in the world has decreased by more than 90%since the first evaluation in 1973.Geographic and geophysical conditions of the South China Sea(SCS)are favorable for the formation of NGH,which has been proved by drilling results up to date. The recoverability of the NGH in the SCS has been confirmed by the production tests using both vertical and horizontal wells.Since 2001,35 estimates of NGH resources in the SCS have been made, with relatively stable results varying between 600 and 900×109 ton oil equivalent. In these estimations, the volumetric method was commonly adopted, but the geological conditions, the migration-accumulation mechanisms of NGH,and the practical recoverability were not considered. These estimates cannot be regarded as evaluated resources according to the international resource evaluation standards, but are at most about prospective gas content of NGH,thus inefficient for guiding explorations and developments. To solve these problems, this study divides the past NGH surveys in the SCS into seven stages, acquires key geological parameters of every stage based on previous studies and analogy with other areas, evaluates the NGH resources of these seven stages by using the volumetric method, then adopts a new trend-analysis method to simulate the downward trend of these estimates, and finally predicts the NGH resources in the SCS at 2025 and 2030.The downward trend is because of the continuous improvement of NGH understanding over time, which is consistent with the trend of global NGH estimates. At the present stage(from 2019 to 2021),the average technically recoverable resource(ATRR)is 7.0×1012m3,and the estimates of 2025 and 2030 ATRR are 6.46×1012m3 and 4.01×1012m3respectively,with a difference of less than 40%.Therefore,it can be inferred that the ATRR of NGH in the SCS is between 4.0 and 6.5×1012m3,with an average of 5.25×1012m3. 展开更多

Paleo-oil reservoir is of great importance to understand hydrocarbon enrichment mechanism and hydrocarbon exploration potential, but is yet poorly investigated in Kuqa Depression. The occurrence of the paleo-oil reservoir in Dabei area was proved by quantitative grain fluorescence(QGF)and fluid inclusion petrography.Development history of the paleo-oil reservoir was reconstructed through:(1)oil-source correlation;(2)time coupling of source rock maturation, porosity evolution and migration pathways. The impact of paleo-oil reservoir on tight-gas accumulation was consequently discussed. Results suggest that considerable oil was accumulated in the K1bs reservoir with paleo oil-water contact in Dabei 2 Well and Dabei 201 Well at 5800 and 6040 m,respectively.Crude oil was primarily sourced from Triassic source rocks with Jurassic source rocks of secondary importance, which was at oil generation window(0.7%–1.1%Ro)during 9–6 and 7.5–5 Ma,respectively. The occurrence of K1bs tight reservoir(porosity<12%)was about 25 Ma,while faults and associated fractures at Kelasue structural belt were developed approximately from 8 to 3.5 Ma.Therefore, the tight oil accumulation was formed during 8–5 Ma.The paleo-oil reservoir in Dabei 1 gas field was destroyed by the evaporation fractionation in later stage. 展开更多

The Asmari Formation in the G oilfield on the Iran-Iraq border is a fractured-porous multi-lithology mixed reservoir, for which fracture is an important factor affecting oil productivity and water cut. The characterization and modeling of fractures in the carbonate reservoir of G oilfield are challenging due to weak conventional well log responses of fractures and a lack of specific logs, such as image logs. This study proposes an integrated approach for characterizing and modeling fractures in the carbonate reservoir. The features, formation mechanism, influencing factors, and prediction methods of fractures in the Asmari Formation carbonate reservoirs of G oilfield were studied using core observation, thin section, image log, cross-dipole acoustic log (CDAL), geomechanics numerical simulation (GNS), and production data. According to CDAL-based fracture density interpretation, GNS-based fracture intensity prediction between wells, and DFN-based rock fracture properties modeling, the quantitative fracture characterization for G oilfield was realized. This research shows that the fractures in the Asamri Formation are mainly medium-to high-angle shear fractures. The substantial compression stress during the Miocene played a major role in the formation of the prominent fractures and determined their trend in the region, with primary trends of NNW-SSE and NNE-SSW. The fracture distribution has regularity, and the fractures in zone A dolomites are more highly developed than that in zone B limestones vertically. Horizontally, fractures intensity is mainly controlled by faults and structural location. The results of this study may benefit the optimization of well design during field development. From 2019 to 2021, three horizontal wells pilot tests were deployed in the fractures belt in zone A, and these fractures prominently increased the permeability of tight dolomite reservoirs. The initial production of the wells is four to five times the average production of other wells in the area, showing a good development effect. Meanwhile, the updated numerical simulation validates that the history match accuracy of water cut based on the dual-porosity model is significantly improved, proving the fracture evaluation and prediction results to be relatively reliable and applicable. 展开更多

The morphological changes of deep-water channels have an important influence on the distributions of channel sand reservoirs,so it is important to explore the morphological change process of deep-water channel for the exploration and development of deep-water oil and gas.Based on a typical sinuous Quaternary channel(Channel I)in the Taranaki Basin,New Zealand,a variety of seismic interpretation techniques were applied to quantitatively characterize the morphological characteristics of the Channel I,and the relationships between the quantitative parameters and the morphological changes of the Channel I,as well as the controlling factors affecting those morphological changes, were discussed. The results are as follows:(1)in the quantitative analysis, six parameters were selected:the channel depth, width, sinuosity, and aspect ratio(width/depth),the channel swing amplitude(λ)and the channel bend frequency(ω);(2)according to the quantitative morphological parameters of the channel(mainly including three parameters such as channel sinuosity,ωandλ),the Channel I was divided into three types:the low-sinuous channel(LSC),the high-sinuous channel(HSC),the moderate-sinuous channel(MSC).U-shaped channel cross-sections developed in the LSC,V-shaped channel cross-sections developed in the HSC,including inclined-V and symmetric-V cross-sections,and dish-shaped channel cross-sections developed in the MSC;(3)the morphological characteristics of the LSC and MSC were related to their widths and depths, while the morphology of the HSC was greatly affected by the channel width,a change in depth did not affect the HSC morphology;(4)the morphological changes of the Channel I were controlled mainly by the slope gradient, the restricted capacity of the channel and the differential in fluid properties. 展开更多

The increase of total organic carbon content of the late Oligocene-early Miocene terrigenously-dominated marine shales in the shallower depth intervals was reported in the Ying-Qiong Basin,South China Sea.The organic enriched lower Sanya Formation shales(early Miocene)have biomarker characteristics of tropical/subtropical plants, with abundant high molecular weight n-alkanes,angiosperm-derived oleanane, rearranged oleananesⅠ,Ⅱ,Ⅱ,tricyclicetracyclic terpanes including des-A-oleanane,X,*,Y,Z,Z1 and bicadinanes W,T,T1,R.The biomarker characteristics are suggestive of larger influx of the dominant tropical/subtropical angiosperms in flora under a warming and more humid climate during depositions of the lower Sanya Formation(early Miocene)than the older Lingshui Formation(late Oligocene). The tropical/subtropical angiosperm input was thought as the prime control of terrigenous organic matter enrichment relative to the redox condition, and the coeval sea level changes and seafloor spreading in the South China Sea.Enrichment of the terrigenous organic matter in the early Miocene shales is likely in association with the coeval peak East Asian summer monsoon intensity in the South China Sea. 展开更多

The northward subduction of the Neo-Tethys oceanic crust triggered multiple magmatic activities in the West Myanmar Arc,which in turn influenced the deposition of sedimentary pyroclastic rocks from the Cretaceous to Eocene strata in the Central Myanmar Basin(CMB).The pore structure of these lithologic reservoirs is complex and rich in tuffaceous sandstone, which plays an adverse role in reservoir development in this region. To understand the development characteristics and genetic mechanism of the pyroclastic rocks within three sets of reservoirs in this area,a comprehensive analysis was conducted through borehole core observations, thin section identification, scanning electron microscope analysis, and mercury injection tests. The tuffaceous sandstone from the upper Cretaceous to the Eocene is dominated by intermediate-acid volcanic rock debris. The pyroclastic rocks exhibit evident chloritization and ironization, with residual intergranular pores being the principal type accompanied by a smaller amount of intergranular dissolved pores and intragranular dissolved pores. The highest porosity is observed in the Eocene tuffaceous sandstone, ranging from 8%to 12%.The Late Cretaceous to Paleocene sandstones exhibit lower porosity levels of only 4%-6%.These reservoirs are characterized by their low porosity and low-permeability.Despite the presence of a good source rock in this area, the volcanic debris particles filling the pores,as well as their subsequent devitrification, chloritization, and limonite mineralization, result in pore throat blockage and narrowing. The reservoirs in this area are small in size, exhibit poor reservoir connectivity and lateral continuity, and fail to meet the necessary conditions for commercial-scale hydrocarbon accumulation and migration. 展开更多

Situated between the petroliferous Cenozoic Zhujiang(Pearl)River Mouth Basin and the mud volcano-rich Mesozoic Dongsha Basin in the middle sector of the northern South China Sea,the Weitan Banks area has been previously mapped as a basement high that is composed of Mesozoic magmatic rocks. In this study,we present several favorable indicators for petroleum geology that were detected from geophysical profiling and benthic sampling in the area.A conspicuous hill was discovered, named“Zhongwei Hill”,~80 m high above the~340 m deep seafloor and~1 km broad,in a depression with more than 7 km thick sedimentary strata. The Zhongwei Hill was seismically imaged with a mushroom-shaped structure and containing a cake-like crown, fluid flow pipes, and an~10 km broad anticline at depth. Thus, the hill represents a source-plumbing-eruption system.Shallow gas zones linked to deep fracture were found at or near the hill.Stratigraphic correlation indicates that the deep strata comprise the Jurassic and Paleogene strata, the major hosts of hydrocarbon source rocks. In addition to the hill, there are number of mounds from which three bottom water samples were collected and the samples are rich in dissolved methane with concentrations high up to~900 nmol/L,much higher than the background level(0.5–2 nmol/L).The benthic samples are rich in coarse sediment clastics, authigenic carbonate nodules, and deep-water habitats likely feeding on methanotrophic community.Given these observations and the context,we propose that the Zhongwei Hill represents a mud volcano, likely thermally driven, that seeps methane from Jurassic and Paleogene source layers, thus poses a favorable clue for significant hydrocarbon generation capacity in transitional zone of the Zhujiang River Mouth Basin and the Dongsha Basin. 展开更多

The gas sources in the eastern Cote d’Ivoire Basin(Tano Basin)are seldom reported and remain controversial due to multiple sets of potential source rocks and poorly documented geochemical characteristics of natural gases. The marine source rock potential from the Upper Albian to Turonian as well as the molecular composition and the stable carbon isotope composition of natural gases in the eastern Cote d’Ivoire Basin were studied in detail to investigate the origins of natural gases. The total organic carbon(TOC),hydrogen index(HI),and generation potential(S1+S2)of source rocks indicate that both sapropelic source rocks and humic source rocks developed during the late Albian, whereas sapropelic source rocks developed during the Cenomanian and the Turonian. The normal order ofδ13CH413C2H6<δ13C3H813C113C213C3),the relationship between C2/C3molar ratio andδ13C213C3,and the plot ofδ13C1versus C1/(C2+C3)collectively show that the natural gases are thermogenic due to the primary cracking of kerogen, including the typical oil-associated gases from Well D-1,the mixed oil-associated gases and coal-derived gases from Well G-1 and Well L-1.Based on the plot ofδ13C1versusδ13C2and the established relationship betweenδ13C1and equivalent vitrinite reflectance(Ro),we proposed that the natural gases are in a mature stage(Ro generally varies from 1.0%to 1.3%).Combined with results of basin modelling and oil-to-source correlation, the transitional to marine source rocks during the late Albian were thought to have made a great contribution to the natural gases. Our study will make a better understanding on petroleum system in the eastern Cote d’Ivoire Basin. 展开更多

Deep-water channel systems are important petroleum reservoirs, and many have been discovered worldwide.Understanding deep-water channel sedimentary elements and evolution is helpful for deep-sea petroleum exploration and development.Based on high-resolution 3D seismic data, the Miocene channel system in the deep-water Taranaki Basin,New Zealand, was analyzed by using seismic interpretation techniques such as interlayer attribute extraction and strata slicing. The channel system was divided into five composite channels(CC-I to CC-V)according to four secondary level channel boundaries, and sedimentary elements such as channels, slump deposits, inner levees, mass transport deposits, and hemipelagic drape deposits were identified in the channel system. The morphological characteristics of several composite channels exhibited stark variances, and the overall morphology of the composite channels changed from relatively straight to highly sinuous to relatively straight. The evolution of the composite channels involved a gradual and repeated process of erosion and filling, and the composite channels could be divided into three evolutionary stages:initial erosion-filling,later erosion-filling(multistage),and channel abandonment. The middle Miocene channel system may have formed as a consequence of combined regional tectonic activity and global climatic change, and its intricate morphological alterations may have been influenced by the channel's ability to self-regulate and gravity flow properties. When studying the sedimentary evolution of a large-scale deep-water channel system in the Taranaki Basin during the Oligocene-Miocene,which transitioned from a passive margin to plate convergence,it can be understood how tectonic activity affected the channel and can also provide a theoretical reference for the evolution of the deepwater channels in areas with similar tectonic conversion environments around the world. 展开更多

This paper proposes a methodology for an alternative history matching process enhanced by the incorporation of a simplified binary interpretation of reservoir saturation logs(RST) as objective function. Incorporating fluids saturation logs during the history matching phase unlocks the possibility to adjust or select models that better represent the near wellbore waterfront movement, which is particularly important for uncertainty mitigation during future well interference assessments in water driven reservoirs. For the purposes of this study, a semi-synthetic open-source reservoir model was used as base case to evaluate the proposed methodology. The reservoir model represents a water driven, highly heterogenous sandstone reservoir from Namorado field in Brazil. To effectively compare the proposed methodology against the conventional methods, a commercial reservoir simulator was used in combination with a state-of-the-art benchmarking workflow based on the Big LoopTMapproach. A well-known group of binary metrics were evaluated to be used as the objective function, and the Matthew correlation coefficient(MCC) has been proved to offer the best results when using binary data from water saturation logs. History matching results obtained with the proposed methodology allowed the selection of a more reliable group of reservoir models, especially for cases with high heterogeneity. The methodology also offers additional information and understanding of sweep behaviour behind the well casing at specific production zones, thus revealing full model potential to define new wells and reservoir development opportunities. 展开更多

The use of time-lapse seismic method can identify the waterflood front under water injection development, but conventional methods lack analysis of the lateral coupling changes of water saturation and pore pressure in terms of reservoir changes, as well as that of the impact of simultaneous changes in multiple factors such as water saturation, pore pressure, and effective pressure on rock elastic parameters in terms of rock physics. There is also a lack of forward simulation research under different development conditions. In response to the above issues, the article first uses the Buckley-Leverett equation to establish the characteristics of the waterflood front and their lateral coupling changes when the water saturation and pore pressure of the reservoir change under water injection development. Then, in terms of rock physics, the Hertz-Mindlin contact model, Batzle-Wang fluid model, and Gassmann fluid replacement theory were used to establish a rock physics model for time-lapse seismic events, clarifying the characteristics of elastic parameters caused by changes in water saturation and pore pressure at the waterflood front and lateral variations under water flooding conditions. Finally, in terms of forward modeling analysis, five scenarios were designed: original state, natural energy development, water injection development, over-pressure situation, and strong over-pressure situation. The time-lapse seismic response characteristics and lateral variation characteristics of the five scenarios at the waterflood front were clarified, and the quantitative standard for identifying the waterflood front using the time-lapse seismic amplitude change rate under water injection development was further determined. Practical oilfield applications have shown that the use of the time-lapse seismic method can effectively identify the impact range of water flooding. By comparing time-lapse seismic data from different periods, the water flooding path and history can be determined. Therefore, the time-lapse seismic method can effectively guide the fine development of deepwater reservoirs through water injection. 展开更多

Distribution of Paleogene lacustrine high-quality source rocks in the Bozhong sag in Bohai Bay Basin is analyzed through data of geochemistry, geology and well logging, and its differences under the control of climate and tectonics is also well discussed.Distribution characteristics of the high-quality source rocks developed in the saline environment controlled by the climate are quite different from that developed in the rapid subsidence environment controlled by tectonics. The high-quality source rocks in Member 1 of Shahejie Formation developed in the saline environment account for 81.9%of total subsag area, and are distributed widely and extensively. The high-quality source rocks in Member 3 of Shahejie Formation and Member 3 of Dongying Formation is developed in the tectonic subsidence environment, and horizontally, the subsag subsidence rates has a positive correlation with the area proportion of the high-quality source rocks in the sag;vertically, the reduction-oxidation interface of the lake controls the enrichment of highquality source rocks.Controlled by the saline environment and rapid subsidence environment, the highquality source rocks in the Bozhong sag and adjacent areas have three types of development condition:the saline water, the tectonic subsidence, and joint control of the saline water and the tectonic subsidence. The humid climate and low subsidence rate are not favorable for development of high-quality source rocks. 展开更多

The Middle Cretaceous Mishrif Formation of the Cenomanian-Turonian age is an important Middle Eastern reservoir.Previous studies have shown that carbonates in the Mishrif Formation are affected by karstification and are concentrated at the top of the formation. However, there is a lack of systematic research on the effects of karstification on the formation’s reservoir characteristics.Based on core samples, scanning electron microscopy of thin sections, and geochemical analysis of C,O,and Sr isotopes from wells in the Missan Oil Fields, unconformity was identified at the top of the B21 subzone of the Mishrif Formation.Core and cast-thin-section observations indicate that there is a significant lithological difference above and below the unconformity, and dissolution pores and voids are well-developed beneath it.Vadose silt fills the intragranular pores and geopetal fabric is developed inside some mouldic pores beneath the unconformity surface. The isotopic values of 87Sr/86Sr(0.707270-0.707722)and δ18O(−5.94‰—−2.32‰)suggest that the top of the B21 subzone of the Mishrif Formation has been severely affected by syngenetic karst.Karstification is the key to high-quality reservoir formation and the reservoir’s oil-bearing heterogeneity. This study will inform oil and gas exploration in the Missan Oil Fields and in other areas with similar reservoir characteristics. 展开更多
